SURVIVORS OF THE
WRECKED OAKLAND
The Burvlvors of the wrecked Oak
land, now aboard the Yukon enroute
to Seattle tell a very intersting story
of the disaster from which they were
fortunate enough to escape with their
lives.
The Oakland was formerly under
command of Capt. G. W. Gustuvson,
but he was accidentally drowned while
hunting ducks in a small boat off the
mouth of the AlBeck river two months
ago.
The little boat put to sea with the
former mate, Gub Sutherland, as cap
tain, A. Cleary, chief engineers, B.
Straaton first assistant engineer, I.
Beson, sailor, and Matamata, cook.
The vessel had a cargo of 800 cases of
salmon.
While ofT Dry bay Oct 23, with
a heavy sea running and the wind
driving a thick fall of snow they
struck the bar hard.
Fortunately the tide was just turn
ing ebb at the time or they would
have had no chance as the seas
broke all over the vessel.
When the water had receded some
what they made their way to the can
nery. A'fter a four-day mush they
reaced Yakutat. Here they waited
43 days anxiously waiting for a ship
and for an opportunity to send word
of their safety to friends and rela
tives. ,
COPPER CARGO.
The Mariposa on the present voy
age besides the eighty first class pas
sengers taken on at points to the
Westward, has a cargo of copper ore
consisting of 1,283 tons, valued at [
$295,380. This copper ore Is from the
Kennecott mines and was taken on
at Cordova, and will be delivered to
the Tacoma smelter.
