Every fighter in the valley and some from other, points will be given a place on the program, which will be staged for charity. Mrs. Leonel Ross O'Bryan,. known to the newspaper fraternity and readers of the. feature pages as '"Polly Pry," is in the city in the interests of the American and French Children's league for the relief of the little children of devastated France. Mrs. O'Bryan is touring the country arranging "Poppy drives" to raise funds for the French kiddies and when she arrived here she met Jimmy Curley and Billy McCann, old friends of the O'Bryan family. Curley and McCann tried to figure out Borne way to assist Polly Pry in her work and they hit upon the idea of a boxing carnival. The plan appealed to Polly and she agreed to let the boys try it out hence the big show at Tal ly's arena Saturday night. Manager Tally offered the free use of the arena; Matchmaker McAhren offered his help and McCann and Cur ley promised to get the boys together. McCann will box four rounds with Mickie Farrell of Los Angeles in the main event. McCann is donating his services free of charge and Farrell is coming from Los at Curley's invitation and is not charging a cent for his work. Walter Sinclair, Dynamite McCarthy, Battling Scotty, Battling Sam, Young Rufus Williams, the Lewis twins and a number of other youngsters ''will take part in the program. In addition several local performers will entertain between bouts with singing and vaude ville sketches. The program now be ing arranged will be the biggest char ity event ever offered the amusement lovers of the valley. Seats will be sold , at 50 cents, 75 cents and $1 and every cent will be given to the fund for the relief of the French kiddies. This is an exceptional opportunity for the fans to help a worthy cause and receive the biggest entertainment ever offered for $1. Any "boxer or entertainer who is willing to donate his services for Sat urday's boxing carnival is requested to leave his name with Billy McCann at the Adams hotel or with the sport ing editor of the Arizona Republican and a place will be reserved on the program for his special stunt. Several local singers have already agreed to help with the program, but there is plenty of room for more in order to give the fans a variety. Sam Clapham and Pete Saucr will probably participate in the show, giv ing a few athletic stunts in their par ticular line. Don't get your dates mixed and re member the boxing carnival at Tally's arena next Saturday night. In addi tion to the evening's entertainment you will have the satisfaction of know ing that your money is going to be used in one of the greatest philanthropic movements in the world; and you will receive your money's worth in amuse ment at the arena. New York today gained first place in the Ameri can league pennant race, with six points lead, while all five other con tenders of both major leagues lost to second division clubs by one-sided scores. The Brooklyn Nationals suffered j their first defeat in 11 games today j when Chicago batted Cadore hard, but Cincinnati and New York failed to take I advantage of the slip. The Reds had low score in Philadelphia and New j York fell before St. Louis. The Yan-j kees won their fifth consecutive game ; and made it three straight from De- ) troit. Cleveland and Chicago both were shut out, the Indians being un able to hit Rommelt of Philadelphia, while the White Sox could do little with Acosta of Washington. Tomorrow will be a day of rest for the pennant contenders, with the ex ception of Cincinnati and Brooklyn, who play Philadelphia and Chicago re spectively. "Babe" Ruth added another mark to his credit today when he scored twice and brought his season's total of runs to 147, equaling the American league record set by Ty Cobb in 1911. The bout is being staged under the auspices of the Amer ican legion and a capacity house is predicted. About two-thirds of the crowd will be ther in the hope of watching the hard hitting Indian "knock Carter's block off," and if reports from Cordo va's training camp amount to anything the boys will have their dreams ful filled. Benny Cordova is an old head in the game, 'but. he is just about the best two-handed fighter showing i'n these parts. If Cordova beats Carter, as the Ray wise ones predict, Benny will be matched with Billy McCann early next montb. The fight is creating considerable interest in Pinal county and special sections are being reserved for Super ior, Hayden, Florence and Tucson fans. Ralph Pena, a former Hayden star and at the present time one of the reg ulars at Vernon, will box in the semi final against a "ringer" who has been imported from Peublo. Colorado.
