Any citizens who may have directories of that year which are of no use to them now will confer a favor by bringing them to the chamber of commerce. kIomie Parley Richards, contractor, engaged in the work of surfacing the Holbrook St. Johns road through the Petrified Forest, is in Phoenix in an endeavor to secure funds for the payment of the men employed on the work. Mr. Rich ards received a state warrant for the work in November and drew checks on the fund in payment of labor, only to learn that the bank would not handle the warrant. It 19 understood that the Navajo county portion of the 75 per cent state road fund is not exhausted as far as the appropriation is concerned, but the ruling of tho state treasurer that pay ments be made only up to the amount of taxes actually received has caused the banks to refuse to handle the war rants. The state highway department is endeavoring to secure a temporary advance from the highway commission of Navajo county in order to pay for work already done and to complete the present contract. The assistance will he only temporary, as state funds al ready have been appropriated and fed eral aid eventually will carry the cost of construction.
