When you try on a pair of shoes look for two things comfort and style. You must have them
both! Either one by itself is not enough. It is easy to make a comfortable shoe; it is easy to
make a stylish shoe. But it is very difficult to combine the two. To make a styiisn snoe tna n
is comfortable is the highest art. The one shoe
that fits where all others fail is "Queen Quality."
"Queen Quality" Originates Its Own Styles
Then they are copied by other makers. If you
want to be ahead on the fashion wear "Queen

Portland, Ore., Aug. 3. One of the
marvels of the a.ne is a copy of Ra
phael's i reat picture, "The Slstine

work. This remarkable picture hangs
in a little room in the noithwest cor
ner of the foreign exhibits building
at the Lewis and Clark exposition.
Viewing it at a distance no one is
prepared to say that the work is not
a painting; Jn fact, the statement that
it Is needlework Is often disputed un
til the witness has approached and
felt' the texture for blmself.
The work is by Frauleln Clara Rlp
berger of Dresden, Germany, and oc
cupied seven years. Marvelous above
aH else, she executed it from memory,
having studied the painting . before
she began, and yet she has preserved
all of Its wonderful qualities, even to
the shading of the finger nails. Peo
ecoffed when It was announced that
a German girl has done the Sistlne
Madonno in needlework, but when
artists came to look they were
amazed. The spell of the original was
there the magnificent coloring, the
expressions of the faces, the plac
tioity of the draperies and the haze
of the cherubic glory. Not a brush

in stitches of various lengths, had
wrought the marvel.
A close inspection discovers an in
genuity of stitches unlike anything
ever before exhibited in the way of
embroidery. They are long, and
answer to the contour of each indi
vidual part. For Instance, In the arm
near the shoulder of the child Christ,
the stitches curve to the lieautifully
rounded flesh. In the same way. in
the folds of the draperies, the line of
stitches follow the curves.
Frauleln Ripberger had everything

Raphael's picture on a canvas the full

The Sistine Madonna, fiom the time

DR. OSUNA PURCHASES
HANDSOME NEW AUTO
DID NOT OVERSTEP AUTHORITY
Chief of Police Thomas McMillln
denies the charges made today in tbe
Morning Journal, In which that paper
seeks to hold the members of tbe po
lice department responsible for the
death of Georgia Zimmerman, the
young woman who was found dead
Tuesday morning In her room in the
Oarcia block.
Chief McMillln was interviewed by
reporter to;- The Evening Citizen
today, and bfMore "making any state
ment, the officer said that he wanted
It distinctly understood that he was
placed in an embarrassing position re
garding the matter, inasmuch as
the girl was dead and could not talk.
However, I believe that I owe it to
the public, to myself and to the mem
bers of the police force, to make a
statement. 'With this view in mind,
and with no desire on my part to cast
any undue reflection on the dead girl,
I will give the public some of the
tacts, as follows:
"The statement mado that the girl
complained to certain parties that
she had been hounded persistently by
the police ever since she arrived in
the city, is not supported by facts. I
know that no member of the police
department in any way molested the
Zimmerman glu, until after she had
been In the city five weeks, or there
aiiouts. "At that time it was reported to me
that the girl in quesUon had visited
a house of prostltutlo" on several oc
casions, and the officers acted as had
been their custom in such cases, and
In accordance with the city ordinance
covering such misdemeanors as
street walking, frequenting houses of
prostitution, vagrancy, etc.
"So far as the alleged statement of
the girl, to the effect that while driv
ing through the streets in a cab on
Sunday night with her cousin, O. E.
Hancock, that the cab was followed
liy an officer, and when It stopped the
officer demanded that she pay a fine of
$10 on the charge of being a prosti
tute, and an additional $5 costs for the
trip after the money, la not true.
"The correct sto. y of the occurrence
is as follows: On Sunday night an
officer saw the girl leaving a bouse
of prostitution. He acted as the or
dinance provides in such a case, end
approaching the hack, placed the
woman under arrest. The $15 was
not paid by the woman as a fine, but
was put up by her companion, al
leging to be Q. E. Hancock, as a bond
a bond for ber appearance in police
court on Monday morning. She fail
ed to appear, and In consequence, the
bond was forfeited. Itlgtit here, it
might be well for me to say that so
far as I know or any one else knows,
this man Hancock, alleged to have
been her cousin, was not related to
her at all. "
"It has been a notorious fact that
the girl was a street walker, and bad
made remarks to men on the street
that were entirely unbecoming a laoy
and also uncalled for. The charge
made tbat the police are in tbe habit
of visiting respectable rooming
houses in the city and making in
quiries as to the character of certain
persons rooming therein, is absolutely
false. Those places that4he police
visit are rooming bouses tbat have sa
loons and wine rooms in connection
and the police watch them for the
purpose of preventing minors and
young girls from frequenting them
"It Is a well known fact that when
tbe Zimmerman girl first reached the
city, she put up at one of the leading
hotels, but only remained there a day
or so, as her conduct was such that
the proprietor found It necessary to
ask her to leave, as he feared it would
Injure the reputation of his hotel.
"If the public will but look into the
facts in the case and not lump at con
elusions, I believe they will find that
trie attempt to create a sensation out
of the suicide of Miss Georgia Zim
merman is entirely unsupported oy
facts.
"In conclusion, I wlsb to emphat
lcally deny that the officer over
stepped his authority when he ar
rested the woman, and that the mem
tiers of the police force of this city
are using their authority to hold-up
ani mulct suspected women.
"If tbe city council wants to take
the matter up and investigate the af
fair. I am. perfectly willing for them
to do so, as is every member of the
city police. This Is all I care to say
on the subject.
