R LAST OF THE PIONEERS OF THE SOUTHWEST. (Continued From Page Three.) soldiering acted as scout and guide until the final taming of the red men brought his chosen calling to a close. He was In charge of "Reno's pack trains through the ill-fated expedition of 1876, and most of his old time com panions sleep with Custer on the banks of the Little Big Horn For fifty years or more the ro mance and adventure of the whole Southwest centered in the Santa Fe Trail. War. . : v . Best known of the surviving scouts on that historic highway are Captala Simpson and Aloys Scheurich, both , resting after the strenuous labors of earlier, years in the somonlent com munity of Taos, in northern New Mexico. Both were friends and com panions of Kit Carson. Both served in the army, and drifted to Taos when that was one of the storm centers of the Southwest. Scheurlch was born in Germany in 1836, came to American when about 16 years of age, reached St. Louis In 1853, and immediately enlisted in the Third United States Infantry. Shortly . thereafter, as sergeant, he set forth with his command on the long march afoot to Fort Union, remaining there until in 1855, when he was sent to Fort Massachusetts, to participate In the Ute and Apache War precipitat ed by the virtual.blotting out by the Indians, of the Colorado settlement of Pueblo. After, the suppression of the Utes and Apaches, he was transferred to Cantonment Burgwln, in Taos county, New Mexico, where he remain ed until mustered out, with the rank of corporal, in 1858. From 1858 to 1868, most of his time was spent on the Santa Fe trail part of the time eb acout, and part of the time as freighter on bis own account. Dur ing this period Kit Carson was Indian " Agent for the Taos Indians, and the friendship between the two men was as close as It was possible for It to be, ' when on of the man was of the taci turn, retiring and somewhat unsocial disposition of Carson. In 18G5 he mar ried Marie Tereslna Bent, daughter of Charles Bent, the first American gov ernor of the territory, who was as sassinated in the Taos insurrection of 1874. Mrs. Scheurlch is, perhaps, the sole living witness of the massacre, in which her father was the most prom inent victim. It Is located hardly a stone's throw from the adobe dwelling In which Governor Bent was killed, and not more than two squares from the old home of Kit Carson. Captain Simpson was born in New York City, In 1833, went to New Mex ico when 29 years of age, and settled In Taos in 1859. He served through the Ute and Apache War, spent a year as Government express rider, went to Mexico and mixed up in 13 revolutions In 12 months, and then re turned to the United States to fight the Apaches. As Captain In the Amer ican Army, he was the main agent in V 1 1 Si 4 r A.. ..... J .5- , 4. -?... I 1 The position of the Indians had been admirable from a defensive standpoint almost inaccessible and well supplied with water, although there was no other water within forty miles. It was plain that this. would aU ways be a retreat and lurking place for the savages, unless something wa' done to keep them away. It is a well known fact that the Apaches will nev er make their camp in a place where any of their number have been hang ed. Being an Army Officer, Simpson could not openly countenance the hanging of prisoners. So he turned them over to Wolsey, and hastened away. Wolsey turned the squaw loose and hanged the bucks to the nearest tree. It was "good business" as the PInals ever after shunned the spot. In 1866 Simpson returned to Taos, where he has remained ever since, excepting for occasional scouting ex peditions as long as there was any demand for services of that kind. One of the mem-, orable Indian fights that Simpson re calls occurred in 1864 on the very ground where the thriving mining camp of Globe now stands. King Wol sey, with about 80 miners and moun taineers, had run Into several times their number of Pinal Indians. Find ing the savages too strong, he sent to Simpson, 160 miles away, for help. Wolsey managed to. stand off the sav ages until Simpson's arrival with the much needed aid. Then the two com bined their forces and went In to win. After a hard fight the Indians were routed, leaving many dead, and two braver and on squaw prisoners. Trinidad, Colo., Dec. 14. Engineers who have been surveying a route from El Paso, Texas, to Trinidad, Colorado, for the El Paso and Southwestern Railway, said to be owned by Phelps- 1 Dodge Company, have completed the 'survey to this place.
