Senator Quay intends to push his
fight for statehood for New Mexico,
Arizona and Oklahoma.
Another foolish woman has drcrmed
that there is buried treasure at Gran
Quivera, and is soliciting funds to dig
lor the supposed Spanish gold.
The city of Santa Fe will make a big
mistake if it is niggardly with the
Santa Fe Central Railway company in
the matter of terminal facilities.
The largest Mlver producing country
in the world is Mexico, and not one
thiid of tlic available silver producing
sections have even been prospected.
El Paso is a live city and has cap
tured Albuquerque. At the midwinter
carnival next January Albuquerque
will send a thousand visitors to the
Pass City.
The Pecos river is to.be uted 'o
operate a big electric power plant at
the mouth of Marco Canyon. Santa
Fo and Las Vegas will lie supplied with
powtr enough to operate sinalf fac
tories. Perhaps liy the time the government
loses many thousands of dollars by
forest fires, wise Washington officials
will consent to the expenditure of a
few hundreds in order to furnish re
serve protection.
It is reported from the office of the
commissioner of pensions that the
number of pensioners April 30 was
998,303, and that there were 355,259
claims pending, of which 33,611 are
due to the war with Spain.
Statehood is assured. The bill will
be reported to the senate on the 10th
day of next December and its adoption
is certain. The fight has been well
conducted by Delegate Rodey and oth
ers having the bill in charge.
The report on the mule camp at New
Orleans has been made public, show
ing that $18,000,000 worth of horses
and mules were shipped from that
port, about 175,ooO animals being sent
in no less than 166 voyages. The st
tion was not used for reci uiting men
or operating in any way against the
neutrality laws.
The next of the states to hold elee
tions of any consequence are Vermont
and Maine. Vermont votes on Septem
ber 2 and Maine on SeptemU-r 8. Two
states have already voted this year
Louisiana in April and Oregon on
June 2. Alabama will vote on August
4, Arkansas on September 1 and Geor
gia on October 1.

triumphs of the republican party it
will lie remembered that when it sue
cceded to office five years ago the
finances of the country were in a per
ilous state and that now the credit of
the country is the best in the world

tional debt Is actually less than it was
when the republican regime began.
The tobacco factories of Mexico pro
duce more than a billion cigars an
nually, and in 19i0 the output of cigar
ettes numbered 376.000.000 packages.
The Tucumcarl Pathfinder has spoil
ed a sensational murder 'story. It says:
"Several daily papers are having ex
tensive pipe dreams about killing
scrapes in the vicinity of Tucumcari.
There is no truth whatever in th
story of five cow punchers being killed
thirty-five miles east of here. There
are no mountains thirty-five miles east
of here."
A mammoth "iron elephant" for the
St'. Louis world's fair is the creation
of Joseph Husak, of Chicago. The
body of the metallic animal Is to be
four stories high, the floors to be
reached by elevators in the legs. On
top of the elephant It is proposed to
have a roof garden and observatory.
This monster elephant is to be 300 feet
long and 250 feet high.
BIG LIQUOR BILL.
According to the United States cen
sus, the production of liquors stood
fifth in rank in 19un, as regards the
amount of capital invested, and sev
enth as respected the value of prod
uct. A special census bulletin, just is
sued, gives many details of interest
illustrating the extent of this branch
of manufacturing. The amount invest
ed in 2.850 establishments reporting is
given at $457,674,087 and the value of
the product at $340.61 5,46. The out
put included 1.198,602.104 gallons of
malt liquors, 103,330,423 gallons of dis
tilled liquors and 23,425.567 gallons of
wine, giving a total estimated con
sumption for the cersus year of 1,322,
358.094 gallons.

Big Shoot at Raleigh.

of the big trap shooting tournament of
the interstate association at the Kal
eign Gun club. Preliminary events
were shot off today, some excellent

Retires After 37 Years.

Fanny Jackson Coppin, who has been
the principal of the Institute for Col
ored Youth ior the past thirty-seven
years, severed her connection with the
institution today at the close of the
school year. Mrs. Coppin is the most
widely known woman educator of her
race. In October she will accompany
her husband. Bishop L. J. Coppin. to
South Africa, and will assist him in
the development of Bethel college,
which be has founded at Cape Town.
