Chadron, Neb., June 15 Deputy United States Marshal Robinson has nr rested five Indians charged with abduct ing a 14-year old girl on ber way from the mission sohool and keeping her in the brash all night. The Indian police jus tice, recognized by the interior depart ment, fined them one horse a piece. This did not satisfy Robinson and he at onoe arrested them all and will endeavor to have them puaiBhed. Fell From a Tower. Austin, Texas, June 15. Criohfield and the heiress to con siderable property, has been missing since Wednesday afternoon, tears are being entertained that she is being held for a ransom or to secure some of her property. The Fire Fiend. Wheeling, W. Va., June 15. The most disastrous fire in the history of Bridgeport, Ohio, broke out in the Ogle- bay this morning. The town being with out fire aparatns was compelled to call on the Wheeling fire department. The entire block was gutted; loss, $80,000; insurance, $10,000. Mexican Capital City of Mexico, June 15. Minister of Finance Limentour denies that tie has subsidized any newspapers. M. Lechinger, who sued the Mexican National railway for $15,000 damages, won his suit. Weekly Hank stutement. New York, June 15. The weekly bank statement is as follows: Decrease, $1, 709,000; loans, inorease, $1,107,000; spe cie, deorease, $1,511,500; legal tender, in crease, $8,510,300; deposits, inorease, $2, 819,800; circulation, inorease, $13,000. The banks now hold $37,958,900 in-excess of the legal requirements. British Marines Landed. Hong Kong, June 15. It is stated that the black flags are threatening to cause serious trouble in Formosa, and the foreigners on the island are in a oritical condition. In view of these facts, the commander of the British cruiser Spartan has landed a detachment of marines, and the British cruiser Rainbow has left here for the scene of the trouble. Excitement prevails over the three counties of Vic toria, Dewitt and Jackson on aoooant of the presence of supposed members of the Dalton gang, who have been committing depredations on the borders of these oounties for several weeks. Three sheriffs with posses are now bunting them down. One of Sheriff Steel's posse, from Dewitt pounty, has been shot by the outlaws. The report that the synod of the Re form churoh had condemned bioyole rid ing is officially denied. Fire broke out at 9:80 this morning in the European hotel, adjoining Willard's, Washington, D. 0. Many of the guests narrowly escaped. Damage was light. Six passenger coaches on the Inter Ooean railway, near Jumps, Mexico, were derailed, and three passengers killed and sixteen wounded. Stanley, who spent several years in the Orient, says he is not surprised at the re ports of an uprising in China against the missionaries. The Chinese he says regard the Europeans sod Americans as the in stigators of the Japanese war, and there fore hold them to be largely responsible for the degradation of the Chinese as a nation. He prediots an era of railroad and tele graph building with the growth of out side commercial relations, as the result of the Japanese treaty, and says that as the United States is more popular in both China and Japan than any European na tion there is every reason this eonntry should reap a rich commercial harvest out of the situation. No one was killed, but a number were injured, as follows: Michael Devoes, cut over right eye, injured internally; John De voes, right ankle sprained; Frank White, right knee cap broken; Henry Wylet, brakeman, right wrist broken and right hip sprained; Henry Hundorp, chest in jured; Jaoob Quint, 70 years old, right foot broken; L. Bokmon, conductor, left wrist and right arm sprained and bruised. The railway men were at work with a pile driver, whioh stood on the bridge, aud the other people were watohing. A Biie Verdict. Duluth, Minn., June 15. A verdict has been returned by the jury in the case of Alfred Merritt against John D. Rocke feller, the jnry assessing Merritt's dam ages at $930,000. The notion was brought in the United States court to reoover $1, 250,000 as damages caused to plaintiff by reason of alleged fraudulent representa tions made by Mr. Rockefeller and his agents at the time when the Merritt prop erties on the Mesaba range were included in the Lake Superior consolidated mines, now controlled by Mr. Rockefeller. The central west leads in the advances. The boom feeling prevailing there seems justified there by the practical absence of a reserve in furnace plant of steel works. The rise in steel and the difficulty in getting the plate bars is making the do mestic manufacturers of tin nervous over the danger of being forced to surrender a part of their market to foreign makers. Warner, are on a visit to Albuquerque. Hon, T. B. Cntron has been elected by the university alumni to deliver their ad dress next year at the University of Mis souri at Colombia. From Memphis Gov, Prince will pro ceed to the Republican league convention at Cleveland, and thence for a short busi ness trip to New York. Mr. J. H. Prof. Cockerell, entomologist at the Agricultural college, accompanied by his Bister, will shortly arrive from Las Cra ces to speud the summer here, taking quarters at Mr. Boyle's home. Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf, of Philadel phia, is to deliver his famous lecture, ''Only a Jew, at the court house on July 2. He has been speaking at Denver, Salt Lake and other western cities of late and the press f peaks of him in the highest praise. Archbishop P. L. Chapelle accompanied by Rev. Father Gloid, of Washington, D. C, is on a visit to the parishes in the Jemez and Pueroo region and will be ab sent for some ten days yet. His grace, Arohbishop J. B. Salpointe returned yes terday from San Juan. His health is muoh improved of late. To-morrow, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the annual (lower service will be held at the penitentiary under the aus pices of the W. C. T. U. All are cordially invited to attend. La Tertulia Idioroatioa had its regular weekly meeting with Miss Emma Wedeles last Saturday afternoon with a full mem bership present. After roll call, which was responded to with exceptionally bright quotations and dichos viejos, a revised and carefully written constitution was presented by a committee composed of Miss Mauderfleld, Mrs. Curran and Miss Fleming, read and adopted. A short story within the tale entitled "La Estrella de Vandalia," was read by Miss Mander field) and an amusing incident, "La Bon dad de bus Vecioos," by Miss Fleming. The usual refreshments were daintily served by the hostess. On Thursday, June 20, the junior and senior sooieties of Christian Endeavor will hold a "Boston '95" birthday social in the Lamy building, at which an inter esting program will be presented and au abundance of pleasing refreshments served. This is the first of a series of entertainments these societies hope to give every three months to bring the work of the Young People's "Society of Christian Endeavor before the people of Santa Fe in such a manner that all may see "the good of it." Invitations will be mailed on Monday next, and no one will be admitted who can not present the "Boston '96" offloial seal at the door. The Santa Clara Indians who live near Espanola celebrated Corpus Christi.on Thursday with whnt in known ns a con tinuous race between tho married and single bucks. They divided off an equal number on each Bide and ran alternatively abont 500 feet. The married men made the shortest score and won the race. T. Sub Dozen, the Indian school teacher, kept the tally. He made the original translations on which the Re avis claim is based, and the testimony rather tends to show that he was pretty well acquainted with the bogus methods devised to bring forward this claim.
