The Saturday Afternoon Whist Club was entertained this afternoon by Mrs. Frank W. Shearon at the Hnearon home on Chapelle street. Mrs. M. A. Otero who has been guest at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City for the past two weeks, Is expected to return home soon. Hon. Charles A. Spiess of Las Vegas general counsel for the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain and Pacific railroad and a leading attorney of New Mexico looked after legal business today in tho Capital. Chief Justice William J. Mills of the Territorial Supreme Court, who has been at Raton, presiding over tho dis trict court of Colfax county for the past two weeks has returned to his home In Las Vegas. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Jones of Las Vegas have gone to S't. Louis for a stay of several weeks' duration. Mr, Jones Is a Las Vegas attorney and chairman of the Democratic Territor ial Central committee. Miss Bertha Copeland of Boston, arrived In Santa Fe yesterday and has taken apartments at St. Vin cent's Sanitarium. She has been here previously and is planning to remain during the coming winter. Colonel George W. Prichard.who has been at Lincoln on business before the special term of the district court for Lincoln county there, which has been in session for the past week. Is ex pected to return home tomorrow. Mrs. C. A. Dalies of Willard, widow of the late Carl A. Dalies, was in the Duke City during the week on a visit to friends and seeing tho fair. Mrs. Dalies Is a fre quent visitor to Santa Fe and Is a favorite in social circles in this city. Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Woodruff en tertained a few friends at a dinner party Thursday evening at their home on Don uaspar avenue. Covers were laid for six. The guests were Misses Anna Chavannes, Elizabeth Tschir hart, Florence Hecker and Stella Canny. Hon. William E. Martin, of Socorro, clerk of the Third judicial district court, and a very competent official, is in Las Cruces attending the ses sions of the U. S. court for the district and for Dona Ana county, in his of ficial capacity. Court will last two weeks longer. Mr. and Mrs. Howell Earnest of Clayton were guests today at the Pal ace hotel. They are en route home from the fair in the Duke City. They found their visit to Santa Fe very pleasant. Mr. Earnest is an Insurance and real estate agent in the county seat of Union county. ' H. H. Major, the efficient probate clerk of Otero county, spent the past week in Lincoln acting as deputy district court clerk for Charles P. Downs, who was not strong enough to attend the sessions of the court there, having just recovced from a severe attack of typhoid fever. J. B. Mayo of Albuquerque has gone East on business connected with his mining properties In south Santa Fe county. He will visit New York and Boston before returning. Mr. and Mrs. Mayo were residents of Golden for a number of years and have a num ber of friends in this city. Mrs. F. C. Wilson, wife of Clerk Wil son of the First judicial district court, and their two children, are expected to arrive here next week from Wash ington, D. C. They will make their home at St. Vincent's Sanitarium un-' til they can find a suitable residence when they will resume housekeeping. Judge William H. Pope of Roswell, who has been holding court at Porta les, Roosevelt cpunty, has closed the term and returned home. The term was a busy one but little civil business was transacted on account of the scar city of funds. The Chaves county dis trict court will next be held by Judge Pope of Roswell. Judge Pope is one of the hardest working judges in this territory, as the business of his dis trict Is constantly on the increase. Dr. C. N. Dr. Lord has disposed of his dental business in this city and will remove shortly to Schenactady, Now York, where he expects to resume the practice of his profession. Associate Justice Edward A. Mann of the Fifth judicial district, has spent the past vweek In Lincoln holding the district court of Lincoln county. This is to be closed as the docket has been cleared. Judge Mann enjoys the es teem and confidence of the people of his district for the impartial and able manner in which he presides over the court. - Alexander M, Spear who has been for three years past a member of the clerical force at the local U. S. land office will leave during the com ing week for Spokane, Washington, where he will enter upon his duties as a special agent of the general land office under the chief of the field divis ion stationed there. Mr. Spear's trans fer is in the nature of a promotion. Mrs. Spear will accompany him to Spokane and they will make their home there. Cards have been received in this city by friends of Judge and Mrs. Matt G. Reynolds, of St. Louis, Missouri, announcing the marriage of their daughter, Miss Florence, to Lieuten ant George Grunert, of the Eleven United States Cavalry, on October twenty-second, at 8:30 o'clock at the 'amlly residence", No. 5567 Van Versen avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. Judge and Mrs. Reynolds have visited San'ta Fe frequently and are highly esteemed lere. The bride-elect Is a very hand some and accomplished young woman. Judge F. D. Morse, proprietor and editor of the Sun, published at Santa Rosa, will leave during the early part of the coming week for the East, to visit the Jamestown exposition and his old home In New Jersey. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Morse. The Judge was elected a member of the constitutional convention last Novem ber in Guadalupe county and Informs the New Mexican that should the con vention be called together he will im mediately return to attend its sessions. He Is a firm advocate of speedy state hood for New Mexico and believes that a constitutional convention should be held as soon as possible. Ex-Governor L. Bradford Prince was a prominent speaker during the week in the triennial convocation of the bishops and laymen of the Episcopal church at Richmond, Virginia, as a lay delegate from the Church of the Holy Faith in this city.- He does not expect to return, home for a month as he has important business to at tend to In New York City and his old home in Flushing, Long Island. On Monday Mr. Prince led the opposition to a reduction in the size of the con vention which was recommended by the leading committee, and defeated the project by a vote of 4 to i. On Tuesday he made a ringing speech in favor of the word, "America" In the constitution, and again was successful by a large majority. E. J. McLean, of Denver, where he occupies a prominent position in busi ness circles, has been in the city for several days visiting Major and Mrs. R. J. Palen, and also on business. Mr. McLean for many years was a resi dent of this city and was a senior memb'er of the wool dealing Arm of E. J. McLean and company. About twelve years ago he married Miss "Alice Webbe, a sister of Mrs. Palen, and about nine years ago they removed to the Colorado Capital. Mr. and Mrs. McLean were very popular and es teemed while they were residents of Santa Fe arid still have many friends here. Mr. McLean has prospered and Is interested in this city and the Es tancla Valley. He made a flying trip to Estancla and was agreeably im pressed with the progress of the val ley.
