If he rememierc.i rietu,. the whole way Into the fisha mouth, and he had'run away and left It sticking. Now wasn't he glad, though, that he'd let It alone. All he had to do was to Mand .the fish on Its head and out would roll the penny as nice as pie. k "lipped to the bedroom shelf, tipped up Mr. Chub, as he called his fmh-bank. and out popped Mr. Penny. Then he flew to the atore, bought a tick of crawfish chewing-gum. and got to ftchool just as the bell rang to come to order, panting and perspiring, but happy as a king. There he was with a wad of chewing gum In his mouth, and five extra pairs of sharp eyes to watch him. For although Scribble Scratch, the fairy schoolmaster, was very keen of sight, with his big specks n everything, he Just couldn't see everybody do every little thing all the time, even with Nancy to help Nick, too, sometimes. But those others. He'd have stuck the chewing-gum Inside his desk, only there wasn't any Inside to it. just an outside, for the desks in Meadow Grove School were all atones, you know, the seats, too, for that matter. Markie rolled his gum into his cheek and sat still, managing pretty well when it came his turn to answer a question. But when-they started to sing and march oh my! He didn't know what to do. T aj m m m 1 YOU WILL PREFER IT TO LARD AND COMPOUNDS 3 and father and Bob joined ua girls In a private sitting room. Ann was "not with them. She had gone shopping; she could not be located. The nurses found a soft white blouse for Deborah. One after another they discovered some way of being kind to her. She was famous as the city's most charm ing debutante. She acquired new and more valuable honor with the nurses on account of the way she had staunched Jim's wound. "There's always a chance!" Such was Bob's brief report of the surgeon's verdict. Deb, hearing, made no sign that ehe heard. It seemed that she didn't dare to hope, that aha had no faith left in her. Mother and Daddy Lorimer went to look upon the still form of their son. No or.e else was allowed to enter the room, except his wife, when the should arrive. In time. Ann came. She had been at a matinee, and she looked aa if she might have come from the stage itself. Her skirt was the shortest her modiste would permit her to wear and her small rose was calclmined according to her old habit which she invariably relapses Into when she is going out Much Shortening ONE of the most embarrassing things for a housewife is to have her cake turn out "heavy" or her pie crust "soggy." Not only Unsatisfactory to the palate but the cause of many people saying: "Pies give me indiges-. tion" or "I can't eat pastry." Yet this is a condition easily avoided. Don't use too much shortening. You use lA to lA less ' Mazola ihan you need of cither butter or lard with better results. If it's pie, Mazola will make the finest, most delicate and easily digested crust you ever tasted. Or if it's cake both lightness and richness will result ;from using Mazola. And being an oil it is always ready for instant use-1-no tiresome "creaming-in." This is because Mazola is an absolutely pure vege table fat from an edible source. It is 100 fat con tains no moisture as is contained in butter and lard. Once you try Mazola you will prefer it to lard and other shortenings. There is a certain amount, of animal oil in all real leather and as this wears away it should be renewed if the leather is not to dry out and crack. Oil applied to leather will, of course, darken it but better faintly darkened leather than dried and cracked leather. Lemon or linseed oil is preferred for dark leathers. Paraffin oil is best for light upholstering. Let the oil stay on the leather as long as possible to sort of soak in. Then rub perfectly dry with a soft ab sorbent cloth. Unless all surplus oil is carefully wiped off the furniture will collect dust in an alarming fashion. She never dares to wear that alabaster mask when she is with one of the Lorimer women. Mother Larimer went with Ann to Jim's bedside. We In the outer room heard her shriek. Poor Deb rose to her feet with horrified eyes, her nails set deep in her palms. Ann screamed and screamed and in another minute two handsome white-coated young internes emerged from Jim's room. . supporting Ann's steps, each seeming unwilling to release her to the other. Then the head nurse took Ann in charge. I waa relieved when the silly bebe disap peared. "I hope they give her an anaesthet ic," whispered Chryst savagely. "Talk about class look at Deb then at Ann! Jim had a chance to survive until morning, the doctors assured Bob, who. with his father, remained at the hos pital. They sent us women home. The outcome of Ann's hysteria was ob vious: she was absolutely forbidden to entpr Jim's room again. Bob phoned early next morning: "He's improved! There's hope! And he keeps calling for Deb! The nurses think he wants his wife. But since Ann made that rumpus yesterday, they say it would be a crime to lot her come again. But what about Deb? Would she come? Some scandal, you know, Jane, if the gossips got hold of such a morsel!" "Deb wouldn't care about that!" I replied. "Bring her. then. Jim Is craay un managable.
