THE ARIZONA REPUBLICAN, 'SATURDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 11, 1920 PAGE FY I FREIGHT RATE ITEST TO BE AY Arizona Protests Against Alleged Excessive Tariffs To Come Up Before I. C. C. Representative Arizona's fight for more equitable freight rates on cement shipments from California and El Paso will be taken before an examiner of the interstate commerce commission at a hearing to be held in the rooms of the Arizona corporation commission Mon day morning, starting at 10 o'clock. Other freight rate cases to be heard at the same time include sugar rates from California producing points to Arizona, rates on fresh fruits and vegetables from Montana, Idaho, Utah, Washing ton, Oregon and California to Arizona, and rates on cereals from New Mexico, and west Texas to Arizona. It-is prob ably the most important hearing of its kind ever held in Arizona, say members of the corporation commission.' Interest generally Is centered in the fight befng made by the corporation commission against existing freight rates, which are held to be unjust and excessive. The petition for lower rates was filed under the old rate of 32 cents per hundred pounds and be fore the 20 per cent increase became effective August 26. The existing rate is 40 cents a hundred. H. C. Keene, examiner for the Inter state commerce commission, will coo duct the hearing in this city. Promi nent railroad officials representing lines involved in the controversy are already beginning to arrive. Carrier representatives here include G. H. Becker of San Francisco, general freight and passenger agent" of th Santa Fe; Elmer Westlake, San Fran Cisco, attorney for the Southern Pa cific, and M. W. Curnmings of the Southern Pacific traffic department. Many Tariff Questions Numerous questions involvfng tar iffs will be fought out at the local hearing. It is expected. The Arizona corporation commission has prepared a mass of figures to support their con tention that a lower rate Is just and equitable. No particular rate Is being asked by the corporation commission. It is the contention of the Arizona commission ers that the existing rate is excessive but they leave the matter of fixing an equitable rate with the fnterstate com merce commission, which will ulti mately review the proceedings and claims. Other freight rate matters to be taken before the I. C. C. representa tive Monday directly affect living costs and for this reason wide fnter est is centered in the ultimate out come. A savings of several hundreds of dollars each year will result to resi dents of the state if the commission is successful in obtaining lower freight rates on sugar, fresh fruits and vege tables and cereals, ft is claimed. September 22 members of the cor poration commission will go to Los An geles to present their claims for more Just passenger rates from Missouri river gateway points to Arizona. New Mexico and Nevada. It Is the conten tion of the commission that Arizona porats are entitled to a lower passen ger rate than now exists and it points , out in this connection that the fare from Kansas City to Yuma is the same as the fare from Kansas City to Los Angeles and even 300 miles north of that city. COURT ATTENDED TO II MISSING DETAIL Dolores Valenzuela and Juan Diaz knew the happiness of complete (un derstanding. They had worked and planned together for five years in v building for themselves a home. Through many - hardships they had forged their way until they finally fitted up a neat comfortable place for themselves at 232 South Second street. But in planning for the future to gether they had overlooked one phase of domesticity which remained for Po 1 iceman Williams to call to their at tention. He arrested them for violat Ing ordinance 160. "Do you want to get married?" asked Judge Thomas of each of the defend ants when they were brought before him in police court yesterday. The question brought forth two affirma tive answers. "When?" Policeman Blea acted as interpreter and declared the couple was ready to go through the ceremony at any time It was then 4:30 o'clock p. m. "Send a man to the court house with this couple to assist them in get ting a marriage license and let him act as witness to the ceremony, in structed the judge. Ten minutes later Juan Diaz ob tained a license and was standing with Dolores Valenzuela before Judge R. C. Stanford, who pronounced them man and wife. As they left the court house, arm in arm, they were greeted with .a chorus of birds. Mendelssohn does not have the exclusive on wedding marches. o n .
