Alaska Dog's Life Pictured by a Nome Woman In a recent number of the Town Talk, a writer reviews a book written by Mrs. Darling, of Nome, in which the life of a mala mute is pictured in the same manner as a horse's life was portrayed in "Black Beauty." Mrs. Darling is a Sacramento. Cal ifornia. girl and was a schoolmate of Mrs. Nolle Slddons Hall, of Bedrock creek. The review is as follows: No doubt my readers know that it was the dogs of Mrs. Esther Birds all Darling, wife of the Alaskan mer chant. who have won time and again j the All-Alaska Sweeps*tkes, the class ic of the North. They know also that Mrs. Darling belongs to the pioneer Rirdsall family of northern Califor-1 nia, and they may recall reviews of ? her book of verses "Up in Alaska," a volume which contained some very good poetry. But they can hardly be expected to know that Mrs. Darling is a writer of great charm in prose as well as in verse. Even Mrs. Darling's friends may not know how well she' can tell a story, but they will be made i delightfully aware of this when they j road a little illustrated 'book of hers which A. M. Robertson has just pub lished. It is called "Baldy, of Nome, an Immortal of the Trail," and in its modest way it is as good as "Black Beauty." Mrs. Darling has told the story of one of the racing dogs of the Allan and Darling stables with a charm that is irresistible, writing with a deep sympathetic feeling from a homely viewpoint of kindness and humor that Thompson-Seton or Jack London could not excel. "Baldy, of Nome," is one of the best little books by a Californian that we have seen this year or any year. One does not have to be a member of the fancy to appreciate this book. Its appeal is to all who love animals and like to have their ways studied and described sympathetically. Read ing through the seventy-odd pages you come to know Tom, Dick and Harry very well, and Jack McMillan with his reputation for wickedness, and Kid and Mego who kidnaps puppies, Bar ney and Mike, Driest and Irish, Wolf who was killed by the dog whose tail he playfully nibbled at. Dubby who lakes the cat Texas out for a walk every afternoon, the tramp Nomle! who noes to all the balls, fires and fu nerals, and especially Baldy. With Kid Baldy was chosen to lead the team in the great Sweepstakes of four hundred miles, and he led the team to victory, doing four hundred and eighty miles in eighty-two hours lwo minutes and forty-two seconds. He also led the team victory in the Sol omon Derby, of sixty-five miles, be sides saving his driver, "Ocotty" Al lan, from death on the way. How Baldy did this is splendidly told in the . book and forms a real addition to ' the list of well authenticated instances ? of canine sagacity. The Sweepstakes races, "those unique dashes across ; the snow-swept wastes' of Seward pen- ? insula from Bering sea to the Acrtic ! ocean and return," are described with ) great spirit. There are delicious bits ? in the book as where Mrs. Darling ! speaks of cats as "only soft-footed, | purring bundles of deceit, with no 1 standard of Trail Morals." Altogeth- . er this is a good dog book, which j means that it is a mighty good book.' to read. If you know the North you will appreciate it fully; if you don't it will add to your knowledge. Mrs. Darling has produced a little classic. FEMMER & RITTER See this firm for all kinds of dray lilg and hauling. We guarantee sat isfaction and reasonable prices. Coai delivered promptly.
