West Thoenlx Precinct, Maricopa County, Arizona. o THE BIRTH OF THE GALE Autumn winds and winter gales will soon be on us. What do ; ou know about the wind? . Wind is but air in motion. But do you know what sets air in motion and produces the gentle zephyr, the mode rate wind, and the violent gale? The principal cause is the variation in heat and cold. If the air could be kept at on t mperature there would be no wind. Again, do you knOw what heats tha air? You might hazard that the sun does, but you would be wrong. It is the earth, and the things on iL Heated air this you know expands and rises. Into the vrneuum thus creat ed cold air rushes. And there's tha wind! Cold condenses the air and squeezes it It descends, and into the huge up per vacuums thus made other air rush es. And there's a gale! These air movements, it must be remembered, are on a vast and widespread scale, al though it needs but a small first move ment of air to. as it were, set the ball rolling. Violent winds may blow for days without cessation not until, in popular phraseology "they have blown , themselves out." but until a more stable temperature has been produced. Contributory causes of wind-production are oceans, mountains, clouds, the rotation of the earth, etc. All these affect the temperature of the air, and produce wind. Finally, draughts are not, as is gen erally supposed, wind finding an in gress and willy-nilly entering it. Draughts only c.:st where there is warm air which has rarified and ascended. Into the vacuum comes the draught.
