ALASKA DAILY EMPIRE] Telephone No. 3-7-4 JOHN W. TROY, Editor and Manager. Published by the EMPIRE PRINTING COMPANY Kntered as second-class matter November 7, 1912 at the postofflce at Ju neau. Alaska, under the Act of March 3. 1S79. < SUBSCRIPTION RATES: < Q?e rear, by mall $10.00 < Six months, by mall 6.00 < Per month, delivered 1.00 < JUNEAU'S INTEREST IN BASEBALL THE enthusiasm and liberality with which the people of Juncuu have goue about to prepare for au in teresting baseball seasou is praise worthy. There is no more wholesome sport than baseball provides. It af fords recreation and diversion as well as entertainment. It gives a commun ity something to think about and talk about besides the the huudrum of bus iness mutters. When grown, conservative business | men in a city of the dimensions of Ju neau contribute $4,000 or $5,000 for a baseball park, without hope or direct returns, aud then contribute actual ser vices while the matrons and young la dies serve meals to those who labor,' there is nothing to fear of the health. of the public spirit, or the attitude of the citizens toward life in general. Juneau is all right. It is simply a normal, wide-awake little American city that is rapidly becoming a big city. No newspaper can pay any atten-i tion to anonymous letters. The Em-j pire must have the names of its cor respondents. not necessarily for pub lication. but as evidence of the good faith of the writers before it can give publicity to their views. The writer' who signed a communication "Labor er" should give us his name or call at the otRce. He has written on a sub ject that shall receive attention. WAR SITUATION. IT IS altogether likely that Villa isi in earnest when he says that no one can draw him into a war with the United States. It is not necessary to believe that he has any particular love for this country, or ethical con ception of the situation to accept this belief. It is only necessary to reason j from what we know. Villa has shown that he is the most capable lighting man that has been developed in Mex ico in a Ion': time. He has acted like a man who knows what his men can do. and he has made them do it. His performances indicate that he has suf ficient intelligence to know what would result to his army should he! take it against the American army. Telkomp, N. A. LeGault, Seattle; Charles Hil ton, A. E. Miller, Tacoma; W. I. Mc ! it Is true that he not his military ex [ perlence In the American army anil j then deserted from it. it is certain [ that he knows enough about Amerl i cans to understand that war with the United States would abruptly termin ate a war record that has been excep tionally brilliant. The chances are that Carranza has been attempting to boost the import ance of his position as the head of the Constitutionalist government with proclamation and official correspond ence, and that his warfare will not call into action any equipment more formidable than typewriters, unless his hand should be forced by the an ti-American sentiment of his follow ers. With Huerta. also, the fighting forces are likely to be stenographers' rather than infantrymen for some time. Unless local sentiment forces him to declare war, or unless he commits some act more in keeping with the methods of of assassin than those of a President and a soldier that will make the invasion of Mexico neces sary. the Mexican situation is likely to drfag. In al probability there will be very little real flghtins unless the United States goes after it and hunts the enemy in his holes. In the meantime the government at Washington is not losing its head. It is joining no stampede, but is going ahead in a manner commensurate with the dignity of a great Nation to show ? blustering military dictators that they ! cannot play horse with the United [ States with impunity. On the other ? hand, it is doing what can be done to . impress such intelligence as obtains I south of the Rio Grande that it is * not its purpose to engage the theoret- - icallv sovereign people of Mexico in [ a general war. ] The Draper Club Is performing a' j service of inestimable Value to the !j people of Juneau in getting behind the ^ movement for a public library and free reading room, and it should have the unqualified support of all the peo ple of this city. Juneau people are to give a demon stration of their attachment to the great National sport tomorrow. They will literally work for it. I-eod, Seward; A. E.
