Del-ong will leave on the south salllug of the Humboldt for Seattle, and from there they will return to their former home In Appleton, Wis consin, where Mr. DeLong will engnge In business. i For the past two years Mr. DeLong has had charge of the U. S. cable of fice in this city, conducting the busi ness of the government in a most ef ficient manner and niaklug friends j with the entire citizenship. He will ' be succeeded by Mr. Harry W. Irvine, who will arrive on the Humboldt. ALASKA SPRUCE SUPPLIES DOUGLAS WITH FURNITURE DOUGLAS. March 25?To the ordi nary worker In wood, the Alaska spruce lumber Is a vexatious problem for finishing and furuiture working, but the carpenters and cabinet-mak ers of Douglas Island' have succedcd lu solving the problem. Much of the furniture in the stores, barrooms, and homes of Douglas Is made from Alas ka spruce. With spruce wood, cut at the proper age and season, and prop erly dried, It docs not shrink or warp when made into furniture, and is one of the most beautiful of woods, taking a polish that brings out the grains In attractive shading and tints. The furniture and finishings of tho First Territorial Dank shows an ex ample of what can be done with Alas ka spruce. The desks and tables In that Institution are rich and solid. The arches, pillars and finishings In the Island hotel are being mado of the same wood, and examples of the var ious uses to which Spruce cabinet work are used throughout Douglas shows possibilities for extending the industry over a wide field in furniture | construction. DOUGLAS, March 25.?As fast as the lumber from the new James saw mill can be manufactured, it is being used in construction work. This morn ing an association of Greeks began the erection of a building on St. Ann's avenue, 30 x 30 feet in dimensions. I and two stories in height. The build ing will be used for residence pur poses and will house a number of ten ants. A survey has been made of the old Bear's Nest mill property, and it is reported that a number of cottages will be erected thereon for commer cial purposes. Announcement is made that B. Schramm, has begun the erection of a home and that the lumber is being delivered to him today for that pur pose. A large sign, covering nearly the whole end of tho J. W. Martin store is being painted, showing an Esqui mau in Native costume, advertising a brand of coffee. The work of a lo cal painter shows artistic merit. Bing. Halleck is negotiating for the purchase of the Northern Bar. Mrs. Carroll, who has been visiting in Micigan for several months, will ar rive on the Humboldt, accompanied by her son. F. W. BRADLEY'S BROTHER IS AT TREADWELL TREADWELL. March 25.?P. R. Bradley and son. of Sacramento, are on the Island, where Mr. Bradley is transacting business with the Tread well company. He is a brother of F. \V. Bradley, of the Treadwell and Al aska Juneau company. REPAIRS AT THE "700" STOP SUPPLY OF HEAT TREADWELL, March 25.?Fires in the boilers at the Seven Hundred mine were blown down this morning while the workmen are making repairs; in consequence there is a lack of heat in the club rooms. D. J. Kinzie's home and a number of other places which depend on steam from that source for warmth. It is expected that the repairs will be completed tonight and the steam again turned on. Whipple, superintendent of the Eagle River mines, accompanied by Mrs. Whipple, are returning to Ju neau, aboard the Humboldt. L. E. Buell, Alaska representative of Armour & Company, with headuarters in Juneau, is coming to Juneau on the Humboldt. Mrs. Buell is accompany ing her husband. James McCloskoy is a passenger on the Humboldt, enroute to Junean. Cash Colo is returning to Juneau on the Humboldt. SOCIAL NOTES Mrs. Ralph E. Robertson will enter tain at her home tomorrow afternoon. Mrs. Robert Simpson entertained at her home yesterday afternoon. Mrs. J. R. Willis and Mrs. W. S.
