The Institute aims to provide a complete classification Index of all the books that were ever written. Since there are at present but 12 mil lion cards, it Is apparent-that the In stitute It at present far from achiev ing Its ambitious purpose." The cards are stored In four ranks of card cabinets, running from end to end of a room eighty feet long. They are classified according to the Dewey system, somewhat elaborated, and in dex both author and "subject, so that far less than 12 million books are rep restened by the cards themselves. A Manchester librarian criticises the Institute as being too ambitious to succeed, and suggests that. If it is to be genuinely useful, It ought to be supported by all the nations rather than by the Belgian government alone, as at present. If there is to be any International bibiographical Institution of the kind, he favors lo eating it at Washington, "because the Americans are a great nation of bib liographers." Living Age. Suddenly he gave vent to a little exclamation of Joy. -What's the good . news, Tom? asked another carrier. "You look as it someone had left you a million. The other man smiled. "I'll tell the world it's good news, he returned. "Here's a letter for old lira. Rogers from her boy. She's been worrying about not hearing . from him for nearly three months. Then the other man smiled. He understood. He, too, had mothers whose boys were lnrrequent writers. Courier-Journal. INDIAN WIVES NOT SLAVES Indian life and traditions are still largely misunderstood and erron eously interpreted in American plays and songs, says Miss Iva Rider. Her real name is Princess Ttalie Una launt, and she is a full blooded In dian of the Cherokee tribe, reared on the hills of the old Indian territory. Miss Rider emphasized that con trary to the general Impression that Indian women occupy a lowly posi-l ' tion in the home- and are slaves of their husbands, relieving them of all drudgery, Indian women have always ranked high in authority and esteem. Moreover, tribal welfare as regards women and children has always been largely in their own hands. I remember years ago at a tribal conference a while man commented on the. fact that there were more women present than men and conse quently that they had more voting power. The Indian man's tnswr 'was: "Why not? They have the home to represent." Within the home the India'n woman has complete authority and takes the initiative in everything pertaining to it. Genera tions nf maintaining the household and the children while her man was away fighting or hunting, trained her for responsioiiiiy aim ueveiuiicu within her initiative and tradition. Indian husbands have always con sulted their wives. Thn lot of the Indian girl is strik ingly different, however, from that of her elders. Formerly there was no i girl problem with the Indians, for the girls were married off almost be fore they entered their teens. "The authority of the girl does not come until after marriage, and in the present transition stage there Is much that is difficult for her. said TTnYike the white flapper, chafing under the restraints of an older gen eration Indian girls loin in a urn er., i.aro naid their elders., par- ticuiarly grandmothers .Grandmother 4a the highest term ui '"k" i8 von.
