April 7.?The famous old Bear's Nest, which stood for more than twenty rears, something of an eye-sore and more of a menace in the way of fire danger, and which was pulled down lust year. Is now threaten ed with complete destruction. Mr. Fer ris is today dynamiting the old ma chinery which has stood idly rusting away for a quarter of a century, and having the broken parts carted to the foundry where new castings will be made from the wreck. History savs that the Bear's Nest was built by a German company, who salted the workings and sold the prop erty for a valuable consideration. De velopment by a leasing company showed valuable ore deposits. Now the Treadwell company has a long time lease on the property. Within a month's time not a vestage will re main of the historical structure and soon even its history' will be swept into the wastebasket of time . DOUGLAS HIGH PUTS BASE BALL TEAM IN THE FIELD ?+? DOUGLAS. April 7.?At a meeting of the Douglas high school stuents held last evening it was decided to put a baseball team in the field to compete for first honors with the Ju neau high school team. For the pur pose of completing the organization, the following officers were elected: Stanley Marks, captain; Colville Gal was. manager. The Douglas boys will solicit donations for the purpose of purchasing suits and paraphernalia. COMPLETE CHANGE OF PROGRAM AT THE LYRIC The following is the new program at the Lyric theatre tonight: "Latent Spark." A production by the Flylng-A company. A drama that will please. A comedy. ! One that will amuse you. A FINE NEW FRONT FOR ISLAND HOTEL ! DOUGLAS, April 7.?Workmen are | today taking out the old front of the i Island Hotel and installing a new plate glass front, which, altogether with the other improvements, will make the Island one of the prettiest : places of public entertainment in the i North. i The new front will be set back from I the street and richly finished. The i lobby and billiard room has been sep 1 united from the buffet with a parti i tion of exquisite design, the rooms be | ing connected with two archways sup ! ported by pillars, all made from Alas ka woods under the workmanship of L. G. Thomas. Mr. Baritello is carrying out his ideas at considerable expense in re modeling the hotel, but when finished he will have the satisfaction of know ing he has one of the handsomest plac es in the North. FERRIS STARTS BUILDING FOUR NEW BUNGALOWS DOUGLAS. April 7.?E. J. Dailey, building contractor, yesterday began the construction of four modern four-room bungalows on the site of the old Bear's Nest for D. H. Ferris. These buildings are to be 24 x 34 feet, ground measure and will be lathed and plas tered and fitted with baths and toil ets. They will be constructed for ren tal purposes and in case tenants are readily secured. It is Mr. Ferris' in tention to add two or three more cot tages on the rear of the lot. Mr. Bai ley says the cottages will be ready for occupancy within sixty days. DOUGLAS WOMAN SHOOTS AT HUBBY DOUGLAS, April 7.?Mamie Harper is in trouble again. This troublo dif fers from her former troublos only in seriousness, her former griefs result ing from the samo cause?fondness for drink and narcotics. This morn ning at ubout three o'clock she cut loose with a revolver and took a shot at her husband, he being the favorite target upon whom she practices when ever John Barleycoru urges her to do deeds of violence. Mainie has thrown flatlrons und rolling pins at him in the past, but her marksmanship has been bad. and so it proved when she shot at Ollle, for that is the given name of her husband. She shot at him, but the bullet went wild, almost as wild as Mamie. This afternoon Deputy Marshal Pels arrested her and took her to Juneau on the 2:15 ferry for the purpose of turn ing her over to the U. S. marshal to deal with. Mamie Harper is a colored woman and a few weeks ago was fined in the municipal court for assault on Ollle Harper, her husband. Galvanizing done by G. Koene, Sans Souci Bldg.. DOUGLAS ELECTION A VERY TAME AFFAIR DOUGLAS, April 7.?Up to the noon hour today, the voting in Douglas had not taken much of a thrill, as far as electioneering goes, but fifty-four votes being cast out of a possible 292, which was the number of registra tions. It Is believed that more thnn two hundred voters will exercise their franchise, which will be something more than cast lust year. No issues of importance are being fought out, the choice simply being a matter of personal preference, as all the candi dates are well known and esteemed citizens. + OLD OFFENDER DRAWS FIVE DAYS IN JAIL DOUGLAS, April 7.?M. Morano, a Mexican with a record for getting in to trouble with the police, having re cently arrived from Juneau where he served a sentence, was taken in by Marshal Shafer yesterday under the charge of drunkenness. Judge Henson gave him five days in jail. A large raft of logs arrived yester day for the James sawmill. ? * TREADWELL NOTES + ? * The Treadwell club librarian has just completed renumbering and cat aloging the books in the library. Vis itors to the library may now have ac cess to a completely catalogue show ing every book contained there and its location on the shelves. + ?* MARINE NOTES ? ? The Mariposa is due to arrive from the Westward Thursday. The Thomas L. Wnad sails from Seattle Wednesday. The Qulnault sailed for Alaska from Portland last Wednesday. The Bertha sailed from Seattle Sat urday at 2:30 p. m.( with explosives and freight for Southeastern Alaska. The Humboldt, arriving at the Is land this afternoon will be In Juneau i early this evening. The Admiral Sampson, sailing from Seattle Sunday night should arrive in : Juneau tomorrow night. The Spokane, sailing from Seattle i last night, should arrive in Juneau * Friday. The Alameda should arrive from 1 the South Thursday night or Friday I morning.
