ALASKA DAILY EMPIRE Telephone No. 3-7-4 JOHN W. TROY', Editor and Manager. Published by the EMPIRE PRINTING COMPANY Entered as second-class matter November 7, 1912 at the postotllce at Ju neau. Alaska, under the Act of March 3. 1879. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: 07e year, by mail 810.00 Six months, by mall 6.00 Per month, delivered 1.00 MAYOR JOHN RECK. THE City Council could not have pleased the people more had it tried never so hard than it did when it selected John Reck to be Mayor. It did what the people would have done for themselves had they' been given the opportunity. There is uo man in this city who possesses, more general information about Ju neau or who knows its people better than John Iteck. nor is there one who is sounder on business matters, morel public spirited or unselfishly interest ed in the city's welfare. It requires no prophet to predict that he will make a ue.xcelieut Mayor; it requires j only familiarity with his record in Ju neau. The great glee that is exhibited by! the newspapers and in the political speeches of those opposing the Demo cratic administration, because of the division of sentiment with reference | to the canal -tolls question, tells its ow n story. They are not particularly interested in free tolls, but immensely so in a chance to divide the party' that is giving the country the best administration it has had in a gener ation. They want the offices. WHOSE ERROR? SPEAKING of the complete change that the last two weeks have, brought about in the attitude of the British people towarcUthe two po-j litical parties of England, the London Times says: "This amazing government has profited by its error." The "error" was, of course, the determination to; pass and enforce the home rule bill J for Ireland, pursuant to the declared i policy of the Liberal party prior to j its victory at the polls. It may be that the Times is right. It is pub lished n London aud its editors con sider British politics with all the ad \antage of first hand information and long familiarity. However, on this side of the Atlantic opinion is more likely to b> that Asquith and his party and home rule have profltted by thej "ama. ing" spectacle of the preaching by the Unionists of armed rebellion against the government, aud by Union ist encouragement of sedition in the! army. Over here it looks mightily as though > the "error" was committed by the op position and not the government, and that the profit has gone where it of right belongs. It is a very complimentary commen tary upon the personnel of the new City Council of Juucuu that It has so many members who possess all the qualifications necessary to make a kooiI Mayor. KEEN COMPETITION. THE competition among the mem bers of President Wilson's Cab inet for first place in the affec tions of Alaska is becoming keen. If Congress only does as Cabinet mem bers have asked it to do, when the Alaskan of the future looks at the Ter ritorial capitol building he will think of McAdoo; wheu he considers the liberal land laws, the administration of Federal governmental functions and the developing railroad it will be the kindly and handsome face of Lane that will present itself before his mental vision, and all those who travel up and down the coast will bless the memory of Kedfleld for providing safety to nav igation. Whenever a political party is driven to "twisting the lion's tail" for a po litical issue it is a sign that it Is hard pressed on domestic questions, which, after all, concern people most. PECULIAR APPRECIATION. SEATTLE newspapers are exhibit ing a peculiar brand of appre ciation for the work the admin istration is doing for the development of the West?for the opeuing of Alas ka to development and the restoration of American principles of government to the administration of the public do main. They are giving columns of space to Representative Humphrey's campaign literature abusing the Pres ident and Cabinet and the majority party in Congress. Probably they would like a return of the chaotic land conditions and another long period of neglect for Alaska such as obtained when the Republicans were in power at Washington and Humphrey's cur ious sort of politics was in flower in Seattle. The affirmative vote for the free tolls repeal bill in the House was made up as follows: Democrats, 222; Re publicans. 24; Progressives. 2. The opposition was: Republicans. 92; Dem ocrats. 52; Progressives, 18. Coffee, better than your mother ever made, at the Sampede Restaurant.? ?2-19-tf. Bargains on typewriters. See W. H.
