It is vastly to the credit of the 35th ioo-iaifitivf nssemhlv that though it has .o - - w - not yet passed many laws, every law Ifr nnooad ia Vnfllptlt. SOCOrrO that it has passed, is excellent. Socorro Chieftain A marriage license law is a need of the hour in New Mexico. Let such a measure be introduced in the legisla ture at Santa Fe and let it become a law. Las Vegas Record. Socorro county should constitute a district attorney district by itself. It Is to be hoped that the general assembly will show its recognition of this fact in the proper manner. Socorro Chieftain ReDresentative Vargas of this county has introduced a very good bill in the legislature relating to the appointment and duties of boards of irrigation com missioners. He has also Introduced one not so good, providing for the repeal of the Sunday law relating to the selling of liquor. Man's stomach should have a rest one day in the week, at least El Republicano, Tierra Amarilla. . The following resolution adopted by the Irrigation Commission was today presented by Colonel G. W. Knaebel, secretary of the commission, to the Committee on Irrigation of the Legis lative Council: "That the honorable, the Irrigation Committee of the Council be Informed a. CARTWRIQHT, Sec'y and Treas. MEAT MARKET. Our meats are killed and packed in Denver, Colo. They are shipped to us by express. Slow freight from Kansas City is cheaper, but Is it satisfactory to you? We are now turning out the best bread, pies and cakes that we have ever been able to offer to our customers. A fine loaf of home made Vienna, French, Graham, or whole wheat, only 05 A BIG VARIETY. We carry a big variety of cigars, to bacco, and cigarettes. General Arthur, Dry Climate, Tom Moore, Owl, Cremo, fGeo. W. Chllds, Fontelia, Portuondo, Franklin,' Henry George and other popular brands. CHINA AND GLASSWRE. Call and look over our stock In these lines as well as In granite ware when in need. 100-plece set semi-porcelain, a nice im ported pattern $8.75 : : Santa Fe, N. M. that It Is the tense of this commission that Council Bill No. 8, In Its present form, be not passed, but that In lieu thereof, legislation be had which shall provide for the engineer, to act under the authority of this commission and to be selected by it, for the purpose of eatherine data and Informing this com mission as to facts generally which are necessary to the proper discharge of its functions, under the present laws and all changes of the same; and that no arbitrary control of Irrigation matters be placed in the hands of an engineer, such as is, in several respects contem nlated bv Council Bill No. 3, shall be vested in a territorial engineer, if that position should be created as contem plated in said bill." , The Chieftain still insists that a law requiring county treasurers to deposit nnhlic funds in a reputable bank or banks that would pay a reasonable rate of interest would posses great merit. Socorro Chieftain. Senator J. S. Duncan presumably knows where he is "at" on the Normal University matter. It is understood that he has received b telegram or two from Las Vegas, with no pledge of se crecy attached to them, either. Las Vegas Record. t The reappointment of Superintendent H. O. Bursum of the Territorial Peni tentiary, by Governor Otero, and his unanimous confirmation by the legisla tive council, is a high and deserved compliment to that official. He has been judged by what he has accom plished in the most arduous position that he fills. Las Vegas Record. Frank Chavez was fortunate in being elected reading clerk of the Council. Not only Is the salary of $6 per day a good thing, but it is a stepping stone to something even better. He is one of the best educated men in the territory and should command a good position anywhere at any time. El Republicano, Tierra Amarilla. Councilman Thomas Hughes states unequivocally that the Republicans and citizens generally of the City of Al buquerque are strongly in favor of the creation of the new county of Sandoval and that a strong delegation of influen tial Republicans of the Duke City will be here this week to work for Berna llllo county division. He says that such county division bill Is sure to pass the legislative council. Council Bill No. 8 requires that dls trict clerks, sheriffs, and county collec tors should give a bond signed by a surety company. This bill should pass. It should be amended, however, by striking out the sections requiring the territory and the respective counties to pay the premium on the bonds. The tax-payers of Socorro county are just now feeling very keenly the need of such a law. The public schools of the county are now being closed and there Is a prospect that there will be no court in the county for some time, all be cause of a misappropriation of public funds by a county treasurer and collec tor. There is absolutely no reason why a public officer should not pay for a satisfactory bond. If any aspirant to public office does not wish to do this, let him suppress his aspiration. There will be no lack of candidates. Gentle men of the 35th legislative assembly, you will miss an opportunity to enact some excellent legislation If you fall to pass this bill. Socorro Chieftain.
