J. Chandler. The history of Dr. Chandler's expressed faith in the possibilities of the land once only a desert waste and his constant labors in the face of adversities in order to make that land fertile by irrigation is one of the prides of the whole com munity. Just as the old pioneers faced one trial after another, so the story of Dr. Chandler's efforts to insure fertility to his acreage is filled with many disappointments. But if there is a definite reward for persistent efforts it came to Dr. Chandler when the great Roosevelt dam reached completion and the waters rushed through the main canals and ditches and turned what had formerly been only the home of the rattier and cactus into green pastures and fertile productive fields. "The garden spot of the world' seems to have been set down almost over night. Then came the toilers who saw the golden lights of the future and stock and grain made its appearance in this mammoth acreage as though a magic wand had swept the lands. A community center was then very much needed and Dr. Chandler re sponded by centrally locating a tract of land and platting it into a city. That was just nine years ago tomorrow, May 17, 1912. The whole city plan was definitely engineered by the founder and today that original arrange ment is still religiously carried out with the building of the mercantile houses around and facing a spacious park. Streets were made very wide and block after block sees the pergola overshadowing the sidewalk and reaching to the street. Those who had no vision laughed heartily when the beautiful and ex clnsive San Marcos hotel was erected near the park where just a few months fcefore there had only been desert sands and the jackrabbits, horned toads and lizards had reigned supreme. Hut the San Marcos soon proved to be one of the most talked of winter resorts in the whole nation and soon reser vations were eagerly being sought from the notables of other nations. , The San Marcos proved an immediate stimulus for an active and ener getic building campaign. Far-sighted business men came from other cities and immediately pictured their wares in a particular location. Two banks both of which much larger cities than Chandler would be anxious to boast, were erected. These stand today firmly as Gibraltar, unaffected by the depression that has shattered so many communities. The Lukin Grocery company was established and became the center for household provisions. The Halsted Lumber company with its great buying powers built a large mill and yard and served the whole community during its rapid building progress. Up-to-date drug stores were attractively built and the pioneers of the drug business of that vicinity, Gardner and Harmer, are today enjoy ing the steady business which their careful attention to business has merited. Restaurants such as the Chandler Cafe, allay any fear of the tourist or the citizen of Chandler of a possible shortage in the production of sub stantial meals. And Chandler has followed the lead of all other progressive cities by having an organized and active Chamber of Commerce which is constantly following a policy of civic betterment. Tomorrow Chandler celebrates its ninth birthday and YOU are specially invited to participate in the festivities prepared by the progissive populace for your enttrtainment.
