One of America's greatest sculptors,
Cyrus Edwin Dallin, . was once a
wheelbarrow boy in a mine in Utah,
where he tolled all day for less than a
dollar. The miners uncovered a strat
um of white clay one morning and Dal- I
lln, forgetting his work, sat down and
begaA to model a likeness of one of
the workmen. So lifelike was it that
his teacher, when he returned to school
in the fall, sent It and some cf his
drawings to a state fair being held in
Salt Lake City. A rich mine owner
had his attention called to the little
clay bust and he offered to furnish the
boy transportation to Boston, where
he could enter an art school.
The boy worked long and hard and
by the time he was 21 he had a studio
of his own. He went to Paris Bbort-
lv afterward and began a series of
Indian poses, using the Indians from
the Buffalo Bill show, at that time in
France. His first masterpiece. "The
Signal of Peace," was finished at that
time and he was recognizea tnereaner
as one of the world's greatest sculp
tors. His "Ann Hutchinson" made for
the Boston state house: "The Medl
cine Man" in Falrmount park, Phila
delphia: "The Scout" In Penn Val
ley park, Kansas City, and the great
golden angel on the Mormon tempie
in Salt Lake City, are among his best

Eddie Guerin, who escaped from the
French penal colony of Devil s island,
la under arrest in London on a charge
of picking pockets and assaulting the
nolice. Guerin was sent to JJevu s
Island for life after a Paris bank rob
bery in 1901.

man In the United States, died at Tex
arkana. Texas. He stood seven feet
five inches.

Nome, Alaska, center of the gold
rush of 1900, when it had a population
of 15,000, now has only 200 Inhabitants,

Maccabees Will Meet
There will be a regular meeting of
the Maccabees Tuesday afternoon
promptly at 2:30, with refreshments
and Initiation. All members are urged

Parent-Teachers Association
The Parent-Teachers association of
Kyrene will hold a regular monthly
meeting next Thursday evening in the
school auditorium. All parents and
friends of the school are Invited to
attend.
Dance Given at the Hennes Home
A jolly party of Tcmpe folks spent
a most enjoyable evening at the dance
given at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Hennes, Saturday night. Sand
wiches, cake and coffee were Berved.
Mesdames Don Frankenburg, Byron
Redden and Jack Hennes were the
hostesses of the evening.
Greatly Improved
Little Bertram Bliss, who has been
paralyzed for several months. Is able
to take a few steps now with a sup
port. His parents are quite hopeful
of his entire recovery.

Miss Marion Williams, chief operator
at the local telephone office. Is con
fined to her bed with a severe cold.
