PAGE TWO (Section Two) THE ARIZONA REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 1, 1920 GRAN D INSTALLS LIGHT FIXTURES OF RARE RESIGN The electrical fixtures of the Grand Lafe have been supplied by the Walk rfr eCtrlc company of this city. In figuring on the lighting arrangements ior the new cafe, the management was Particularly desirous that something apoye the ordinary fixtures be in stalled. To this end the Walker com pany secured an indiTect lighting ar--IIge.ment wnich gives a maximum or-hwfvdiffused light and at the same time is Tiharmony with the decorative effects of the entire interior. ,.,The equipment of an up to date cafe like the Grand naturally calls for con siderable electrical equipment, among which the most important is the dish washer The electrical dish washer installed by the Walker company, is Quite the latest design obtainable. The machine thoroughly sterilizes the dishes. Another feature of the Grand which has been installed by the Walker com pany is the exhaust fan which com pletely changes the air in the rooms every thirty minutes. It is impossible tor the air in the cafe to become stuffy, there will always be an ever incoming supply of fresh pure air for the pat rons of the grand. The Walker Electric Company has m addition to equipping the Grand Care, completed several other import ant Jobs in Arizona. The entire Gold water store was re-wired by them, and the electdictl work at the Northern Ari zona Normal School, and at the state Industrial school was from their shop. o RECORD EMM 1 COMPLETION OF GENERAL CONTRACT Tom L. Weatherford has been the man behind the main guns in the cre ating of the Grand Cafe. As general contractor for the remodeling of the entire building in which the Grand is located, Weatherford has been busy for three months with a large force of men creating a modern up to date restaurant room. To this end it was necessary to put on an entire new roof, lay a new floor and put new plaster on the entire building. In addition to this the Interior ar rangements have practically been re created. The place fs in no manner the same as it was before Weatherford and his men took hold. It has been a tremendous Job and one which has taxed the resources of the Weather ford organization considerably, but they have succeeded in getting away with it in admirable fashion. Tom Weatherford is one of the best known young business men of the city. He has been in the past city inspector of buildings, leaving that important position to go into the geenral con tracting business. Since his entry fnto that line of endeavor he has been eminently successful, havig completed several very important jobs in this city among which is the Grand. HIGHEST GRADE- OF SHEET METAL WDRK DOPJE ST iW CAFE In every modern cafe tliere is a great amount of sheet metal work to be done. Especially in the kitchens and adja cent rooms is it necessary that this work be of the best quality. The Fast End Radiator and Sheet Metal Works having been doing this kind of work in Phoenix for the past eight years was called into consultation' as soon as it was decided to create' the Grand. C. K. Sewton, who is the head of the East End Radiator and Sheet Metal Work, stated yesterday that there has never been a more complete job of sheet metal work finished in Phoenix. It was their intention throughout to use only the best material and send their best workmen to the job. They real ized that in an institution as com pletely equipped as the Grand it was necessary that everything else be in harmony, and to this end nothing was left undone to make the job complete. o ARTISTIC INTERIOR DECORATION WORK H OF LOCAL CO! The entire interior decorating scheme of the new Grand Cafe was created by the Kirchefer Decorating company uf this city. It has long been an axiom in Arizona that when something beau tiful was to be created the Kirchefer Decorating- company was quite the proper place to seek. In fitting up the Grand in its elaborate style It was only natural that the management turned the entire matter over to Kirchefer. The color scheme which is of the most harmonious type is a product of Mr. Kirchefer's genius. He planned the entire effect and so successful has he been in putting hfs theories into practice that extravagant comment on the result is quite the most ordinary thing heard from visitors to the Grand. Included in the general scheme are six panel scenes painted on the walls. The pieces which are executed in a manner quite above the ordinary de corations, represent - the Roosevelt Dam, a scene on the Columbia river one in Switzerland and several from Maine. The large tapestry panels which oc cupy the major portion of the walls are an idea of Mr. Kirchefer's. They tendto create an impression of rich ness m the main room of the Cafe, and set off the pafntings which border them in a highly desirable manner. ! O WRONG AGAIN "Now, just listen to our new neigh bor talking to her baby," said Mr. Dub waite, who was sitting by an open window of his apartment. "That's what I call mother 'love.' "You ought to see her 'baby, " re plied Mrs. Dubwaite, with a sniff. "That 'ittsy, pittsy, pecious' she's rav ing about runs around on four legs." All sorts of pastry including French pastry and eclairs will he supplied to the Grand by the Phoenix Hakery. The special French rolls which will be served for breakfast at the Grand will come from the ovens of the Phoenix bakery hot and fresh every morn.'ng. The phoenix Bakery has been one of the leading institutions of its kind in Phoenix for a good many years. They have built up a large business on a thoroughly modern policy and their large list of patrons will be pleased to know that their products are to be found at the Grand. BARKER'S BAKERY WILL SERVE CAFE S In the days of yore when the Grand Cafe was known as the St. Frances, one of the big features of the latter cafe, was the excellence of its bread and pastry. Frequently comment was made on those products and many times inquiry was made as to what bakery produced them. The answer always was "Barker's Bakery." Again Barker's Bakery will help fur nish products from their ovens. The management of the Grand realizing the qualities of the delicacies coming from the Barker Bakery have taken steps to provi'de for an adequate sup ply at all times. The Barker Bakery is one of the most modern institutions of its kind in the west. The plant from which the famous Barker Bread is issued is san itary to an extreme and every precau tion is taken to keep it that way. o H 0 T BEEF TO BE USED The policy of the management nf the new Grand Cafe which will open if doors to the ptiblic this morning: will be to buy the best of everything. In asmuch as nothing is more undesirable than poor meat, they have taken ex treme pains to insure a wholesome supply of first class fresh beef. The Phoeni'x Wholesale Meat com pany will be the source from which the Grand will secure its beef. Only steer beef which has passed certain specifi cations will be used by the Grand. o SUCLi IP Rochester woman complains be cause her husband "makes such a racket when he drinks soup." Last time he imitated a boiler fac tory getting on the outside of a bowl of soup his better half beaned him with a rolling pin. Naturally enough the injured hus band called on the police court judge. Called because a cop handcuffed to him was going that way. For aftei meeting that rolling pin the loving husband walloped his wife on the eye both eyes, to be accurate, and she yelled for the copper taking a snooze under the shade tree only a block away, "Judge, yeronner," she said, 'it makes me sick just to see that man eat, and seeing him isn't the worse; it's hearing of him eating that maTies me incapable of resisting the longing to hit him." There are other people who just can't stand this or that thing. F'rinstance "It makes me fighting mad to see a blind pig," asserted the well-known Pussyfoot Johnson. And according to a truthful histor ian the famous Marshal d'Albert would faint at the sight of a pig, not one of the blind variety, but just an ordinary hoglet. Henry III, who boasted that he wasn't afraid of man or devil, would ftint when he saw a cat. ' Which inspired Bill Shakespeare to jot down a line or 2 to this effect: Some men there be olve not a gaping pifr. Some that are mad If they behold a cat. Queen Anne abhorred the smell of roses, and King Vladislas sickened at the smell of apples. And Squire Abner Harpington kicks up a fuss every time his wife cooks cabbage in the house. Doctor Pillsan Powders calls our at tention to the fact that all animals dislike the castor oil plant. But none of 'em dislike the product any more thnn the little boy. Hiram Johnson gets dizzy when you mention League of Nations in his near vicinity. And W. Wilson has a re lapse when somebody says Reserva tion within his hearing'. The ringing of a school bell in the early part of the day has been kriown to make many a boy deathly ill. The calling of a bill collector at the front door often brings about the sil ence of the grave throughout the en tire house. But, believe you me. nothing makes a married woman half as angry as to have her old man s;iy. "What another new hat? I thought you bought one only a year ago last summer." o LEGION OF HONOR FOR A COOK For the first time in the history of the Lesion of Honor n rook has be admitted to membership: but M. fJ coffer, the cook in question, is no or dinary cook. Since the close of the Franco-Prussian war ho has been at tached to the staffs of leading Paris and London restaurant.--, and has served as chef at state (vnners in Spain. Germany, Italy. Youth's TILE FLOOR LENDS RICH COLORING TO CIFE'S INTERIOR The floors of the Grand Cafe are tile throughout. Believing in the policy of putting down something which will stay and never need repairs, the man agement of the Grand early decided that it would be best to install tile floors. James N. Petty of this city, in stalled all of the flooring, and like wise placed the tile around the iront of the building, lending to ft a rich ness of appearance which could not be gained with other kinds of decora tions. Tile fronts for buildings are the coming thing according to Mr. Petty who is thoroughly conversant with the manner i'n which modern buildings are being put up. There are inumerable colors and designs from which to pick and the beauty of the whole thing from the standpoint of the economical man is that the first cost is the only cost. There is never need for repairs or painting, the tile stays and according to Mr. Petty there is no argument to the contrary. Mr. Petty is carrying a large stock of tile on hand and is in a position to do that kind of work on short notice. U GAEE INSTALLS L IT The entire plumbing of the Grand Cafe is new. Of course the old plumb ing was serviceable and all of that, but in order that the latest style of sanitary plumbing might be installed, it was decided to tear out all of the old pipes and put in new. S. C. Lovett was the plumber se lected to do the work. Mr. Lovett has been in busfness in Phoenix for the past eight years and during that time has installed plumbing in some of the largest and best known buildings in the city. In addition to installing the plumbing in the Grand Cafe, which in these days of rigid inspections is a rather particular job, Lovett piped the cafe for gas and lights. Mr. Lovett's passion is sanitary plumbing. He has a thorough knowl edge of how modern plumbing should be installed and is always ready to advise prospective builders on their plumbing needs, regardless of whether he installs the work. HISTORICAL OAK TREE FALLS EASTOX, Md. One of Talbot coun ty's historical trees was destroyed by storm recently. The large white oak in the rear of the brick meeting house of the Society of Friends, known as Third Haven meeting house, was up rooted and fell with a crash. The tree made kindling wood of fifty feet of shedding where the Friends were wont to hitch their horses and teams, when attending service. This tree was one of the original grove under which William Penn of Philadelphia preached when touring Maryland, and where Lord Baltimore one time worshipped. A tree like this fell five years ago and about five years previous to that one other fell. Exchange. o THE DIFFERENCE Willie Paw, what is the difference between an engaged girl and a married woman? BOI TBI AIMS TO SUPPLY BEST MEAT The Bon Ton market will be one of the sources of supply for the Grand Cafe. Following their policy of pur chasing only the best of everything to eat found on the local market, the management of the Grand will secure a large part of its meat supply from the Bon Ton market. The meat which the Bon Ton will supply the Grand will be of the best grade obtainable and will have to an swer certain specifications before it will be accepted. The Bon Ton does not anticipate any trouble on this though, as it has always been their aim and ambition to supply only the best food stuffs to be secured. War department records show that the first "American Legion" was founded in 1792, following the Revo lutionary War, and its existence by that name terminated in 1796.
