J PAGE TWELVE THE ARIZONA REPUBLICAN, TUESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 7, 1920 of flu y if jot-' m 7 HI RADIO OUTFIT WILL TAKE MESSAGES AT RATE OF Oi!E THOUSflFJD WORDS IV1IK11TE It is not so very long ago since Jim 1 the village telegraph operator learned .to take twenty words a minute." This stamped Jim as an expert in his dav and soon he was in the Hoyt's Corner station of the valley railroad at a sal ary of $55 a month. That was Jim's future. Ftohi the village operator he went to the big station and from there to the trainmaster's office. Many of our noted railroad presidents rose from Jim's humble station and many of us have at one time or another toyed with the keys -and wondered what kind of ears Jim had to make sense out of the strange clicks which came in over the wire. Then came the dawn of a wireless age only a few years back. Remem ber the sensation when somebody an nounced that wires were not needed US record the dots, dashes and sent ences? Then on came Marconi and Cary and a number of others and soon w had transatlantic communication by wireless. History repeated itself for the Jims of another generation be gan all over to do what Jim did as a boy. They bought toy radio outfits and rigged up wireless apparatus on roofs and quickly we' were again a na- : tfon of operators. The war interrupt ed all thi3 amateurish delight and all kinds turned in to use wireless as a practical means of communication. It was greatly improved and much was learned from fields of foreign develop ment. Now comes the super achievement! Wireless wave words "at the rate of 1000 per minute. Try to talk a thous and words a minute; see if you come nearer to fifty than you to one hun dred. No human being can receive messages at the rate of a thousand words per minute. They had added some five, ten or fifteen to Jim's rec ord of 25 but that is the limit of hu man capacity. In a great plain on Long island, near New Tork, they are going to build a plant on a plot ten miles square. When completed the work will cost ten million dollars. It will be possible to si'gnal around the world from this plant. It will be five times as power ful as the famous station at Nauen or the French station at Bordeaux. The General Electric company of Schenec tady which designed much of the ap paratus is also credited with the re ceiving instrument which makes pos sible the record of 1000 words a min ute. The Instrument Is partly a photo graphic apparatus. A light weight mir ror flutters in electro-magnetic tune with the minute electric impulses com ing from the big steel towers out in the field. The oscillations vary Just as Jim used to vary his dots and dashes. The mirror then reflects a beam of light on a moving sensitized tape. The tape goes through a de veloping fluid and then just as on a stock broker's tape you read off the message. , There is a word in dot and dashes on every inch of the tape. The great value of this new inven tion is that it will allow a great num ber of messages to be sent during the day when atmospheric conditions are best suited for wireless. Ihis is Be tween 4 and 10 o'clock in the morning. A new electric marvel has been added to the category of wonder achieve ments. o S 1 T ELECTRICITY WILL ALWAYS BE BETTER The law of cooking all egg mixtures is slow cooking at a moderate tem perature. If we try to hurry the pro cess the result will be a loss in quan tity, a loss in digestibility and a loss in attractive appearance. When the white of egg is heated to 134 degrees, fine threads appear in it; it becomes semi-soh'd and is easily digested. If heated to 160 degrees, it is a tender white jelly, easily digested. If heated to boiling point, 212 degrees, it becomes a tough jelly and is less eas ily digested. If fried to 300 degrees, it becomes hard, horny and very indi gestible. Every one knows how scrambled eggs are usually prepared. A lump of butter is dropped into a pan and wh it is sizzling hot, two eggs slightly beaten up with a little liquid are turned into the pan; they are then stirred round and round very rapidly and dished up. Is it any wonder that the eggs have a raw, underdone taste? They should be cooked slowly at a moderate temperature ;with an electric grill the temperature can be regulated as there are three degrees of heat pos sible, and the grill should be put on low heat. Do not stir the eggs round and round but move the spoon or fork back and forth in parallel lines. Scrambled eggs are easily prepared in the shallow pan of electric grill; for each egg allow one tablespoon of liquid which may be water, milk, cream or soup stock. When creamy, turn on to hot buttered toast and serve. o TEIIS COURTS ALL "LIT UP" BK JUICE For years tenis has been one of the most popular out-of-door sports in California. The natural attractions of the game itself and a climate that per mits its enjoyment on an average of 350 days a year has been the cause of this popularity. Of late, ways and means have been sought to increase the capacity of the now over-crowded courts. Some five years a&o, George Billings of Mill Valley installed the first over head electric lighting of tennis court in California at the famous Mill Val ley shell court. This installation was a decided success and enabled many a tired business man to enjoy his favor ite sport during the cool evenings. .Other courts in California have been similarly lighted with success, but the real tryout has come with the stand ard overhead installation on two of the public courts in Golden Gate Park, San Krancisco. It is the intention to give this installation a thorough tryout and if night tennis playing becomes popu lar with the public the other eighteen asphalt courts in the Golden Gate Park group will be similarly lighted. o CRUSHES HAND WHILE CAMPAIGNING SEATTLE Campaigning f in this state i3 a hazardous occupation. George B. Lamping, candidate for gov ernor, crushed his hand doing the same. A tree fell and struck the auto mobile in which he was riding. o Of the 470,000 men originally classed as deserters by the war department, closer observation and investigation narrowed this number down to 173,911. MBS IS BY ELECTRICITY HI ' mm mm While her mate was hdrstfn-; the mastodon oi stalking some piehistorio wild beast to its lair, the prehistoric woman with a bundle of twigs caie-Icpf-iy brushed the piled up debris1 from the cave-home leaving plenty of dirt behrnd. That was prehistoric clean ing. J-ator generations t"ok greit?.- care with the home cleaning' until in grand mother's day carpets were swept and rugs shaken and beaten in an honest effort to clean house. Such house cleaning days were a vast improve ment over the bunch of tsv::gs in the hands of the cave woman, b it in spite of the toil of later days, grandmother's house was never really as clean as she imagined it was. All the sweeping merely gather up surface dive, while bating stirred up the dust and dis seminated it into the surrounding at mosphere. Sweeping done the old way was the hardest kind of work. Dust ing was doing the work twice. Consider cleaning the new way with the modern electric cleaner. You can push it around with one hand and still not be tired. It is simple to operate, merely connecting a cord to any con venient outlet and turning on electric current. Klectric cleaners are such up-to-date, efficient cleaners that clean ing day has been reduced to clean."ng hour, almost. N The electric cleaner is the funda mental household help in the modern household. It is the housewife's first lieutenant to the war on dirt. A truly industrious cleaner is not satisfied with merely cleaning carpets and rugs. It comes with special attachments for cleaning upholstery, portieres, mat tresses, moui.Mngs. It will aerate pil lows and bedding. It will do high dust ing, so it is no longer necessary to mount a step ladder to dust mouldings and little ledges on which the dust gathers thickly. Digging out corners is now . done by pressing an electric button -while applying a long-handed suction tool to the offending- spott so that -one no longer stoops to conquer dirt. Cleaning with a powerful air suc tion gets all that deeply imbedded dirt that brooms and brushes would not budge and away it goes into the bag. Such ease and speed in cleaning make for cleaner, better homes everywhere.
