FINDS ANCIENT PURSE SECRETED LONG AGO DOUGLAS, April 17.?While remov Ing an old stump from his lot for the purpose of making gardeu. J. H. Kel ly found concealed In Its rots an old time leather purse, rolled up and "all bound "round with a woolen striug." Mr. Kelly had a sensation of falling heir to sotnethlug, but when be uu wound it there was but little left to re ward him. In side, but rotted with ago, was what had evidently been some sort of legal document and a clipping from u German newspaper. Part of the seal was decipherable, as was some of the context of the printing. A date of 1700 appeared and the newspaper ar ticle evidently was an account of a robbery. There is no way of estimat ing how long the wallet had remained In the stump, but at least thirty or more years must have elapsed to bring it to its present state of decay, the place of coucealment being more than a foot below the ground level. The Kelly home is situated on the old Kane comer at Secoud and D streets. TRIP TO SCANDINAVIA AT LYRIC THEATRE ? ? The J. Jansen-Fuhr Scandinavian Travel Festival, with cloven thousand feet of moving picture films, at the Ly ric theatre on the evenings of Tues day and Wednesday, April 21 and 22. A trip to the old home for the Scandi navians. Admission 25 and 50 cents. On Tuesday night 5,000 feet of film will be shown and a trip will be taken through Norway. In this trip all the national sports, industries and habits of the Norwegian peoplo will be shown with a glimpse of the midnight sun and the world's famous fjords. Pictures ol all tho quaint townB and villages will be shown on the screen and the show will be a veritable trip back home to many people. On Wednesday night tho pictures will be 6,000 feet of film of Sweden and Denmark. 4-16-3t. + H DOUGLAS NEWS NOTES 4 DOUGLAS. April 17.?The steamei City of Seattle is marked to arrive on the Island at nine o'clock tonight, sailing from Juneau at eleven. Among the passengers for the South will be It. It. Hubbard who will make a bus iness trip to Seattle of a week or ten days' duration. Who will be Queen of the May? The Draper club contest committee has left a ballot box at Hubbard's store In Douglas and invited tho citizens of Douglas to vote for their choice for the honored position of May Queen. The contest is for the purpose of rais ing funds for a public library in Ju neau, that city having no library of a public character. Douglas is enti tled to a candidate or as many as de sire to enter the race. Mrs. Joe Riedi and children, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Robertson and children and Alex Robertson will leave tonight or In the morning at the sailing of the Sampson, for Europe. Mrs. Ricdl and children will go to Alsace-Lorraine for a visit at her former home, while the members of the Robertson family will visit their former homes in Scot land. During the absence of Mr. Rob ertson the draying business will be in charge of Pat McGuire. ?+ WORK STARTED ON NEW TREADWELL TENNIS COURT TREADWELL, April 17.?Spur car tracks are being laid from the main line to the grounds back of the club where a new tennis court is to be built l at once. The court has been laid out parallel with the club building, and is | to be fitted with crushed rock, the rock to be hauled in cars from the mine over the spur. The tennis court ad joins the new ball grounds on the southeast corner and will add another enjoyable feature to the general scheme of outdoor amusement for the citizens of Douglas Island. +? ? 4' TREADWELL NOTES 4 ? ?+ TREADWELL. April 17?Frank Rus sell left this morning for his outing at Tenakee Springs. There is a regular bargain counter [rush for.tickets to the baseball dance to be given Wednesday evening. That dance will inaugurate tho baseball sea son of 1911 on Douglas Island. Frank Murphy had his face scorched quite severely yesterday when a quan tity of carbide exploded, which had been placed in a position where some water had dropped upon it. He is out today minus his eyebrows and winkers but otherwise not seriously injured. Mr. Murphy is a member of the safety committee and may have to report his own oversight. There was an enjoyable band prac tice last night. Tho next band con cert will probably be given a week from Saturday. It is claimed that Treadwell has the best band in Alaska.
