These Celebrated . Hot Springs are
located in the midst of the Ancient
Cliff Dwellers, twenty-five miles west
of Taos, and fifty miles north of Santa
Fe, and about twelve miles from Bar
anca Station, on the Denver & Rio
Grande Railway, from which point a
dally line of stages runs to the springs.
The temperature of these waters is
from 90 to 122 degrees. The gases are
carbonic. Altitude, 6,000 feet. Climate
very dry and delightful the -year
round. There is now a commodious
kotel for the convenience of invalids,
and tourists. People suffering with

tagious diseases, are not accepted.
These waters contain 1,686.24 grains
of alkaline salts to the gallon, being

to Be Determined Prospects Are
v Very Encouraging.
MoKinley County has entered the
race for oil honors. During the past
two weeks three companies have
been formed to prospect for oil In the
vicinity of Gallup. A number of ex
perts who have visited the Gallup
field are impressed with the geolog
ical formations of the district, which,
they seem t think, warrant a thor
ough prospecting for oil.
The Gallup. Oil and Land Company
and the Crescent Oil and Land Com
pany are the two companies lately
formed to exploit the district. The of
ficers of the Gallup Company are John
Bowie, president;. Peter Kitchen, vice
president; F. P. Kendrick, general
manager; W. H. Morris, treasurer; L.
E. Gould, secretary. Enough money
has been subscribed by the members
to complete the organization, make
necessary surveys and carry on other
necessary expense.
Indications of oil have, been found
in Reeves, Brewster, Pecos and El
Paso Counties, In Texas, and in the
Pecos Valley of New Mexico.
Sufficient work has not been done
to determine the extent or the value
of the oil fields, but the recent forma
tion of a number of companies Indi
cates that the future of the New
Mexico oil fields will soon be determined.

thusiastic mass meeting held here
Texico business men and citizens de
cided to at once organize a company
to build a road from Texico to Tu-
cumcarl, a distance of about 80 miles
A committee consisting of Messrs. J
M. Hamlin, J. M. Kindred, S. F. Wood
ing and Mart Roberson was appointed
to confer with Tucumcari people
with a view of gaining their co-op
eration. Such a railroad line would
connect the Santa Fe at Texico and
the Rock Island at Tucumcari, and
afford an outlet for the Dawson coal
fields to Texico and eastern New
Mexico and southwestern Texas. A
fine agricultural country will be trav
ersed and four townsites will be lo
cated. The land on the route is all
good and recently surveyed.
The only apparent difficulty to be
surmounted will be the scaling of a
hundred foot drop known as Cape
Rock, which is about midwaybetween
the two points and even that may bo
avoided by making a slightly circuit
tous route thereabouts. There is no
doubt as to the commercial value of
such a road.
Already between $50,000 and $75,000
have been pledged by local parties for
the new road.

ON SOUTHERN PACIFIC SYSTEM

Installing telegraphones over its lines
in New Mexico and Arizona for the
convenience of the service and gen
eral business. With one of these in
struments a superintendent can talk
with any station or section point from
the train to the office or from his mo

throw a temporary wire over the tele
sraph wire and attach a ground wire

anywhere aloiur the line, each havinc

GUARDSMAN ATTEMPTS v
TO MURDER COOK
Las Vegas, N. M., July 26. A trag
edy was narrowly averted at the Na
tional Guard camp grounds here yes
terday, where the Territorial militia
men are In annual encampment when
T. F. Cox, a member of the Silver City
Company ran amuck with a bayonet
and made an unsuccessful attempt on
the life of one of the camp cooks. Cox,
who it is alleged was intoxicated,
lunged at the defenseless cook with a
bayonet and but for the prompt action
of several of his comrades, would have
committed murder. After a hard
struggle he was overpowered and
brought to this city and placed in jail.
He will be returned to Silver City Sat
urday, where he will be court-martialed.

RETURNING TO UNITED STATES
Phoenix, Ariz.,' July. 26 Colonel
Alexander O. Brodle and Mrs. Brodie
will arrive in San Francisco this week
from Manila, they having sailed from
Manila on June 14. Colonel Brodie
will go. direct to the headquarters of
the Dakotas at Fort Snelllng, Minne
sota. He has been In the Philippines
two years and the last three months
of his service was spent in China and
Japan on a tour in which he was ac
companied by Mrs. .Brodie. Their
many Arizona friends will be glad that
they are back in the United States.
