Letters pertaining to Business snoum ue Hiidresseil New Mixioan Printing Co., Santa Fe, New Mexico. -TheNEW MuxrcAN is the oldest news paper in New Mexico. It is sent to every Pout Office in the Territory and has a large un growing circulation anions; the intern gent and progressive people of the south west. TUESDAY. JULY 23 Quabd the public school fund. The tax-dodger, like the poor, is ever with as. Look after him and make him stand his juat burden of good government. The mining industry in New Mexioo is -feeling the effects of the general bnsinees activity. From every prominent camp comes cheerful news. The recent disoovery of rich plaoor mines at La He! le is certain to give a frenh impulse to earnest development work in that promising district. IIow about that joint meeting of citi zens from Cerrillos, Albuquerque, White Oaks and Santa Fe to confer with Presi dent Jeffrey on the subject of extending the narrow gauge. Invite your long suffering eastern friend to oome and make his home iu New Mexico. The territory is all right now, and it won't be long before state hood will be upon us. The annual revenues of all the coun tries of Europe are in round numbers $2,980,000,000. The expenditures are $3, 200,000,000. How long will it take an annual defioit of $220,000,000 to assert itself? Senator Allison is said to be popular as a second choice for the Republican presidential nomination. When one of the firsts disoovers that he ean not win he will transfer his strength to the sec ond, and thereby acquire some intluenoe in the second's administration. Such is the game of politics. No bane man will scaroely dare acouse the Associated Press of having any kindly leaning toward the free coinage idea. Therefore when the press report admits that Ilorr is getting a drubbing at "Coin" Harvey's hands, it mnst be so. Horr has tried hard to side track the main issue and get up a scene, but Harvey's truths cut him deep. Let the merry war go right on. Doubtless Mrs. Jim Corbett's interest in the coming Corbett-Fitzsimmons mill has deepened since the courts have ordered Jim to pay her $100 a week as alimony. If Jim should happen to gbt knocked out a time or two it might so cripple him financially that he would find it difficult to make ends meet without contributing $5,200 a year as an involun tary partner in the grass widow business. So long as only the lives and property of the hardy white settlers of the Jackson Hole oountry were threatened by the murdorons Bannocks, the people of the eastern Btates looked on with calmn un concern, but when they discovered that a handfnll of eye-glnss wearing Prinoeton Btudents were possibly in danger they in stantly set up a hysterical howl for troops to go to the rescue of these dear boys! It ia amazing what a difference it makes whose ox is gored. Would it not be good policy for the Santa Fe city sohool board to ascertain just where its finances are to oome from before it employs ten teaohers at one fell swoop f That's the business way to look at it. It would be deplorable if, after employing bo many teachers, the disoov ery should be made that there were not in sight funds enough to pay more than five or six teachers and that economy would necessitate retrenchment to the ex tent of doing away with a superintendent. Let's go slow for the time being. In the next congress between twenty- five and thirty newspaper writers and owners will tnke their seats as members. Among the more prominent may be men tioned Senator Hawley, of Connecticut, and "Charlie" Russell, of the same state Representatives Boutelle and Dingley, of Maine; Quigg, of New York; Barthold, of Missouri; Soranton and Mntohler, of Pennsylvania; Perkins, of Iowa, and Sen ator Hansbrough, of North Dakota. Hendrix, of Brooklyn, and Conn, of In dians, each declined a re-election. It is a carious fact that though many of the newspaper men are brilliant writers few of them oan apeak. They are, however, far-sighted and earnest workers, and in the committee rooms and oonferenoes they contribute great intluenoe. KEEP THE CASH AT HOME. Every community in New Mexico should struggle to beoome self-sustaining to far as floor, grain, bay, poultry and dairy products are concerned. This accom plished and the good times now (Joining on will bs followed by still greater pros substance goes out of the territory for such products. Why it is a fact even that many towns in New Mexico do not con sume one-tenth as much New Mexico fruit as they do of the California article. There ought ta be a spirit of fair play, a reciprocity, if you please, among our towns in this respect. One conld buy of the other and thus keep the cash at home and stimulate home production. Give New Mexico products the preference. This is what Texas, Colorado and Cali fornia do, and they find that it pays. PRESS COMMENT. After Tax Hottsm-a. An examination of the acts of the board of connty commissioners while sitting hb a board of equalization on assessments reveals an interesting stato of affairs which will be treated at length in these columns. It is found that owners of large amounts of taxable property as a rnle seonred large reductions on the assessed value of their property, while owners of small amounts of taxable property, as a rule, oosld not get any reductions. In dealing with this matter the Reporter will use only the official records. We expect to prove that the people of this connty are being imposed npon by their county commissioners on the plan of "To him that has more shall be given, but to him that has not it shall be taken away from." Raton Reporter. A Law ami Order Administration. Although there are a number of New Mexioo papers that never lose an op portunity of scoring our governor in his every official act, the fair-minded man (regardless of politics) can only say, that no state or territory has, or ever had, nn executive more ready to look after the difficulties arising in every nook and cor ner of the territory than is Uov. J horn- ton. In several cases, to onr knowledge, he wns there personally, not relying on other officials wholly, but taking the matter in his own hands and making him self a leader at the scene of trouble. Prompt aotion in all difficult cases and fair and unprejudiced dealings with all, an able performance of his official duties, he has made a governor respected by all advocates of law aud order, and a terror to evil-doers. Springer Stockman. A Slew Mexico Orchard. Perhaps nothing in the Rio Grande val ley, and, for that matter, in the territory, is more deserving of mention than the or chard of A. D.Coon,aboutthree-fourths of a mile south of the postoflice in Socorro, and within the city limits. Upon fifty acres of land Mr. Coon has nearly 8,000 frnit trees, 4,000 of which are apple trees, 1,500 of them being "Ben Davis" app'es, and 1,200 of this variety are in one group; 1,500 plum trees, 500 quinces, 100 pear trees, 100 apricots, 100 oherry trees and 150 peach trees. These trees are 6 and 7 years old and in full bearing. They are of the finest selected varie'ies and not a seeding among them. The trees have been grown without irrigation! By thorough cultivation of the soil and being only six to eight feet above water level, they have thrived as no other trees in the valley have. Perfection in tree growth oo-iies nearer being tenlized in this Socorro orchard than in any other place the writer has ever seen, and he has visited some of the finest orchards in California. The trunks and limbs of the trees appear as if varnished. The trees are symmetrical, and not a leaf is of color; all are of the rich dark green which indicates plant life and health. The plum trees are loaded with fruit like clusters of grapes; apples, early and late, weight down the limbs of the trees with all they can bear after many have been picked to relieve them. Cherries and aprioots have been picked, and many early peaches have been Bent paoked for market. Mr. Coon has peaohes ripening from the 20th of June nntil October. He has already marketed over 6,000 pounds at from i cents to 6J cents per pound. He estimates his entire orop of peaches at 50,000 pounds from the 150 trees. His apple orop is expected to yield $2,500 this year, and the yield of his orchard will uot be less than $5,000 for 1S1I5. Albuquerque Citizen. lleiUH of Interest By The M ahnuli Man. Bulletin No. C. The PES VALLEY of ME W -MEXICO I FFERS unequaled advantages to the farmer, friit grower, live stook raiser, dairyman, bee keeper, and to the home-seeker generally. The soil of the Pecos Valley is of high average fertility, and under irrigation produces bountiful crops of most of the grasses, grains, vegetables, berries and fruits of the temperate and some of those of the semi tropioal zone. In such fruit as the peach, pear, plum, grape, prune, aprioot, nectarine, oherry, quince, etc., the Valley will dispute for the pre-eminenoe with California; while oompetent authority pronounces its upper portions in particular the finest apple country in the world. Enormous yields of such forage crops as alfalfa, sorghum aud Egyptian aorn make the feeding of cattle and sheep and the raising and fattening of hogs a very profitable occupation. The cultivation of canaigre a tanning material of great value is beooming an important industry in the Peoos Valley, a home market having been afforded for all that can be raised, at a price yielding a handsome profit. Thti climate of the Peoos Valley has no superior in the United Btates, being pre-eminently healthful and health restoring. Unnds with perpetual watet-rights are for sale at low prices and on easy terms. The water supply of the Pecos Valley has no equal in all the arid region for oonstauoy and reliability; and this with the superb climate, productive soil and the facilities afforded by the railway which extends through the Valley's en tire length, will cause these lands to enjoy a constant, and at times rapid, inorease in value. The recent completion of the Pecos Valley Railway to Roswell will cause the more rapid settlement and development of the upper portions of the Valley, including the rich Feliz seotion. The company has recently purchased many of the older improved farms about Roswell, and has now for sale lands to meet the wants of nil raw lauds, partially improved lands, as well as farms with houses, orchards and fields of alfalfa and othor crops. Iu the vicinity of Roswell several pieces of land have been divided into five and ten acres tracts, suitable for orchards and truck farms in connection with suburban homes. Certain of these tracts arc being plnnted to orohards, and will be cultivated and oared for by the oompany for three yearn at the end of which period they will be handed over to the purchasers.
