from the reports of 1,570 manufac
turers and show that employment In
the state continues to decline slowly,
but steadily.
The present downward movement
started six months ago. The highest
point in employment during the sir
years covered by the industrial com
mission's records was reached last
March. The decline started in April,
with a reduction of 1 per cent, due
chiefly to the strike of switchmen.

recover that loss, but showed a still
further drop of less than 1 per cent
was reported for July. In August and

1S3-CARAT DIAMOND ON SALE
A perfect straw colored diamond,
naid to be the largest and moat costly
solitaire ever brought into the United
States, has arrived on the Cunard Uner
Aiult&nla from Southampton. It Is
owned by the ex-sultan of Morocco and
was In the possession of Frederick
Whlttram of the Mercantile Bank of
America, who brought It to this coun
try from Madrid as selling agent for
Its wealthy owner.
The stone, which weighs 183.15
carats, was once the central gem In
the Jeweled turban of Morocco's ruler,
A Mel Hand. The cares of his high
office caused El Hafld td abdicate In
favor of his younger brother, who now
rules Morocco. When he quit' the
throne he took with him all his worldly
ma mrA aattll In Madrid. Whenever
be needs cash he disposes of his jewels.
The big 'diamond had little charm for
him, so one day while talking to Mr.
and Mrs. Whlttram he said:
"You may take this diamond to
America when you return and as my
agent rispose of it to the highest bid
der." .
This casual offer amazed Mr. Whit
tram and his wife, and the latter asked
El Hafld why he trusted it to them.
"It is well," replied the ' ex-sultan.
"You both have good faces. I have
some fine square emeralds that I may
dispose of, but not Just now."
Mr. WhiKram sad he took the stone
before various gem experts of Paris,
but because ol its great size they said
It would be difficult to estimate its
value. Appraisers of the treasury de
partment expressed the same opinion.
The diamond was sent to the apprais
ers' store by the customs officials.

The man in the rainbow stockings
was trying to play golf. The difficulty
was, of course, to hit the ball.- It was
