Ward of Camp Hill, Solon Dixon, Rob
ert M. Roundtree. Samuel O. Benson,
William G. Sellers. The new frater
nity was formally presented by A. C.
Robinson, of LaGrange, Ga„ one of the
originators of the new fraternity.
| President Dowell explained what
I the fraternity contributes to the
building of the college man's charac
ter and what it adds to the life of the
Institution. He welcomed the new or
der into the circles of campus life. Dr.
Ward, of the Southern Industrial Insti
tute, also expressed his gratification
at the foundation of the new frater
nity, pointing out that a number of his
former students are members.
The alms of the new fraternity were
outlined by Mr. Robinson as the "pro
motion of scholarship, student activi
ties and the upholding of the rules
and regulations of the college."
The officers of the fraternity are O.

BOSTON, Nov. G.—A proposal for a
state prohibition enforcement act was
approved in a referendum Tuesday the i
vote being: Yes 454,198; No, 449,951.
This referendum which has been de- j
scribed as the "baby Volstead act" was .
rejected at a previous election.

LOSES AUTO CASE

Act of the legislator* providing an
allowance of »«00 a year for auto
mobile service and expense In -connec
tion with the performance by the
sheriff of Dallas county of his official
duties Was held invalid by the Ala
bama supreme court, in decision ren
dered Thursday in the case of Wat
kins M. Vaughan, judge, etc., vs.
state, ex rel Dawson, appealed from
the Dallas county circuit court.
The act which rfnder the decision of
the court is held void was an act giv
ing to sheriffs of those counties in the
state ranging in population from 58,
401 to .58,501, an allowance of 8(00 a
year for automobile service and ex
pense. In the opinion of the supreme
court, which was written by Justice
Ormond Somerville, it was ruled that
this measure was passed by the legis
lature as a general act, but that it was
in fact a local act applying only to
Dallas county, and Is invalid because
it did not conform to the rule which
requires that local acts shall be ad
vertised.
The case represented action brought
by the sheriff seeking .to require «th«
probate judge to make payment to hint
of a Warrant for a claim on the al
lowance provided by the act In ques
tion. The lower court decided for the
sheriff, but on appeal the supreme
court reversed this judgment, ren
dered judgment declaring the act in
valid, and remanded the case.
