WATER USERS
PUB FOS RELIEF
MESA, Jan. 18 In response to the
call for a water users' meeting Monday
night In the city hall, a crowd of farm
ers and business men that tajced the
hall to its capacity turned out to hear
F. A. Reid, president of the Water
Users, Superintendent Cragan and oth
ers speak. Representatives of both
sides of the water question wore heard,
and while no plan for immediate relief
was settled upon, a clearer under
standing between water users and of
ficials of the association resulted which
it is believed will be of great benefit.
The business as conducted by the
Water Users association was explained
by President Reid and Superintendent
Cragan and many points on which the
farmers have been in doubt and have
not unders(ood in the past have been
made clear. In response to the pro
posal that a supension of payments
be made, it was explained that the of
ficials of the association are limited in
their authority by the constitution and
regulations governing Its .operations
and that they have no alternative from
requiring assessments to be paid up
before water is issued.
A list of 20 farmers who are without
means to pay their water assessments
and will be unable to start another crop
unless some relief is secured was made
and the individual case of each one
will be taken up with certain banks
and ah effort made there to secure
sufficient loans to carry t hem through.
Death of Mrs. Hunsaker
Mrs. Melissa Hunsaker, 67 years old,
died Monday night at the family home
on the highway west of Mesa, fol
lowing a short illness from Influenza.
Mrs. Hunsaker came to Arizona with
her husband in 1S83 and a year later
located in the valley ner Mesa, where
she has since resided. She is the moth
er of 12 children, all of whom are mar
ried and live In this vicinity with the
exception of one daughter who died
some years ago. She also has 66 grand
children and eight great grand chil
dren. Funeral services for Mrs. Hunsaker
will be held from the Alma Ward chap
el west of Mesa at 10:30 o'clock Wed
nesday morning. Bishop Lafayette Hill
will preside.
Baby in Lesueur Family
XIr. and Mrs. Karl Lesueur are the
parents of a nine pound baby hoy born
to them at their home on South Hib
bert street Tuesday morning.
Aid Society Will Meet
The Ladies Aid society of the Meth
odist Episcopal church will hold an all
day meeting at the church on Thurs
day. All ladies of the church and con
gregation are invited to be present

is requested to take with her one arti
cle of cooked food for lunch.
No Parking Near Fire Plugs
Ten foot spaces on each side of the
plug were marked off Tuesday on all
of the fire plugs in Mesa, with the
added inscription in bold red ink let
ters, "Don't Park Here." The ruling
is in accordance with the city ordl
nance prohibiting the parking of cars
or other vehicles within ten feet of a
fire plug, linking spaces in the streets
which are customarily repainted about
the first of each year, will be delayed
a few weeks pending tne installation
of the ornamental lighting standards.

A. Wr. Boyle of the Boyle Tool com

Due to the ever increasing circula
tion and advertising the Chandler Ari
zonan, the local paper, has purchased
a new Cranform printing press which
will enable them to take care of the
Increasing business.
Grand Charivari
Not aware of what was in store for
them and taken by surprise Messers
Jack Brechler and Dr. A. J. Chandler,
the latest newlyweds, were taken from
their homes and paraded around town.
In the case of Brechler they tied him
to a mule and paraded him around the
streets into all the main stores and
then into the local moving picture chow
and taken up on the stage of the thea
ter and he niaed a short, appropriate
speech. Dr. Chandler was brought to
the moving picture show and hancuffed
to Brechler and he made a speech.
After the fun the newlyweds set up the
drinks for the crowd.

NEW YORK, Jan. IS. Trading in
the stock market today repeated in its
main essentials the uncertain arfd
professional tone of the preceding ses
sion .the idle drift of prices again de
noting an utter lack of public interest.
Despite the assurances of Governor
Harding of the federal reserve board
of a gradual return to normal condi
tions, the day's news, in its d.Tect rela
tions to financial, industrial and com
mercial conditions, indicated a con
tinuance of the readjustment of values
in all parts of the country. The work
ing force at one of the middle western
railway (shops was reduced by one-half
and advices from other centers be
spoke of further slackening of opera
tions. Almost the one encouraging devel
opment was the report of the controller
of the currency.
Less than a dozen stocks made up
the bulk cf the day's contracted opera
tions. Of these, Xlexican petroleum
crucible steel, Atlantic gulf, Baldwin
locomotive and United States steel
were mo5t prominent.
The final hour was enlivened by the
buying of food, leather and shipping
issues, net gains of 2 to 5 points being
registered by Food Products, Central
Leather and United Fruit, General As
phalt also rising 4 points on steady
accumulation. California Petroleum
gained 4 points, but other oils were
reactionary. Sales were 465 shares.
Rates for call and time loans were
unchanged, although offerings were
unusually large.
Liberty bonds featured an other
wise dull bond market, the first 4'.4s
displaying especial strength, most of
which was retained. Sales, par rmlue
810,275,000. Old United States bonds
were unchanged on call.
CinCAGO. Jan. IS. Wheat under
went a sag in price today owing more
or less to reports that Italy had can
celled some of her purchases. Besides
domestic demand appeared to lack in
volume. Selling pressure, however,
was only of a scattered sort. Open
lng quotations, which rangied from un
changed figures to lc lower, with
XIarch $1.754 SD1.76 and May $1.65
1.69, were followed by a little rally
and then by a moderate decline all
around.
Continued liberal receipts had a de
pressing influence on corn. After
opening lie to "ic lower, including
May at 70 71 ',4 c, the market weak
ened still further.
Oats were relatively steady, but dull
starting 4c to lie higher. May at
46 46,4c, and then becoming some
what easier.
