No surprise was manifested at the state department over the repotted seizure by the Rush of the Salvanna, the Canadian sealer. The faot that there is a sealing fleet in the pro hibited waters and that the officers of the revenue outters have been instrnoted to prevent illegal sealing indicate, the offi cials say, that many seizures are likely to occur before the seas" 'is over. The monthly statement of the comp troller shows the amount of the national bank notes outstanding on Jane 30, 189S, to have been $211,600,698, which is an in crease for the year of $11,811,391, the in crease for June being $212,669; the amount of circulation outstanding, based on United States bonds, was $186,062, 098, an increase for the year of $5,198, 514, and for month of $16,092,521; the amount of lawful money on deposit to seoure circulation was $26,690,723, which is a doorcase since Jane 30, 1891, of $1,152,183; the amount of United States registered bonds on deposit to secure circulation was $207,680,800, of which $10,165,500 was in 1 per cents of 1895; the amount of deposits to secare public deposits was $15,278,000, of which, $375, 000 was in the new 1 per cunts. Mrs. Buchanan, wife of the condemned mur derer, made an unsuccessful effort to in duce Gov. Morton to commute her hus band's sentence to life imprisonment at 6 o'clook this morning. The woman sank on her knees before the governor in pleading for her husband's life, though grief almost prevented her spunking. Gov. Morton was plainly overcome. Tears stood in his eyes as he lifted her to her feet and told her he could not grant her reqnest. DK8PEBATE EFFORTS TO SAVE BUCHANAN. Sing Sing. The following dispatch was reoeived from New York: "To Warden Sage, Sing Sing, N. Y.: The opinion of the attorney general is mis leading and misstates the facts as to the appeal. Buchanan is in the supreme court of the United States and by United States lawd your authority is Btayed. You must ohoose between yonr supposed duty to the state and obedience to the supreme laws of your oonntry. (Signed) Arthur C. Butts, George W. Gibbous." Mrs. Buohanan arrived on a train reaching here at 10:30 and was taken to the residence of the pastor of the Pres byterian church. Warden Sage sent her word that she could not see the prisoner. ACll:Ulthe witnesses were oalled to the execution chamber. Electrician Davis was at the switch board. When the party was seated the electrician put a bank of incandescent lights on the chair and sent a current through them. There were 1,710 volts in the bank. PBONOUN0ED DEAD IN THIRTY SECONDS. When the current was switched off the warden and two guards appeared at . the door with Dr. Buchanan. He walked in without a word and took his seat. In about thirty seconds he was strapped and in forty seconds pronounced dead. The voltage of 1,710 was kept on four seconds, then reduced to forty volts, which was kept on thirty seconds more. Insurgents March on Havana. Key West, Fla., July 1. A gentleman who oame from Havana on the steamer MascoUe reports t$ftt Gomez is marching on Havana at tho head of 8,000 armed troops. Gomez says that in a short time he will water his horses in the Rio del Almendares and command the capital of the island. Gomez surprised a garrison of 1,500 Spanish at Alta Garoia and after a severe battle routed them and burned the town. The Cumberland accommodation on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad ran into an open switoh at Laughlin station, near here, abont mid night, and collided with a switch engine. Harvey Louther, a brakeman, was in stantly killed. Fireman MoBeth, of the accommodation, was seriously injured. A number of passengers were brniBed and ont by broken glass. Increasing Wages. Atlanta, Ga., July 1. Gov. Atkinson, who was so near death last week that his physicians abandoned all hope, is on the maroh toward recovery. Hitchcock Against Santa Fe Electric Light & Gas Company Argued and Taken Under Advisement Over $5,000 Involved, Argument in the case of Charles C. Hitchcock against the Santa Fe Electric Light & Gas company and the Illinois Trust & Savings bank, of Chicago, was completed before Jndge Laughlin in chambers, on Saturday evening, and the caso taken under advisement. It appears that Mr. Hitchoock loaned the original Santa Fe Electric Light company $5,000 and took a mort gage on the property and franchises of the company as security therefor. Sub sequently, it is represented, the original company closed down its works on Water street, abandoned the field to the Santa Fe Electric Light fc Gas company, and the latter company erected and began the operation of a new power plant in connection with the water works, thus depriving the mortgagor company of the power of paying the principal and interest of the mortgage and rendering the idle plant on Water street comparatively valueless. Mr. Hitchcock petitions for the ap pointment of a receiver and a master and also for a personal judgment to cover whatever part of his claim may not i be made good by the sale of tho mort gaged property. A Bpeoial to the Herald from Buenos Ayres Bays: A re port of the death of ex-President Peiioto, of Brazil, reached Rio de Janeiro on Sat urday night. It has been impossible to get details before this owing to the dis tance from Janeiro to reixoto s home. The ex-president expected to leave his home for Rio do Janeiro, when attacked with the fatal disease, a combination cf beriberi fever and aboess of the liver, He was comatose until death. William Simms, Croker's jockey, was examined to-day by an officer of the Royal society for the pre vention of oruelty to animals, regarding a statement that he had driven a horse to death on Monday'Jnne 17, in an attempt to drive from Neir Marltl4- Cambridge and back, twentyfive miles, within an hour. Simms said ha drove the horse from Cambridge to the place where it died, bnt no faster than a walk. Mr. Croker had left the horse nt Cambridge to be shod and was not aware that Simms had driven the horse until after the animal's death. Albuquerque Citizen: Mrs. Jennie F. Doty oommitted Buicide at San Marcial with a 45-calibre Colts' on account of ill health. One new store, aud two new store buildings almost completed. This is what Springer has been doing the last few weeks. Six tons of ore selected from last week's output of the Washington mine, Cochiti distriot, will be shipped and will bring not less than $500 a ton, it is said. Conductor Jones, well known to every traveler on the Santa Fe route, will not recover from the brain trouble with which he has been suffering for some time. Albuquerque Citizen: The daily news papers of this oity, Las Vegas and Santa Fe are systematically advertising the ter ritory, and deserve encouragement from the people. Says the Eddy Current: A branch of a peach tree containing twenty fine, large red peaches, from the Sharpe orchard, in La Huorta, may be seen in the office at the Hagerman. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe rail road company has commenced to adver tise the Fourth National Irrigation con gress to be held in Albuquerque in Sep tember next. Col. and Mrs. M. 8. nart left Las Ve gns yesterday, for California, to spend the month of July, visiting Los Angeles and Stockton, Mrs. Hart having a sister at the latter place. This territory has always been self supporting. The school house at Hagerman was dedicated last Sunday with appropriate exercises. Hagerman now boasts as pretty a school house as there is in the valley, And holds in high esteem I. S. Osborne, whose efforts have secured for it an edifice for school and religious pur poses. The placer grounds around San Laza rus and the Lucky gnlch are being worked by the Mexicans, some forty of them now running their dry washers. They usually bring several ounoea of the yellow dust every Saturday night to Goodman, at San Pedro, where they exchange it for provisions. Oerrillos Rustler: W. H. Toothaker, Judge S. S. King and Dr. Martin returned to Kansas City Wednesday morning. While here these gentlemen made a deal for some valuable mining property near Son Pedro, and will soon return from the east prepared for aotive development work, and if present calculations are car ried out will put a mill on the gronnd. Awaiting the action of the government in establishing a postofilo at the hot springs, Manager J. O. Flank has estab lished a private office in one of the upper rooms of the bath house, with Mrs. Jas. Barker & Co. have daring the past week shipped 82,300 pounds of fruit from the Casad orchard. Also quite a q nantity of apples. Deming Headlight: It is said that the men of New Mexioo have discovered that they have no equal rights with women in the matter of summer attire. Women have arrogated to themselves tho privi lege of wearing shirt waists, and, while men are suffering from the burden of coats, the laaies unblushingly appear in their shirt sleeves. So far, no man has been found brave enough to start a dress reform movement, but there is no doubt that the poor, down-trodden sex ought to be emancipated from the bondage oustom has pot upon them in the shape of floats, Power. The running team of the Albuquerque fire department, wearing brand new white plug hats, shiny linen dnBters and cham pionship badges, arrived in Santa Fe this morning and will at once resume training on the beautiful Washington street track in this city. They brought with them two hose oarta just alike, their uniforms and other para phernalia, and evidently mean business. The following is the personnel of the team: Charles Allison, N. V. Granger, William Woodmansee, Sol. Benjamin, Charles Voorhees, Charles West, William Mason, Frank Wendall, Joseph Iaherwood, Stark Ames, William Hayes, H. S. Knight, Ollie Codington, James Wells, and, last but not least, "Major," the beautiful canine mascot of the team. They are a fine looking lot of young men. Messrs. John Jaoobi, W. J. Haney and William Baird accompanied the boys and others will arrive to-morrow. Kid Gallagher, who will engage in the twenty round glove contest with Jim La Chepell on the evening of July i, also came up from Albuquerque this morning with hi3 trainer. Wherean it is provided by section 3, of chapter 5 of the ordinances of the city of Santa Fe, "that the mnyor may, by pnblio proclamation, give permission to the citi zens of said city to set off and fire squibs, orackera, gunpowder and fireworks, and to fire guns, anvils, and cannons, within such oity, on such dny or days, and in such place or places as ehall be spsoified in such proclamation. tT- Now therefore, I, the undersigned mayor, under and by virtue of the author ity so oonforred upon me, do hereby give permission to the citizens of Santa Fe, to set off and fire squibs, orackers, gun powder and fireworks, and to fire guns, anvils and cannons within the limits of Santa Fe, from July 3rd to July 5th, 1895, but only in suoh places and under suoh circumstance as will not endanger per sons and property, and the marshal and polioe are particularly directed to sup press and prevent the promisonous fire- ing of fireworks, whenever and wherever tho same shall nppoar to endanger per sons and property. The place designated for the display of fireworks by the committee in charge of the celebration on the 4th is hereby fixed at northwest corner oi plaza and south end of Lincoln avenue.
