ALASKA DAILY EMPIRE Published by the EMPIRE PRINTING COMPANY i ?. '.rti .?*.. .???.? ? JOHN W. TROY, Editor and Manager. Telephone No. 3-7-4 Entered as second-class matter November 7, 1912 at the postofflce at Ju neau. Alaska, under the Act of March 3. 1879. ? i' ? SUBSCRIPTION RATES: . . * s' < u Ct7e year, by mail $19-00 Six months, by mall 6.00 Per month, delivered 1.00 THE ALASKA RAILROAD BILL. THE passage of the Alaska railroad bill through the United States Senate foretells the sucpess. of the administration's Alaska policy, and marks the beginning of another epoch in the history of Alaska's development. It is not a wonder that the people of the Territory have been made enthusiasts, for they; know of the potential possibilities of this country, and they know that adequate transportation facilities will make realities out of those possibilities. It is a glorious victory for progressive government. It is a magnificent reward for the splendid team work of the people of the Territory and those out of the Territory who know our people and sympathize with them in the great empire building task in which they are engaged. The persistent labors of the public spirited citizens of the North and the West generally have resulted in the education of a Nation to the conditions that ob tain. here. The building of railroads from the coast into the great heart of Alaska will make available for the use of men and women the wonderful resources of the North. It will make roorp here for thousands on thousands of people who have been "confined, cab ined and cribbed" in the over-crowded centers of the country to expand to the full extent of their capacities. It will extend the glory of American institutions to another section of the con tinent. And it will bring to those who have battled against ad verse conditions for years opportunities that nature has intended should be theirs from the beginning. Alaskans should and doubtless they will never forget the ser vice that has been rendered them by their friends, in office and out. who do not live in the Territory, in this fight for progressive government in the North. These include a splendid galaxy of Western Senators and practically the whole population of Seattle, in particular, and the whole Pacific Coast in general. They in clude, above all, the great man who is our President?a man with an extended vision, ripe judgment and the courage to act. They include the splendidly organized, smoothly working, harmonious and constrictive Democratic majorities in both branches of Con gress. v In announcing its political independence the other day the Fairbanks News-Miner said that "it is too easy to be a Democrat' now." Further, "the Democratic administration is going as straight as a string." Perhaps the News-Miner is, after all, still Democratic. GUARD AGAINST FIRE. THE people of Juneau should take particular care to prevent the outbreak of fire during the continuation of the cold wave that has the city within its grasp. Fires are being kept burning at full blast in practically all of the stoves of the1 city most of the 24 hours, and they all require watching. If every person will make himself a fire warden to care for his own j house, the danger will not be great. Unless that is done a fire could easily get a start that would do great damage. Inflammable , material is very dry, and the wind blows much of the time. , The good guessing on the fate of the Alaska railroad bill t in the Senate by the friends of that measure will cause the peo ple of Alaska to have faith in the guesses that are being made on the result in the House next month. FAIRBANKS' FUTURE ASSURED. THE fact that the Fairbanks district quartz properties have produced more than $1,000,000 in gold from development prosecuted entirely by local men and local capital tends to i prove the contention of those of that section who say that in the course of time the principal industry of the Tanana will be gold quartz mining. The fact that nearly half of this production was the result of last year's work strengthens the position of the quartz enthusiasts of that country. With the value of its quartz properties proved, immense areas of low grade placer grounds, suitable for the use of dredges and other kinds of labor-saving operations, and sufficient agri cultural lands to make a foundation for a great commonwealth,' all that the Tanana valley requires to make prosperity is cheaper and better transportation facilities and the less costly means of production that will follow. This will come with the construc tion of the government railroad, the authorization for which will come with the passage through the House of Representatives next month of the bill that passed the Senate Saturday. Satisfaction with the administration is so general that many of the editorials in most of the newspapers these days read a good deal like Democratic campaign literature. The President says the Alaska railroad bill will pass both branches of Congress and become a law. If we are to judge from the record, the President knows. ALASKA STEAM A ?
