Rev. John Hawksley, rector of the Church of England at Dawson, Is to be appointed Indian Superintendent for Yukon Territory, eiTectivo March 1. Rev. Hawksley has been in Yukon Territory and adjacent territory for more than a quarter century and talks the native tongue. * * * Former Doputy United States Mar shal W. F. Schnabel and Mrs. Schna bel, of WranRoll, hnvo loft that pluco and will locate at Portland, Oregon. In addition to serving as deputy mar shal. Mr. Schnabel has been chief of the Wrangell Are department. ? m m Sergeant Jerrell, of the 30th infan try company that is located at Fort Gibbon at the mouth of the Tnnana river, committed suicide February 11. * * ? Wrangell will build a new dam and have a new municipal water supply. It Is proposed to build the dam 2500 feet farther up on the stream than the present dam and at an increased ele vation of 60 feet. The new reservoir will include nearly ten acres and hold 31,000,000 gallons of water. The dam will be 20 feet high. * * * O. S. Ryereon. representing an Amer ican fox company with a farm In No va Scotia, shipped 13 silver grey and cross foxes from Skagway for the East last week. The foxes were pur chased in tho Canadian interior. ? * ? An Indian was in town a few day3 ago with a rabbit skin which is jet black, save for a little white on the tail. The animal which inhabited the now empty skin was killed by the In dian on the Pelly river in December. ?Whitehorse Star. ? * * George Mowl, a pioneer business man of Skagway. is about to embark in the moving picture business in ad dition to carrying on his merchant tail oring establishment. He has acquired the lease of the building formerly oc cupied by the Skagway Moving Pic ture company. The manager of the latter company last we^ft opened the Nugget theatre at that place. * * * Editor Louis Klopsch, who was con victed of contempt of court at Fair banks by Judge Frederic E. Fuller, for criticising the court for its ruling on matters that are still pending, was sentenced to six months in jail and to pay a fine of $300. The newspaper man's attorneys will appeal. Klopsch is out on ball. ? ? * Twenty feet below the first bedrock on No. 16, below, Cleary creek, a sec ond bedrock was located on which was found pay dirt that will run $4 to the square foot. ? ? * The ice went out of Whitehorse rap ids Feb. 15. Tho rapids did not freeze over this year until after tho first of January, and there was little to go out. Usually the rapids are sol id until about April 1st. ? ? * H. W. Babbit, of Ketchikan, died at that placo Feb. 11. His son. W. H. Babbit, of Fish Egg, was notified qf his father's serious illness, but was unable to reach eKtchikan before the end came. ? * ? Miss Grace Reiner, principal or tne j Skagway public school, and Miss Adele I^alonde, a teacher of the intermediate j grades, have notified the school direc-| tors of Skagway that they will not ac-J cept positions at that place next year. The vacancies will be filled by the ] school board March 15th. * * e L. F. Anderson, of the United States Department of Agriculture and at the Sitka station, who is an expert on small fruits, says conditions in South eastern Alaska are favorable for small fruit farming.
