Washington, Jan. 2. A session of al
most unexampled activity is upon the re
publican members of the senate iinance
sub-committee in charge of the substitute
lor the Mills bill. Messrs. Monill, Alli
son, Aldrieh, Sherman an.d Hiseock are
in almost continuous session in the effort
to make it as near satisfactory to all the
interests involved as maybe. This can
be done only by amending in some par
ticulars, and the purpose of the sub-committee
is to decide what amendments
shall bo proposed. It is necessai-y that
the desired amendments be agreed upon
for the entire measure in advance, so that
if there shall be a detailed consideration
of the sections of the bill prior to the date
fixed for the iiual vote upon its passage,
the 21st of January, if possible, the com
mittee may have its changes ready to be
proposed in the bill and disposed of the
same way.

Ministers Object.
Indianapolis, Jan. 1. At a meeting of
local Methodist ministers last night, the
interesting fact becamo public that the
crusade against the inaugural ball at
Washington was started by certain clergy
men at Columbus, Ohio, who formulated
their views in opposition to the ball and
forwarded them to the Methodist clergy
in this city for action. Rev. Kcenc pre
sented a petition of the Columbus clergy
men which in substance asks Gen. Har
rison to i enounce publicly his approval of
the inaugural ball and docl tit he w ill not
attend it. In commenting upon this cleri
cal suggestion, Dr, Keeno said: Some
action of the clergy of Indianapolis was
now looked for and their opinion regard
ing the action of the Columbus clergy
ought to le definitely and unmistably ex
pressed. He was earnestly opposed to
dancing and was in favor of indorsing the
action of the Columbus clergy. A discus
sion of the subject followed in which sev
eral ministers gave their approval of Dr.
Koono's views, and a motion was iinally
carried unanimously that a committee of
threo be appointed to investigate and con
sider the advisability of tendering counsel
to the president-elect, regarding ttye mat
ter of the inaugural ball, and report their
i determination at tnc next regular meeting,
j Private Secretary Halforddid not attend
'the meeting. He'is strongly opposed to
any interference on the part of the clergy
wiili social customs that have almost be-
come laws ami there is but little doubt
I that he reflects the viewsof both Gen. and
I Mrs. 1 Iarrison.

The clear and perfect atmosphere of
this altitude gave the sky gazers in Santa
Fe an excellent opportunity for observing
the s-ju's eclipse yesterday. The path of
totality struck the west coast of California
some miles north of San Froneiwn, and
traveled in a northcastlerly direction
across north central California, northern
Nevada, southeastern Idaho, northwest
ern Wyoming, the National park, south
eastern Montana, northwestern Dakota
and Manitoba. The path was about
ninety-six miles wide in California and
gradually became narrower to tho east
ward. On either side of this narrow strip were
w ider ones where tho eclipse was partial.
In Santa Fe about ono tenth of the sun's

their smoked glasses about 2 o'clock, at
which hour the moon began to gradually
eat away apparently the sun's right hand
side, or to be more exact, at o point about
116 degrees to the right of tiie sun's vortex.
The greatest obscuration was at a little
after 3 o'clock w Ijpn the sun appeared as
a crescent, lying on its back, the points
pointing upward. The moon passed of
about 3 o'clock, when the eclipse ended.
