EYTIWGE 1 I Los Angeles papers of last week announced at considerable detail, that the Universal film corporation has purchased an original drama written by Louis Victor Eytinge, serving a life sentence at Florence from Maricopa county. Eytinge's career as a prisoner has often been told in the magazines and newspapers and .now, after rising to unique heights In the field of adver tising, he has successfully attempted a new venture. Lucien Hubbard, who is chief of Universal's scenario staff, is quoted in the Los Angeles papers as saying that Eytinge's first .photo drama was so clever, appealing, so full of penetrating realism, that the company has decided to make the story into a super-feature, starring Herbert Kawlinson In the title role. It will go into production during the winter and may be brought to Phoe nix in the spring. The scenario Is of the "crook drama" variety and is called "Peter man," this last word being the slang term in crookdom for a safe-blower. The drama is based uporr Eytinge's short story, "Jack Gilbert, Peter man," printed In the Arizona Repub lican in 1907, but It has been elab orated to show how the "peterman" .comes back through arduous labors "in his own community and earns his standing by public service to his citi .zens. At the same time, while weav ing a strong romance Jn his story, Evtinge deals telling blows at the "Say It With DIAMONDS" MACK. GARDNER 45 North Central King of Diamonds blue-sky swindling promoters and his drama is an expose of heir opera tions. Critical commentors believe that Eytinge's handling of this expo sure will be of much value to the country in protejtir.r; unwary inves tors. Although he came of a noted theat rical family and had been long famil iar with the rules of drama, Eytinge gave up advertising work for the last several years to devote himself to an intensive study of the screen and other of his photoplays are ex pected to command great attention. o PLAN MS GIFTS TO PAPnGO KIDDIES Planning a happy holiday for the boys and girls of the Papago reser vation, the white brothers and sisters of the Indians who belong to the ! The prohibi tion party will continue to work as a political party along the same lines as in the past its national committee decided yesterday. Sentiment was against, changing the party's name and enlarging its major issues or for closing its affairs. The committee voted for deporta tion of aliens convicted of violation of the new prohibition laws and dis franchisement of citizens for the same offense. It called on the government to ask foreign nations to prevent exporta tion of liquors to be used in the United States In violation of the pro hibition laws and to solicit their co operation in detecting and punishing such violators. The next election work the party will undertake was laid out for Cali fornia, which votes in November, 1922. on a law enforcement measure. The party decided to get into the fight and to support former Con gressman C. H. Randall of Los An geles for reelection. Prohibition work that Virgil O. Hinshaw, chairman of the party, did in Austria, Cisecho-Slovakia and else where in Europe last summer was approved. o Urge President To Employ Offices In Behalf Of Tariff Republican A. P. Leased Wire WASHINGTON. Dec. 1. Presi dent Harding has been urged to take a strong stand In his address to con gress next week in behalf of pending tariff legifclation. Confidence was evidenced among many congressional leaders yesterday that the power of the executive would be put behind the bill now in the senate finance committee. The suggesetion was said to have been made to Mr. Harding that he recommend in the interest of speedy 8isposition of the measure, elimina tion of the American valuation plan from the house bill and the writing of a tariff law on the basis of the old method of invoice prices. He was understood to have been urged to ask congress then to include a provision empowering the executive to apply the American valuation basis of as sessing duties where, after surveys, it is shown added protection is needed. Another suggestion reported to have been given Mr. Harding was that the house bill provisions regard ing anti-dumping be stricken out and a law, described as "having teeth." be enacted supplementary to the tariff. Some Republican members of the senate finance committee declared today that even with a call by the president for more speed, there could hardly be a tariff law before MarclT. One declared it would be May before the bill became a law. Says Bloc Will Kill Plan For Sales Tax To Get Bonus Funds Republican A. P. Leased Wire WASHINGTON. Dec. 1. Repre sentative Dickinson, Republican of Iowa, issued warning last night that the house agricultural bloc was pre pared to kill any plan for adoption of a sales tax as a means of raising revenue to pay the soldiers' bonus. The J3I0C. he said, would place noth ing in the way of bonus measure it self, but would content Itself with defeating efforts to raise the money by the sales tax. He declared suf ficient votes were on hand to elimi nate the tax if it were attached to the bonus bill. The bloc leaders have half a dozen forms of taxes which they will offer as means of raising the needed funds for a bonus, according to Mr. Dickin son. He mentioned among these, taxes on gifts, lkiuor, Inheritance and community property. His warning aroused comment among house members, some holding it was a step toward ending house action by special rule which has limited debate and. it has been charged, permitted few and some times no changes in measures as brought in.
