GLEN'DALE. Sept. 3. There has
been various rumors circulated the
past few days that the cotton market
had opened and that several of the
buyers were in the market for cot
ton. All 1 through the day various
ranchers of the Glendale district have
called on the buyers and asked just
what cotton was eoing to open for. So
far the buyers have had no word from
their houses and so canont Rive any
satisfactory information. However, as
soon as the word is received it will be
passed along so that those wishing to
sell may have a chance to do so.
Opens Barber Shop
M. T. Bray, well known Glendale
resident, has just opened up a barber
shop in the basement under the Engle
hardt store. He wishes to meet all
his old friends and assures them of
first class tip-to-date service.
Wayland In Glendale
Roy Wayland, genial crruggist of the
capital city, was in Glendale Friday in
the interests of his campaign. Mr.
Wayland is on the Democratic ticket
for supervisor.
Return From Auto Trip
J. J. Gump and family returned this
week from an extended tour of the
state and report a very pood time.

Bank Contract Awarded
Fred Walsh, local contractor, was
awarded the building contract to con
struct the new Glendale Bank of Com
meree. Already material is on the
ground and the work will be rushed
through to a iinish so that the building
may be completed and the bank ready
ior occupancy.
Brooks Goes On Vacation
C C. Brooks, cahsier of the Glendale
State bank, left Thursday evening for
a vacation that was verv much nwriofi

out the summer season and now that
the fall will soon be here the needed
rest will give the added pep for" the

Stapley A Visitor
O. S. Stapley, candidate for state
senator, was in Glendale Friday morn
ing calling on the various businesses
and renewing" old acquaintances.

BOXES TO PBECKTS
The work of taking the ballot boxe
to each of the polling places in the
precincts began Thursday. Miss
Miriam Grau and Miss Sue Fauley
were busy all day packing each of the
ballot boxes with the supplies neces
sary for the taking of the votes in the
primary next Tuesday. Each box,
when leaving the supervisors' office.
contained one copy of the election laws.

two poll lists, two tally lists, two chal
lenge lists, two certificates of voters,
one large envelope for the return of
the ballots, one box of miscellaneous
supplies, one copy of the precinct
boundary, voting certificates, and a
cloth ballot bag. Each box was locked
and an envelope on the outside ad
dressed to the inspector contained the
key to the lock. The ballots and the
precinct register will be sent separ
ately.
PROTECTIVE TARIFF
URGED BY FARMERS

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 3 Congress
is urged to revise tariff Legislation to
include a protective duty on all orig
inal vegetable . oils and other raw
commodities when their free admission
"acts adversely to the interests of
American farm producers, in a reso
lution adopted today at the meeting of
the national board of farm organiza
tion. The resolution ass congress to

If the sky is the limit in jDOker, then
the universe is the limit in aerial trans
portation. So great has been progress
in such transportation recently that
even the government is marveling and
the people of Phoenix are wondering.
A long cherished dream of Phoenix has
been to be on a main line. It is said
that one of the first things Thoenix
should do officially is to provide a
landing fi'eld as specified by the gov
ernment, and that this would put it on
a main line.
In chamber of commerce " informa
tion as to the rapid advancement of
aerial mail transportation is this:
"The air mail service of the United
States postoffice department is the
only -commercial airplane service in the
world which has continued in unbroken
operation from the date of its estab
lishment, nearly two years, ago. Its
performance has been more than 90
per cent. Air mail letters go at the
same rate of postage as is paid on
train letters 2 cents an ounce. Its
schedules are so woven in with train
schedules as to expedite letter mail
from 12 to 16 hours to the public, in
eastern areas. In western areas now
being established the reduction m
time will be much greater. The ser
vice thus far established is saving the
public J1?0.000 a year. A mail piase
with 400-nound mail eanacitv has dfs-"
placed a 60-foot car between New
York and Chicago. This service be
tween New York and Washington by
railroad .costs at the rate of $165,000 a
year, whereas the faster service by air
plane costs only $120,000 a year."
Chamber of commerce information
as to commercial air traffi'c includes
the following: "A recent survey made
by the Manufacturers' Aircraft asso
ciation discloses that at least 50 aerial
transportation companies are in pro
cess of organization. Some of them
will never get beyond that pomt, it is
true, but the others, if properly offi
cered and financed, , have wonderful
opportunities for expansion. Indus
trial concerns have been compelled to '
adopt airplanes to facilitate trans
portation on certain occasions. The
number of companies using air craft
and endeavoring to place such trans
portation on a paying basis Is increas
ing. There is a real tendency on the
part of all manufacturing and operat
ing companies, Buch as the passenger
and freight carrying services, to prac
tice straight flying, eliminating the
element of risk attached to exhibition,
stunt or trick performance.
"Aircraft are being used for 'pleas
ure travel. Quantity production soon
will "be possible and this is most need
ed at present for aerial passenger traf
fi'c. The war machine must go as a
type. It is rapidly being supplanted
by vehicles for straight flying which,
all 'things considered, are as safe as
any vehicles on earth. Planes do not
fall to earth any more, nor do they
tear apart in mid-air.. Expert engi
neering based on the laws of physics
has provided against this. There ars
at least ten different types of machines
on the market today which are built
for straight flying. By actual tests
these are as safe as motor cars or
other conveyances that travel faster
than 15 miles an hour along congested
highways. These American machines
carry from one to 10 passengers. Some
of them are designed to carry 1.500
pounds of cargo, mail or freight. They
are in operation today. The next gen
eration will know as much about air
planes and flying as we today- know
about the automobile." 7
