Sully has about completed the al terations ami repairs on the gasboat Lulu, which has been repainted and overhauled in readiness for the sum mer's cruising. The Lulu won first prize in the Fourth of July races held in Juneau two years ago, and is still considered a speedy craft. ALICE BRINGS ANOTHER RAFT OF 275,000 FEET DOUGLAS. April 14. ? The James sawmill tug Alice, with Captain York in command, arrived late last night from Portage bay with the second raft of logs. Captain Y'or says this raft I consists of some of tho clearest anc I prettiest saw timber that ho hai hauled for a long time. His next trl] will be to Seymour narrows where Mr James has a large ninouut of logi i ready to be towed to this port. TONIGHT'S PROGRAM AT THE LYRIC THEATRE ?+? DOUGLAS. April 14. ? "A Hired Dress Suit." a comedy li which there are many trying am j laughable situations. MAYOR O'CONNOR AUTHORIZES . NEW STREET IMPROVEMENT? DOUGLAS. April 14.?Mayor M. J 1 O'Connor issued tho statement today *! that work would begin next week on ) the extension of the planking on many . of the streets, together with tho ex i tension of the salt wator mains. Third street is to be planked from tho O'Connor corner to the postoftlco with the same kind of substantial . planking that constitutes part of the present thoroughfare. On Second street, new planking will " be placed from the baseball grounds ' to tho bridge. Front street Is to be replanked from the Smith corner to " F. street, the latter work to be done later In the season after the two othor 1 streets nro completed. Another needed Improvement, which is to be started immediately, Is tho ex tension of the salt water mains from 1 the O'Conner corner to the Third street bridge, which will supply Are J fighting water to all the district on the west side of the bridge, a part of the city which Is badly in need of protection. Other Improvements will be made as the needs are most urgent. COUNCIL PAYS $5,400 AND HAS MONEY LEFT ?*? DOUGLAS. April 14?The new city council went into office last night af ter the expiration of the incumbency of the previous council: Bills to the amount were audited and ordered paid, which practically wiped out all claims against the city. A nice balance was left in the treasury. ?+? LAND OF MIDNIGHT SUN PICTURES NEXT WEEK DOUGLAS, April 14.?Manager Arm strong of the Lyric theatre has just booked an attraction for the evenings of the 21st and 22nd which will bo of t special interest to people of the North I ?the J. Jansen-Fuhr Scandinavian Travel Festival from Christiania, Nor way. There will be eleven thousand feet of films, showing scenes of inter est in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The scenery of Scandinavia resembles Alaska and these pictures will show an almost endless variety of landscapes and waterways, together with such places as Stavanger, Odda. Hardang er. April 14.?The Douglas Civic Improvement Club will meet with Mrs. Tascher at her home tomorrow evening at eight o'clock. All those interested in making Douglas a better | and more beautiful place in which to live, are earnestly desired to be pres ent. ; The Northern is continuing Its scheme of improvement by opening , the building to the rear and arranging an arcade entrance to the theatre from the ferry dock. The hustling manager of the Lyric, who is one of the pro-1 prietors of the Northern, has secured ! the services of Mr. Frodsham. a ca-1 pable trap drummer for the orchestras; of the two places which adds much to i the entertainment features. The gen tleman recently arrived from the States where he worked for the Sulli | van-Considine circuit. Mr. Liebricht this morning began the erection of a cottage on his lots back of the bear's nest. A new corrugated iron roof is be ing laid on the Episcopal church build ing. A BASEBALL GROUNDS SHOW STEADY IMPROVEMENT TREADWELL, April 14.?The pipe lines which conveyed mill tailings to the ball grounds has been removed and the field now presents a perfect ly level plane upon which the dia mond has been laid out. The clay and fertilizer infield is being packed as hard as a floor, upon which the boys are already playing practice stunts. When everything Is in readiness the Treadwell grounds will be one of the snappiest in the North and will be used for part of the games to be played on the Island this summer. It is expected that a least half of the season's games will be played on the new grounds, though the grounds at Douglas are to be used without dis crimination. The Douglas field is a good one and the grandstand has been inclosed, making it more comfort able for spectators. In the meantime the public is waiting for the magic words, "play ball."
