March 1.?There will bo a dance at the Alaska Star Temper ance hall tonight. BORN'?To Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Blake, a girl, at 7:30 this morning, weighing 11 lbs. Mother and child doing nicely. Odin G. Hewitt has resigned his po sition with the electricians at Tread well and has accepted a position with the Alaska-Gastlneau Mining Co., at Sheep creek. George L. Johnson, was a Juneau visitor today. Wm. Marks, of Treadwell, left on the Princess May for a visit back East. There was a meeting of the ladies of St. Luke's Guild this afternoon at the home of Mrs. Frank Pearce. There will be Holy Communion ser vice in St. Luke's Episcopal church tomorrow morning at 11 a. m. sharp. Sermon by Rev. G. E. Renlson. Every one is cordially welcome. Wednesday evening service each week at 8 p. m., with adress, followed by choir re hearsal. A large crowu or mates uueuuvu the swimming tank and gymnasium yesterday and last night. The regular Saturday night show will be presented at the Tread Club tonight. The duck and ptarmigan season is over today. Fire was started in the boiler room at the sawmill today and the mill will be started up in a few days. Tom Paul, the Slavonian who was finde $50 the other day by Judge Hen son for smashing two doors, last night ran into Joro Samovich, at the "300" mill, and a fight ensued. This morning the two were worse for wear and they will be tried in Juneau to day. The Scotch dance was held last night and all present enjoyed them selves. There will be music at the Tavern Cafe tomorrow between five and seven. l^ist night amid the applause of their rooters the Mexican team downed the store boys in a close bowling match, by a score of 2.183 to 2,120. Almost 300 people were present. C. E. Ben nett furnished an orchestra. The store boys are just five points behind the machine shop team for first place, and it is expected that they will pass them very soon. They also Intend to give a luncheon in honor of Mr. Ben nett in the near future. There will be a meeting of the Doug las Island baseball fans next Monday night at the Treadwell fire hall, at 7:30 o'clock. A full attendance Is re quested. Daly, who died last August at Hot Springs, Alas ka. Mother and son were doing nicely. A communication from Capt. R. L. Turner of the launch Mamie, was crowded out of this issue of The Em pire. Kenneth Osborne, who is attending the Dana Musical Institute, at Warren, Ohio, will spend the summer at Cha taqua, New York. Mary Redman is returning to Sew ard on the Yukon. Mrs. Cirney returned to Juneau on the Yukon last night. Richard Bushell, editor and pro prietor of the Ketchikan Miner is an arrival on last night's Yukon. Ed. C. Russell came home from the South on the Yukon last night. J. R. Heckman, a prominent Ketchi kan business man arrived in Juneau on the Yukon. J. V. Berger and E. C. Ward, well known commercial travelers from the South on the Yukon. Sam Butt is a passenger on the Yu kon enroute to Seward. Anna Hhein is a passenger on the Yukon enroute with a stock of mil liner for Fairbanks. Joe Baxter is aboard the Yukon en route to Valdez. He is taking in 60, 000 feet of lumber and 100 tons of sup plies for Gold creek. Charles Hewitt a conductor of the Alaska Northern is a returning pas senger on the Yukon for Seward. Mr. Hewitt'is returning from a vacation taken at the Fiji Islands. Adolf Straus is aboard the Yukon enroute to Katalla to bring back the body of his brother. P. D. Blodgett, the king of Kodiak, is returning to his baliwack after a pleasant winter on the Outside. G. M. Chambers, A1 Harper, and Chas. Harper, well known mining men of Seward, are returning on the Yu kon. John Meir, the faithful watchman at the federal jail has been laid up for the past two weeks by an attack of rheumatism, but is now recovering. WARNING! RECEPTION AT THE GOVERNOR'S HOUSE Governor and Mrs. Clark will hold a public reception at the Governor's House at 9 o'clock tonight for the mem bers of the First Legislative Assem bly. There promises to be a large attend ance. There seems to be a groundless impression aboard that the reception is for gentlemen alone. The invitation to the public is to ladies us well as j gentlmen. Although the reception is being held ! in the evening for the convenience of every one generally, the affair ise to be as informal as possible and the re quest. is made that evening dress be omitted. QUARTERS FOR HEIDEL BERG LIQUOR CO. The new quarters being created on Front street for the Heidelberg Liquor Company are fast nearing completion. The design and workmanship both show examples of fine art. The front is done in stucco work above the entrance with an ample ves tibule and plate glass front below. Two large Roycroft doors swing in vitingly in. The walls are paneled in abreviated mission style, while the upper parts are dressed in harmonious tones. The whole has a very pleasing effect.
