SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 6 Health
authorities from many parts of the
United States are expected to be in
San Francisco this month to attend
two meetings, one the forty-ninth an
nual convention of the American Pub
lic Health association and the other
the Southwestern Conference on Tu
berculosis. The conference will be
held September 10 and 11 and the con
vention September 13 to 17.
Means of helping American soldiers
who contracted tuberculosis as a re
sult of the use of gas in the World war
will be one of the principal subjects
at the tuberculosis conference. An
other matter to be considered will be
a proposal to educate the American
people regarding the disadvantages of
migration of tuberculosis patients to
the western states. Conference offi
cials say there has been an amazing
increase recently in the westward
movement of tuberculars.
Dozens of subjects will be up for dis
cussion at the association convention,
both in the general sessions and the
section meetings. "Relative Functions
of Official and Non-official Agencies
in Health Work," "The Geographical
Distribution of Disease on the Pacific
Coast" and subjects concerning the
bubonic plague will be considered at
the general sessions. The section meet
ings will take up, among other matters,
"Health Knowledge In Industry,'
"Food Factory Sanitation," "Relation
of Food to Disease," "Problems of
Canning." "The Story of the Sacramento-Water
Supply," "Municipal Ad
ministration of Health and Welfare
Departments," "Bolutismus." "The
Narcotic," "The Ultimate Control of
Drug Addiction," "Who Shall Nurse
the Sick?" "Mortality Incidental to
Early Infancy," "Child Hygiene." "The
Social Uses of Medicine" and "Mother
craft Instruction for School Girls."

6. Crashing through a hailstorm at an
altitude of 12,000 feet, Alexander Len
drum, Colorado Springs airplane pilot,
and G. B. Merrick, movie operator,
battled their way over the Pike's Peak
region in their race between Denver
and the summit of Pike's Peak. Pass--ing
Palmer Lake the storm was en
countered, with the stones falling so
thickly that the air was darkened.
Like a rain of bullets the hail dropped
on the plane rings or was again hurled
into space as the stones were splat
tered into tiny particles by the pro
peller blades. Lendrum did not at
tempt to fly around Pike's Peak sum
mit, but did make a flight along the
race course, where pictures were taken.
The Martin Sweet plane that started
from Denver was forced to land at
Castle Rock and G. L. Bilheimer and
A. E. Humphreys in a Curtiss did not
fly toward the reak, bdt returned to
Denver after coming to Colorado
Springs. The weather was too severe '
for flying or trying any stunts.
