ALASKA DAiLY EMPIRE Telephone No. 3-7-4 JOHN W. TROY, Editor and Manager. Published by the EMPIRE PRINTING COMPANY Entered u second-class matter November 7. 1912 at the poatotHce at Ju neau. Alaska, under the Act of March 3. 1879. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: Q?o year, by mall $10.00 Six months, by mall 5.00 Per month, delivered 1.00 POLICING SHOULD BE LOCAL MATTER. HETHER one believes In Sun Wday closing or not all must admit that village and townj policing in Alaska is small business for the government of the Nation to i be engaged in. That is a question that should be worked out here as else-' where by the people acting through the authority of their own Legislature. Yet. there is none who can complain because officers sworn to execute the Federal laws are doing so. It is the system that is wrong. The people of Alaska should have self-government. The policy of Sunday closing is uot involved in this principle. It was as true last year, when saloons were kept open in spite of what people thought about It. as it Is now that they are closed without the people's being consulted. Senator Jones, of Washington, speak ing at New York Saturday, invited the Progressives back nito the Republi can party. The same day. Senator: Jones' colleague. Senator Poindexter. speaking at Indianapolis, boosted the boom for another Progressive Presi dential nomination for The Colonel. The harmonious union of the opposl- , tion is. apparently, afar off. Senators Henry Cabot Lodge and Elihu, ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM HAINES MISSION * HAINES. April 17.?The case of C. \V. Hockett against Bernard McNa mee. accused as an absconding debtor, j came to an end yesterday in U. S.' Commissioner R. M. Odell's court, and resulted in a non-suit. The Glacier creek people have ar rived and are on their way to Glacier creek to begin their summer's work. Mr. Knight will have charge again this summer, and Mr. Ford will run their freight automobile again this summer. There will be a special election next Monday. April 20, for the pur pose of choosing two councilmen from the three tied at the general election. The contest will be between Timothy Creedon. B. E. Benson and James McQuinn. Judge R. M. Odell is having an artis tic fence placed around his lot near the Arctic Brotherhood's hall. The snow has all disappeared from the town and it is taking on the appear ance of spring. ONE RAILROAD HAS NO COMPLAINT * WASHINGTON. April 21?President Stevens of the Chesapeake & Ohio says traffic on that road is equal to last year. He is the first Eastern rail- ] road man who has not complained to the Interstate Commerce Commission of decreasing business. ARGENTINE CORN TO INVADE NEW ENGLAND BOSTON. April 21.?At a result of concessions made by the New Haven Railroad the New England States will be opened up as the market for Ar Root head the list of 12 Republican Senators who are with the President for the free tolls repeal bill. Sena tor Smoot leads the majority end of the minority. HARD WEEK ON CHAMPIONS. HE first week of the baseball sea Tson was a hard one on the pen nant winners. The Athletics, champions of the world, won their first game of the season yesterday at Boston. The Giants, last year's cham pions of the National League, have not yet won a game, and Vancouver and Portland, leaders of the Northwest and Pacific Coast Leagues, respectively, have had a hard time keeping out of the cellar. While it is a long time be tween this and the close of the sea son. every game won or lost in April and May will cout in the final per centage tables just as much as one of those nerve testing struggles that mark the Indian summer days of late September. Those Republicans and Progressives who are trying so hard to make po litical capital out of the foreign policy of the administration are very likely to run up against a reaction before the end of the long Congressional campaign that will be more disastrous to.their political aspirations than was the flood tide of 1912 and 1913. 41 1 f~?fM? 1 Tk? geuuue corn ut-'Kiuiiius i, uu abolition of lighterage charges and workable rates from piers to all New England points are primary changes made.
