Bettls, tlie well known commercial man, of Seattle, whi is here on his monthly trip, "and there will be many people head ing tliis way early next spring. As a matter of fact there are some leaving Seattle all the time for Southeastern Alaska. "There is much confidence ex pressed In the permanent future of this section and mining men from the interior and other places will come here to investigate for themselves. I always find business good in Ju neau. but we look forward to a big, increase next year. A SKAGWAY PIONEER TALKS OF THE TOWN. E. J. Shaw, a pioneer of Skagway, from its earliest days, is in town, ac companied by Mrs. Shaw. At Tho Empire oillce today Mr. Shaw talked with the proprietor about the early days of the Lynn canal town, where they met for the first time away back in 1897. "Of course our population has de creased largely since the rush rays," Mr. Shaw said, "but we bave a sub stantial town just tho same. The town is prosperous, and we are jog ging along in a comfortable way. Every person Is able to make a liv ing and poverty Is not known. The outlook for the future, I believe is good." Mr. Shaw will remain here until next week, and will return again early in January as a witness in a case to be tried at this term of court. CITY COUNCIL MEETING. The Yukon Is due from the West ward Dec. 9. The Dolphin is due from the South Monday Dec. 9. The Humboldt is due tonight but will probably get in early tomorrow. The Curacoa leaves Seattle Dec. 11 for Juneau. The Northwestern should arrive at 4:30 today from the Westward. The Alkl should reach Seattle to day. FIRE ON GAS BOAT. The tiro department wns called out at ten o'clock this morning in re sponse to an alarm turned in on ac count of a gasoline launch lying on the beach which caught afire front a stove within the cabin. Nowell, of the Alaska Steamship Company, had a wirelss from the Northwestern today via the Spokane stating that the Northwest ern would arrive in Juneau about 4 p. pi.
