HAVE HAD GOOD EFFECT.
Items Appearing 1n the New Mexican
Urging Cleanliness of City, Have
Borne Fruit In Socorro.
The items appearing from time to
time In the New Mexican urging the
people of Santa Fe to clean up the
streets and alleys, beautify the city
and construct good sidewalks have had
one good influence. A citizen of So
corro writes that they, have caused the
people of that town to organize a
City Improvement Association. The
purposes of this organization are to
assist In Improving the conditions of
cleanliness and beauty in Socorro, and
to secure the general adoption of
such measures as will be calculated to
promote the physical, moral and mate
rial well-being of the people. The fol
lowing officers have been chosen by
the association: President, Mrs. C. T.
Brown; vice president, John T. Grif
fiths; secretary, Mrs. W. E. Martin;
treasurer, Edward M. Price.
8TRINGENT MEASURES IN
REGARD TO MANGE.
At its meetings in Las Vegas on last
Thursday the Cattle Sanitary Board
appointed its president, C. G. Austl.i,
to supervise the work of enforcing the
laws passed by the last legislature to
compel the dipping of mangy stock.
Wherever owners of diseased -stock
decline to dip after receiving notice
the stock will be seized and the dip
ping done at the owners' expense. The
mange is becoming more prevalent, es
pecially in the southeast, and the most
vigorous measures will be persisted in
until there is none in the Territory.
The board received definite reports of
very heavy stock losses in northern
New Mexico, but in every other sec
tion conditions were never better.
ACT OF VANDALS AT LAS VEGAS.
The safe in the office of the wool
scouring plant of Ross & Browne at
Las Vegas was opened by would-be
burglars Thursday night but nothing
of value was found. Apparently an
gered at their failure to obtain any
loot the persons concerned vented
their spite by committing various acts
of vandalism about the plant. They
emptied a S-gallon can of black oil on
the floor of the office, scattered sta
tionery about the room, broke win
dows and smashed pulleys. Altogeth
er about $300 worth of damage was
done.
SECRETARY OF INTERIOR
IN FAVOR OF RESERVOIR.
A telegram was received at Las Ve
gas Thursday from H. W. Kelly and
F. H. Pierce, who are in Washington,
In the Interest of the Las Vegas reser
voir project, stating that Secretary E.
A. Hitchcock has promised them that
be would push that project; that he Is
greatly interested In it and that it
would receive his heartiest support.
"As a Little Babe." ,
The man who had traveled had fin
ished telling his hearers of the terriflo
physique of the natives of South
American republics. He described
them as big, massive men, with
brawny arms and scraggy muscles. In
fact, his speech gave the idea that
they were the biggest men to be en
countered anywhere on earth or else
where. "Why," said the man who had mere
ly stayed at home and read the pa
pers, "I thought they were very baby
ish." "What gave you that Impression?"
a'sked the man who had traveled.
"Surely nothing has ever been print
ed about them. .They are certainly
giants. What made you think they
were babies f
"I had read," said the other, "that
they are nearly always np In arms."
