April 2?A forest fire broke out In the hills immediately back of the city last night and for a time burned with alarming energy, the flames extending over a distance of a quarter of a mile, which shot up into the air. illuminating the country foi miles. Mayor O'Connor had the (tre bell rung, about 2 a. m.. and went with the firemen and a large number of citi zens to assist In stopping the confla gration. Owing to the lack of water but little could be done to prevent the fire from spreading which hud about burned itself out this mornlug. though several men are still on the scene to guard against further damage. Aside from burning the undergrowth and some not overly valuable timber, no damage was done, though for a time the tank of the Murray mill was in danger. Mayor O'Connor wishes to thank the people of Douglas for their ready re sponse to the call of the fire bell and to the firemen of this city and Tread well. who came to the assistance of the community when danger threat ened. Tho men fought flames with wet sacks, pucks of snow and by beat ing oht the sparks and coals with whatever camo handiest. Tho whole country Is as dry as tinder and every precaution should be taken ugnlnst lighting fires at this time. JEFFERSON BRINGS EIGHTEEN PASSENGERS TO DOUGLAS DOUGLAS, April 2.?The Jefferson which arrived In Douglas at four o'clock this morning, left 45 tons of freight here and the following passen gers: Julius Wilson, Tom. Wells, Lu olla Wilson, William Gamble, Gertrude Gamble. Mrs. A. D. Bohrer, Mrs. A. Pavesic, Mrs. E. Buthold, M. Tussila, Mrs. Tussila, Henry Leuta, Miss P. Leuta. Miss Sorella, Miss Lugven, A. P. McQuaid, C. Peterson, and C. Nel son. ENJOYABLE PROGRAM AT LYRIC THEATRE TONIGHT DOUGLAS. April 2.?The following is tho program at the Lyrich theatre tonight: "Finger Prints," an exciting story portraying how the prosecuting attor ney secured his evidence. "Tho Iron Hand" A great two-reel feature. The old popular drama is viv idly portrayed. It is a story of rom ance and intrigue. This feature alone is worth your trouble for coming. April 2.?Mrs. T. Paves ic arrived in Douglas this morning on the Jefferson with her two children, and have Joined Mr. Pavesic. who rec ently opened a tailoring and cleaning shop on SL Ann's Avenue. Oliver Olson received a new Bush and Lane piano this morning which was ordered through Elmer E. Smith. Mrs. Bohrcr arrived this morning and Joined Mr. Bohrer. who is employ ed at the Mexican hoist. They have taken rooms in the second floor of the Jensen block. Jim McDonald left this morning on the Princess May for Prince Rupert, where he will hava charge of a survey gang for the summer. . A baby boy was born this morning to Mr. and Mrs. Geseckus. living near the hospital on St. Ann's avenue. Bartholdi, who has been visiting in the East, returned this morning to Join her husband in Doug las. TREADWELL GETS CALL FOR FIRE FIGHTERS ?+? TREADWELL, April 2.?Word was received by Superintendent Kinzie this morning that the forest fire near the power plant of the Tread well com pany at Sheep Creek was endanger ing their property and that assistance was needed to stay the ravages of the flames. D. J. Kinzie was commis sioned to send a gang of men, headed by Jack Wilson, over on the Amy and they left at an early hour this morn ing. ?+? + + I !
