LOUISVILLE SOUTHPAW BEST- MINOR PROSPECT The few men who have not bought their second pair of PARIS Garters are the ones still wearing their first. f jr axid up A. STEIN &. COMPJNY Chics no Take a tip buy Paris today- New York I a-4W'i' um -remember they've been BY DEAN SNYDER Tommy Long, diminutive southpaw of the Louisville Colonels, is the best pitching prospect in the minors to day, say many big league scouts. The 22-year-old youngster has started his third year in pro ball by ringing up two two-hit games, one against Toledo, the other against Co lumbus. If Long doesn't run into bad luck he is almost sure to add a second no-hit no-run game to his record this slimmer. He entered the hall of fame July 24. 1920. by holding Toledo hitless and runless for the route. In the two years he has been pitch ing for Louisville he has won 41 games and lost 25 for an average of .621. He is one cf the best fielding pitch ers in the association. Long doesn't want to graduate into the majors yet. He thinks he hasn't arrived. Until he does big league scouts will be out of order trying to sign him. "Anybody can go up." says Long. "The trick is in staying up when you get there. "When I go I want the satisfac tion of knowing I have conscien tiously prepared for the test. "Then if I fail 1 11 know that it wasn't due to slipshod preparation on my part. "I believe the best way to learn how to pitch is to pitch. "You can't learn sitting on the bench in any league. 'Td rather stay in a league in which .1 know they'll let me pijtch often." Long's trouble has been the same as that of most southpaws control. He's got it this spring. When hp first began to pitrh at Memphis, his home town, the kind pst thing said about him was Ihat hp threw with his lfft hand in the gpneral ilirection of the grandstand. Last year -he chewed more tobact-o than the rest of the Louisville club put together. Now he's cut out the habit entirely.. Result: he's gained 12 pounds in eight.
