March 13. -Douglas Isl and Norwegians are preparing a big ci lebration of May 17. the "Norweg ian Fourth of July, to be held iu this city this spring. Committees are at work preparing the program aud lay ing plans for the big event, which is to be a memorable one. especially as the celebration commemorates the one hundredth anniversary of the in dependence of Norway from Denmark. ?+? Misses Elizabeth and Mamie Kiusl made a number of valentines and sent them to be distrib uted among the old pioneers in the home at Sitka, expressing kind wishes Cor the old gentlemen now living there. iV few days ago the girld received au icknowtedgemeut of their kind act, though a letter signed by Representa tive Shoup. who said, among other things: "If you could have seen how pleased these old gentlemen were when they found that two young Alaska ladies had selected them as their Valentines, 1 am sure you would have felt more than repaid. Do you know that many of these men have had daughters of! their own, and lost them? Knowing that, it is easy to realize how tender ly the Pioneers feel toward those who extend to them such courtesies as you have." BOY SCOUT MOVEMENT STARTED IN DOUGLAS DOUGLAS. March 13.?Prof. R. R. Bell has organized a boy scout move ment on the Island and from the talk among the youngsters there will be great doings this spring and sum mer If there are a sufficient number de sirious to be enrolled there will be both a Junior and a Senior organiza tion. There seems to be no end to the Juniors, but if the Seniors wish to organize they should bo present at ? the Congregational Sunday School next Sunday. - + ? DOUG LAS, March 13.?After u ten days' outing at Bear creek. Mike Heik kela. Dave Davidson and Billy Haut ala returned to the city yesterday and are telling their frieuds that they had the time of their lives. They did not get much game, but they put up a tent and spent the days in prospecting and getting near to nature. The boys, piloted out and back by Captain Jack Penglase of the gasboat Anna, say that both the captain and the boat behaved to perfection. j + DOUGLAS NEWS NOTES * + DOUGLAS. March 13?In the Em pire appears the announcement of a dance to be given at the pavilion on Mayflower island tomorrow night, by the Douglas musicians. The dancing floor of the pavilion is well known to be one of the best in the district and there is ample space for a large at tendance. !t Is expected that a most enjoyable time will be had. Report comes today that Mrs. Neu man. who was operated upon yester day. Is recovering nicely, having rest ed well during the night. Next Tuesday evening the admirers I of St. Patrick will hold their big dance 4 in Douglas. The event is advertised as the Ninth Annual Grand Ball, in honor of Ireland's patron saint, and it is believed that this one will be an "? improvement over the ether eight, at least it is the intention of the com- a mittees to make is so. n The choir of the Congregational church meets tonight. I MARINE NOTES I + The Admiral Evans is scheduled to rrive from the Westward Southbound ext Wednesday. The Spokane, sailing from Seattle tst night should arrive In Juneau next tonday. The Northwestern was In Ketchl an this morning at 9 o'clock and Is xpectcd to arrive in Juneau early to morrow morning. The Admiral Sampson will sail from ieattle Monday night, March 16, in tend of Sunday as per schedule. The Princess Mnquinna, sailing from 'ancouvcr Saturday night should ar ive in Juneau Tuesday night or Wed esday morning. * The Humboldt will be due to arrive rom the South next Wednesday.
