ence and Rave an attentive ear and an

K. S. Clark of Prescott. Republican
candidate for the United States senate.
His fame as an orator had already pre
ceded him and he ran true to form.
Senator-to-be Clark is dignified, yet
affable, scholarly, yet intelligible, wit
ty and serious, and master of the sit
uation at all timesV lie made no rash
promises about installing the San Car
los dam the second week after he had
taken his seat in the senate, but did
drive home and enthuse his audience
when heanounced that the San Car
los dam would soon be an assured re
ality and that he would and could do
as much as any other man in securing
this great project for the people of
this valley.
Hon. A. A. Jayne first adressed the
audience upon his candidacy for the
county attorney nomination and in the
absence of his opponent, D. A. Little,
who had been asked to attend, he cour
teously explained and replied to the
charges that had been hurled at him
by Mr. Little and his Democratic cam
paign manager, Stephen H. Abbey.
Judge Jayne is a practicing attorney
of over fifteen years' experience and an
orator and speaker of no small ability,
-frimself, and he held the respectful at
tention and approval of his hearers. He
explained that after he had been urged
to run by Republican leaders, he then,
at Little's own suggestion, had offered
to pay up Little's campaign expenses,
amounting to $150.00, which was agree
able to Little, but that, later. Little at
tached the proviso that his manager.
Abbey, must be taken care of. mean
ing apointed deputy county attorney,
else he would not withdraw from the
race. Jayne thereupon absolutely re
fused to have anything to do with providing-
a future berth for Abbey, so.
thereupon. Little announced he would
not withdraw.
County Chairman Treat ably presid
ed at this meeting and introduced oth
er Republican candidates sitting upon
the platform, who responded in a few
words, after receiving the applause of
the audience. Those present were Lem
uel P. Matthews, candidate for state
senator; George N. Hall, state repre
sentative; tz. a. 5yers ror treasurer;
W. I. Davidson for supervisor, and
Brax Morrisqn for sheriff.

Greeting:
Not being able to write to all those
I know in the state, I take thi's means
of calling your attention to the fact
that we have the opportunity of vot
ing for a truly great man in the pri
mary for the nomination for United
States senator Mr. E. S. Clark.
He has always been the champion of
every good thing that has been intro
duced in our state. He has worked for
prohibition when that was an un
popular issue. He has always been
the friend of woman suffrage. Mr.
Clark Is the father of three song to
whom he has been a splendid example
of clean manhood.
Women of Arizona, today we want a
man of this stamp and character to
represent us in the United States sen
ate. Mr. Clark is a pleading speaker
and you have only to look into his face
to know that the things he says with
his lips come from his heart.
He will-not be elected by the monied
interests, but if he is elected it will be
by the good, clean people of Arizona
who will put apathy aside and get out
and work for him. I appeal to all my
friends in Arizona to get out among
your friends and speak this good word
for Mr. Clark.
Let us nomfnate him in the pri
maries and then, I know .we can elect
him in November.

The secret is out. Tom Maddock has
at last taken the public into confidence
as to why he entered the race for the
Republican nomination for United
States senator alter three others had a
long start. "Tom" wants to go to the
senate. For this and no other reason
he has thrown his hat in the ring.
This he makes clear in a statement is
sued yesterday in response to a de
mand from a reporter that he di's
close the motives back of his action.
The statement follows:
"I have been accused of entering the
senatorial race in order to muddy the
water and beat someone. This is only
a part of my transgressions. I am
trying my best to beat by any honor
able means three Republicans for the
nomination, in order to beat the
strongest Democrat at the election.
"It is said that I desire to compete
with Captain Robison for the ex
soldier vote; that I am trying to split
the progressive vote to defeat Mr.
Clark; and again they say that I am
trying to cut into the standpat vote
in order to hurt Mr. Cameron. I am
absolutely impartial in my desire to
defeat the other candidates; in doing
this, I am asking the support of no
particular group or clique.
"It is the fortune of politics that
some of us will be defeated. If the
Republican voters of this state are of
the opinion that any of the other can
didates has done more for his party;
would be of greater service to the
state ticket i'n general; that he is bet
ter qualified for this high office and
in it can do more for our state; that
he has a better chance for election;
that he would be freer from outside
influence or that his integrity or word,
in business or politics, is better than
mine; I hope they will support him.
Regardless of any ambition of my
own, I desire him to win, whom the
party, as a whole, considers the best
man.
"The fact that I have been but a
short time in the race is to my dis
advantage, only, and should not be
used by any other candidate as an ex
cuse for hVs possible defeat,?

NEW YORK, Sept. 3 Official gov
ernment opinion in Mexico on the
death of President Carranza places
the blame on General Mariel as the
man personally responsible, according
to a statement given out today by Dr.
Alvaro Torre Diaz, new Mexican min
ister to Brazil who is stopping en route
to Rio de Janeiro. He was a confi
dential agent of the new Mexican gov
ernment in Wrashington for three
months.
"Several days before the death . of
Carranza, General Mariel surrendered
with all his forces to General Pablo
Gonzalez," Diaz said. "General Ma
riel gave" orders to General Rodolfo
Herrero, but not wishing to carry
them out himself, Herrero in turn
passed the orders on to Colonel Mar
quez, who led the attack which re
sulted in the assassination of Car
ranza." Declaring his statement the first
public one regarding official opinion
in the matter. Dr. Diaz said, "full
justice" will be meted to Mariel, now
imprisoned by criminal processes tak
en up by the state of Puebla.
Discussing the political situation in
Mexico, Dr. Diaz said the new govern
ment had the confidence and support
of all the people, including thousands
or lormer rebels.

HUNS ACCEPT FRENCH DEMAND

PARIS, Sept. 3 Germany has ac
cepted the French demands concerning
the incidents at Creslau, which includ
ed an attack by a German mob on the
French consulate.
Dr. Simons, German foreign minis
ter, so informed the French embassy
today. The demands differ on one
point irom tnose formulated in the
note or August 31.
France consents that the regrets of
the German government shall be made
at tne emoassy by the Prussian minis
ter of foreign affairs and interior.
