new ORLEANS. LA, July 10.—Cotton
was easts rtoday under pressure from
liquidation and selling on private report
of general rains in northwest Texas and
parta of Oklahoma. Thfe tightness of July
proved a sustaining In fluence and there
was someb uying by those who acceptod
the views of private map readers to the
effect that it does not Indicate relief from
heat or drouth for Texas as a whole while
the east is likely to get unneeded showers
over Sunday. The generally accepted view
is that the report of the bureau due Mon
day at 10 a. m.,, New Orleans time, will
show enough improvement in condition and
outlook to upset the market temporarily.
Many, however, hold that this report ta
likely to show the crop at its maximum
and that it will soon start on the down
grade if it has not already done eo.
Liverpool due 17.06 on July, 14.91 on Oc
tober and 16.56 on January by New York.

until now haa been overlooked. The threat
of a wheat shortage In Canada and Its ef- i
feet oia the American markets for this
commodity has been borne vividly to mind
in a series of sensational'price advances In
western centers which market analysts be
lieve augur well for the stock .market.
Much of the current absorption of se
curities, especially among certain of the
rails, has been attributed In financial circles
to the west and the demand for these se
curities, It Is said, appears as yet to ba.ve
been .far from satisfied. Quietly and f-V
several weeka there has come Into the
street a changing sentiment among the
northwestern carriers, notably Northern Pa
cific and Qreat Northern and the cioae
watch kept through field observers on crop
conditions doubtless played Its part in this
shifting opinion.
#hlle speculatlvs attention la riveted
chiefly on the low priced stocks of rail
roads operating in tha middle west. a
significant movement la In progress In the
lowest priced stocks to be found In the
southern rail group. Both the common and
tne pfd stocks of fhs Seaboard Air Line
forged ahead into new high ground for the
year under quiet but persistent buying. Sea
board stocks have been looking up ever
aince the management announced that the
company had made new banking connec
tions laat May. The improvement la said
to be based, however, not on the new bank
ing affitiatlona, but on the change fot; the
better In the company's financial status ns
a result of larger earnings.
More so than heretofore much attention
was paid to the continued cheapness of
money in the call markets and Its bearing
on the speculative markets The fact that
call loans In brokerage names had sho#n a
relatively unimportant expansion during the ,
period in which stock prices advanced had j
koccasioned tha tffeneral belief thatp krtlclpa- J
tlon was almost entirely of n professions/
nature. .

ploying five clerks,, necessary to taka
care of the morning customers and
to fill delivery orders. Instead of de
liverlnfexonde a dgy he started to de
liver twice a day and ‘ Instructed the
telephone clerk to determine whether
the meat was desired during the morn
ing or whether it was Intended for
evening dinner. Morning deliveries
Were greatly reduced and fewer clerks
u*r* able to handle the same volume
of trade, for Instead of having to put
up all the delivery , orders In the
morning, the slash time during the
early part of the afternoon was
utilised.

Low priced rail issues shared to some
extent the buoyancy which carried these
stocks to new high levels, prices of con
vertibles strengthening materially. St. Paql,
Erie. Frleco and Chicago and Eastern Illi
nois Hens led in activity.
Improved prospseta for heavier copper
consumption and Increased purpbsea of
stlvsr, produced by a number of copper
companies, led to accumulation of these
issues. Magma asvsns advanced to 1 %
points.

tions continued, with several Issues display
ing rallying tendencies on more favorable

purchases for coinage purposes by Euro
pean countries, several of the oopper pro
ducing companies turning out ore with a
high altugr content.
Marked Strength wan displayed by a
number of specialties. Including Osneral
Electric, Ants Chalmers, Liggett and My
ers. U. 8. Hodman Machinery, Texas Gulf
Sulphur gnd International Nickel, all at
new high prices for the year. Substantial
gains also were recorded by Congoleum. In
