Address all communications to , The Daily Journal, Albuquerque. N. M. T city subscribers. Daily, delivered, 25 ents per week THE bill to reorganize the congressional districts in Indiana is so gross an ourrage that ten democratic members of the legis lature voted against enerossing it. If the people ot Chicago yearn for poli ticial reform and the reign of honesty in municipal affairs, let them shew wisdom by electing Robert Lincoln to the Mayor alty. ' Difficulties are accumulating around merry old Kngland until she is aaything but merry. The seriousness of her situation is no longer speculative, it is absolute reality. The republican members ol the Illinois legislature stand by Generai Logan with all the tenacious loyalty ot heroes. The picturesque example of the 306 of iSSo has not been without its uses. The California Legislature had been in lession forty days sixty days is the limit fixed by the constiiution before any leg islation had'been enacted, except a bill tj piy for a horse that fell through a wharf and was killed. There is no gainsaying the fact, and it is a fact, that there is no better field than New Mexico for the investment of money, with a view to early and certain returns. This applies more particularly to stock growing and careful mining investment. Dr. Tal&aCE intimates that the New jersey legislature indulges in toó much whisky' and profanity, and not enough in serious work. Brother Talmage clearly mistakes the mission of the body which he maligns. It is to furnish a frightful example, and ot to set a model. Cleveland is credited with saying: "I think it is wise to retain the friends that came to our support in the last cam paign. It is a ' question in my mind .vhether the solid south can be maintain ed by the democrats, and by inaugurating a liberal and progressive policy, we may be able'to gather many recruits in north ern and western states." ' It costs this country something to en joy the luxury of a national congress as will be seen from the following items taken from the legislative appropriation bill: For compensation of senators, $230,000, and for members of the house, $1,696,000, making over $2,000,000 for salaries alone. The mileage of senators and represen'atives is provided for with $150,000, and the salaries of clerks, mes sengers and others to wait upon the states men require $617,000. The stationary costs . $6o,ooo; the botanic garden gets $11,000, and the library of congress $37, 000. The incidentals and indirect expen ditures cost a few thousand more. KINGSTON. Kingston, Feb. 25, 1885. Editor ournaL. As your readers may be iware Kinsston is named after the Iron iving mine, one of the first locations made n this section, and the best developed, it ist the richest mine in camp. ' So confi dent have the owners been of the value if their property that thev have erected fine smelting works on the edge of town, about a mile from their mine. The own- rs of the outfit are New York parties. Their representatives here are nearly, if not quite, all German. So much so tuat :he miners, in their expressive way, speak I the "uutcu ouini" in xaiKing 01 tnc smelter. ' . Whatever may have been the expecta ions of the company when putting up their works, they have certainly not been realized. Parties who are acquainted A-ith such things pronounce the nelter o be one of the finest in the country. Vet they are not running, and have not been running, more than one-third of the íme since erection. LacK ot nuxing ma terial said to De tne cause. i-eaa nas been hauif d and shipped irom every sur rounding camp, when it "could be obtain- :d, and I see by 1 HE journal mat re is " being shipped from the Jrcon mountains to the Kingston smelter if this is a fact, and a Journal reporter u?ht not to be disputed, it is on . ac count of its fluxing properties, full of ga lena. I suDoose. this camp can prooucc enough ore to run the largest smelter in the country, or two or three of them for that matter, -but the lead is wanting, although the galena ores are ihoutrht ta be abundant lust over tne range, some five or six miles away, but there does not seem to be sumcient enter prise to build a road over there, and let me whisper in your ear, that lack of en terprise may have something , to do with the situation of the smelter.the camp, and such things have happened. It is not my business to criticise, or draw conclusions, but simply to State facts and give you the news. The Bullion and Superior have paid from the beginning. "They have no works ot their own as has the Iron King, be yond their large hoisting works "and other buildings adjoining and necessary to mining proper. They have been ship ping ote to Denver, and I presume other p oiüts, for the past two yean almost con- staatly and deciare their dividends. They are both stock companies and have no mines or stock for sale, although the Iron King are in the same situation as far as I know. As well paying as the above mines have been, and promise to continue te be they bid fair to be eclipsed by some oth ers in the near future. The Lady Frank lin, Black Colt, Caledonia, and some oth ers, are fast coming to the front, and aré all shipping ore and will doubtless be regular shippers. The smelter here buys some ore, but somehow fails to give satis faction to the boys, and the most of the ore goes to Denver for treatment, out of the mountains here, and over plains and mountains, hundreds of miles away. This does not seem to be economy, with Deal ing, Socorro, Albuquerque and Pueblo on the way. I will overhaul this again. Mr A. A. Wise,. of Las Vegas who is interested in some, valuable mines nere, and W. W. Maxwell, an old-timer of this place, talk of opening a real estate office here, which is much needed, if carried on by pushing and enterprising men, which both Wise and Maxwell seem to be. Our paper here, the Sierra County Ad vocate, continues to grow better under the management of W. B. Hardwicke, who formerly typoedin Albuquerque, un der Joe Dixon. But he says this week is going to be his last. The people will not support him neither merchants or min ers, prospectors or politicians. A very distressing accident oecurred about a mile below town on the old Toppy Johnson ranch. Miss Katie Langhlin was very severely hurt by a pistol ball. It was at first thought to be mortal, but I hear the lady is slowly recovering. It is the old story careless handling of a revolver. The weather has been delightful for over a month, but a little squally within the past few days, like March weather, Travel is still on the increase. . Your intelligent compositor must i.ot call the Lady, the Toby Franklin in this letter, and when I try to write $75.000, it makes a difference when he puts it $75 as the price of a mine, especially when they get native silver in said mine; and Daniel Webster is more Common that Daniel Welsh. But lor the poor fellow's soul I shall ever pray, and in the meantime try to make our copy better and . Way-LT. SI MR EAK1M POWDER TO-DAY!
