C. arrived in Phoenix yesterday in the interests of a Salvation Army drive to be conducted in Phoenix. Major Duncan is state director of the Salvation Army home service move ment for 1921. The object of the drive is to raise funds for the maintenance and im provement of theSalvation Army, one of the especial objects being a new permanent home in this city. Further details will be announced as soon as arranged. Central OF ROOSEVELT LOCAL DICE HILL REGULATION URGED BI WOMIS CLUB A resolution advocating the regula tion and supervision of pubhc dance halls of Phoenix was udopiod by the Woman's club at its icsutar niectin yesterday afternoon. Tht resolution was presented frotn the civics and edu cation department by Mrs. Ralph Cameron and Mrs. J. L,. B. Alexander, and w;as received with enthusiasm, members of the club immediately go ing on recprd in favor of th? proposed action. Mrs. Kldridge, formerly witii the California school for delinquent girls, and Dr. K. H. H. P.lome, director of vocational education, were the speak ers at the club's meeting. Mrs. Kld ridge spoke briefly hut very effecfive ly of the worthiness of the determina tion of ciiy officials and women's or ganizations to have a morally clean Phoenix through supervision and regu lation of public amusements. Dr. Blome's topic was the need of vocational education. He said he thought the decrease in public school attendance was due to something wrong with educational methods, and suggested vocational education as a remedy. The growth of vocational education and the good results it has brought everywhere it has been tried. were stressed by the speaker. A very good musical program was furnished by Mrs. Doane Merrill ami Kathleen Ilodgkins. The resolution adopted by the club read as follows: Whereas, the members of the Wom an's club of Phoenix are, with other citizens, deeply Interested in the phys ical, mental and moral welfare of the youth of our nation, and particularly the youth of this city, and Whereas, it has been shown to" us that the operation of the unsupervised public dance hall is a great iienaoe to our youth, and Whereas, while deploring the exist ence of the public dance hall and its attendant evil, yet we recognize it seems to afford entertainment to a large number of people whose time might otherwise be more illy em ployed, and we believe that the ill ef fects thereof will be lessened mater-, ially, it" not altogether eliminated, by proper regulation by city ordinance and supervision by city authorities, and that the public- dance hall, being a great evil unless properly regulated and supervised, it should be roq:iired to pay a license to the city to "Vc possible its adequate supervise,, i-y the city, and Whereas, the civics education de partment of this club ia studying this question; Now, therefore, be it resolved by the members of the Woman's club of Phoenix this 11th day of January, 1921, that our civics education department be empowered to represent us on this question to take all necessary steps to assist in bringing about an ade- ate i regulation and supervision of the I Civil war widows in the United I Women are emplovod as street pnh'io dance hall.
