General showers, mostly lig'ut to moderate but heavy at a few sta tions have fallen in the Carolinas. northern Georgia and Alabama; scat tered showers in Tennessee, Oklahoma, southern Louisiana and on the Texas coast and a few places elsewhere JAMES H. Cochise County Texas Canyon road passable; all main roads in good condition. Coconino County Roads generally good. Showers causing some mud over short stretches, but not delaying travel. Graham County County roads in fair condition; rough from Geronimo to San Carlos. Greenlee County All roads in county in first class condition; all streams bridged. All roads have gravel surface well packed. Gila County General condition: Roads are dry and dusty; Globe-Winkelman-Hayden road in good condition; Roosevelt I'ayson road in fine shape. Maricopa County Frescott-W ickenburg road good; Rlack Canyon fair by way of Avenue 16. To Florence, new state highway out of Mesa. Tempe bridge open for light vehicles. Coast-Parker route best. Ajo road fair by Buckeye and Gila Bend. Navajo County Holbrook-Winslow road bad on south side of river. Tourists should take road just north of Santa Fe railroad. Bedahochi wash crossing impassable on Keams Canyon road. Use road just north of Twin Buttes. All other roads good. Whiteriver: Roads across reserva tion are rough but dry and hard except for a few soft places at the hlgher'ele vations. Pima County All main roads in the county in good shape; balance fair. Federal road to Mount Lemon is completed. Pinal County Mountain roads in good condition, valley roads dusty and rough. Flor-ence-Casa Grande road bad, due to reconstruction; take desert roads be tween these two points. Santa Cruz County Several storms last week: roads washed out in several places through out county. Yavapai County Roads in good condition. Daily rains but no washouts or high water. Yuma County Ehrenberg ferry open to traffic. Shaw, died Sunday morning, Aug. 15, at his home -on North Seventh avenue after a brief illness. Funeral services were held on Mon day, Aug. 16, at th First Baptist church in Glendale. A. large number of friends and relatives of the family were in attendance. Interment was made in the Glendale cemetery. JjpcaIBrie WIFE WINS DIVORCE On charges of desertion, Ethel I. He has been away from the local office for about a month. RECOVERS FROM ILLNESS I. J. Johnson of the New York Life, who has been seriously ill for the past three weeks at his home, 634 North First avenue, is improving and expects to be out and around again in about 10 days. MAIL CARRIERS INCREASED Ii line with the policy of the local postoffice to extend and improve thf city service as quickly as possible, three new carriers have been added to the force, according to an announce ment made yesterday. Three more will be added as soon as they can be ob tained. WIFE ASKS DIVORCE Declaring that he deserted her, Eliza A. Olivas yesterday brought suit for a decree of divorce from Jeorge Olivas. She asks that she be awarded the custody of their 2-year-old child and $25 a month for its support. FINED FOR BEATING .BOY On motion of Judge Carl Davis, assistant county attorney, a charge of aggra vated battery against Leon M. Fricke yesterday was reduced to a misde meanor to which he pleaded guilty and was fined $50 by Justice McKee. Fricke was charged by F. M. Wilkin son with beating his 13-year-old son, Marion Wilkinson. HELD ON STATUTORY CHARGE Florencio Escobar yesterday was ar raigned in the superior court on a charge of having committed a statu tory offense and was granted time un til next Monday.. Aug. 23, to enter his plea to the charge. The complaint was. made by Maxima de Escobar. Escobar is being held in the cOnnty jail under a bond of $1000, which he could not fur nish. DAUGHTER IS MISSING J. F. Ackley R. R. 6, has reported to the police that his 17-year-old daughter, Margarite, has been missing from her home since - Thursday. Before going the girl left a note saying she intended taking a trip to Los Angeles. She is described as an attractive blonde about 5 feet in he:ght and weighing 125 pounds. WANTS ITS INCREASE, TOO The Mascot & Western railroad wants its share. Though not one Arizonian in ten ever heard of it, it exists in Co chise county and now it has got into the record by making application to the state corporation commission for permission to claim its cut of the pro posed increase of intrastate rates for which the larger roads are arsking. That permission was granted though the increase itself has not been. AWARDED FOREIGN ORDER Commander Harold Jones, V. S. N., commanding the navy recruiting dis trict headquarters" at San Diego and embracing the sub-stations of Phoenix, Gobe, Riverside and El Centro,' Cal., recently was awarded by the Portugese government, via the state and navy de partments, the diploma of the ''Order of Avis,'' conferred for services ren dered during the world war. This or der was founded in 1162 A. D. Com mander Jones, was a guest in Phoenix with the Pacific baseball team on July 4, 1920. PLEADS GUILTY TO MAKING LIQUOR Rafael Armenta yesterday pleaded guilty in the superior court on arraignment to a charge of manufac turing intoxicating liquor and will be sentenced next Monday afternoon at I o'clock by Judge Lyman. Armenta was arrested on August 6 by Deputy Sheriff Gilbert Blanco, when the lat ter found Armenta in the act of jerk ing a cooker filled with mash from a stove in a tent in the 1700 block or, East Madison street. A 50-gallon bar rel of mashmade from ground corn and potatoes was found in the back room of the place. Armenta according to Deputy Blanco had been grinding corn for more mash prior to his en trance. No liquor was found in thp place. HELDON LARCENY CHARGE Edith Barnec-. colored, yesterday was held to answer to the superior court by Justice McKee on a charge of grand larceny and was committed to the county jail when she failed to furnish a bond of $300. She is charged with taking rings and jewelry valued at $185. from Frank Smith, colored. Mrs. Barnes said Smith gave her the jewelry. Robert Barnes, the husband, was ar rested in Tucson last Monday on a charge of receiving stclen property and had in his possession at the time a pair of diamond earrings which Smith alleges that Mrs. Barnes gave her hus band. He will be given a hearing on the charge tooay before Justice McKee. Mrs. Barnes was arrested last Friday by the police in Phoenix. Constable Pickens of Mesa yesterday afternoon led a successful raid on the home of Sylvester Nelson, three miles northeast of Mesa on a ranch which netted a still, complete with coils and two and a half gallons of "moonshine" whisky. Nelson was not at home at the time of the raid, but was arrested later in Mesa by Constable Pickens and brought to the county jail in Phoe nix, where he is being held for arraign ment. The whisky was found in glass fruit jars hidden in a trunk in a bedroom of the home. The jars were covered with clothing. A milk can was found in the yard, and in a sack in a closet the officers found the top to the can and several fet of copper tubing. . The top of the can was fixed with two connections so that two "worms" could be operated at once. No mash was Jound. .Nelson stated to the officers last night that this was the first whisky he had ever made. o ,IS SENT TO LOS ANGELES Michael Sunar. the 13-year-old boy whose uncle died of heat exhaustion near Agua Caliente on Aug. 9 while on a trip by motorcycle from Los Angeles to Miami, left last night for Los An geles in care of the Juvenile Protec tive association. Young Sunar has an aunt living in Los Angeles and has been waiting in Phoentx since last Tuesday for a ticket from her which would enable him to return to the coast. The uncle, Marco Sunar, had lost both hands in a mine explosion, and one eye, and used two iron hooks on each arm-as hands. These hooks opened and closed by strings which ran up the arm and were ennected to the op posite shoulder. The motorcycle which he was riding from the coast had a side basket to it and was driven j by the uncle with a foot pedal and guided by clamping the hooks over the handle bars. Just out of Agua CaliH ente the cycle struck a boulder and broke the foot pedal on the car and one of the hooks from the elder Su nar's arm. Michael walked back .10 miles to Agua Caliente for help and the next day they found his uncle dead on the desert two miles from Agua Caliente. o HARDY VISITS PHOENIX Leslie C. Hardy, candidate for the nomination for the office of attorney general, was a visitor to the city yesterday from Nogales. EDITOR JAYNES IN CITY Allan B. Jaynes, proprietor of the Tucson Citizen, was a guest yesterday at the Adams hotel. BEAT WIFE, IS CHARGE Pedro Silvas yesterday was held to answer to the superior court by Justice McKee on a charge of aggravated assault and was committed to the county jail when lie failed to furnish a bond of $1000. Silvas is charged with beating his wife. Amada Weiss Silvas, with a harness trace. She stated that the beating oc curred when she refused to sell her ranch and turn the money over to Sil vas in order that he could go to Mex ico. Several weeks ago Silvas was ar rested on a charge of assault in con nection with a beating he is alleged to have administered to Mrs. Weiss. She had the charge dismussed and married him. Silvas was employed at vher ranch at the time. INTERRUPT DRINKING PARTY "I was just smelling a bottle of soda water ' when the policeman arrested me," asserted Pedro Gomez when he appeared in police court yesterday to answer a charge of being drunk and disorderly. Policemen Williams and McCloud, who included Loretta Thom as and Salvador Erada in their arrest of Gomez, explained that the three men were passing about two bottles, one containing soda water and the other a violent beverage.
