Sleeping on the streets in a lively city like Doug las. is uot only forbidden by the ordi nance. but l? a direct insult to our spir it of progresslveness. so when Mayor O'Connor found a man in that condi tion yesterday noon, he felt that a cog had slipped in the eternal fitness of things and proceeded to awaken the slumberer and escort him to a place where he might "sleep, perchance to dream." After his siesta. Charles, (his name being Charles Ervickl awoke and was taken before the police magistrate who thought the peace and dignity of the fair city of Douglas had been affront ed to the extent of five dollars. When paying the fine. Mr. Ervick said that he had taken a few too many, but It was the last two drinks that gripped him in the clutches of Morpheus and choked his remembrance of mundane things. All the aqu atic stunts will be enacted by the swimmers who have been training un der Director McDonald for the past few weeks. Several ladies from Juneau were over yesterday to enjoy the swimming In the Treadwell club tank, it being ladies' day. This popular swimming pool is uttractiug the ladles from across the channel in increasing num bers each week. At the big club show this evening, the Treadwell band will give their second concert under the present or ganization. It will be worth hearing. Workmen began pouring tho floor for the new oflicc building yesterday afternoon. Remarkable time is being made ou the construction of tho new building and the demolition o ftho old one. A. Wnsdahl. familiarly known as the "240 Swede," is an incoming passen ger on the A1KI, after having spent some time visiting hiH former friends in the Dakotas. The firemen's meeting Inst night was well attended and the usual amount of entertainment was afforded. Tho old residence building across from the meat market which for some time has remained unoccupied, is being torn down. With the windows I broken out and the doors falling into drunken lopsidedness, it was not a sightly object, so the company ordered it to the scrap heap and the place will be made attractive. CONCRETE CHIMNEY BLOCKS. Julius Johnson, of Douglas, has a stock of concrete chimney blocks, the same as have been put out for four seasons, at 50 cents a block. 4-24-2t.
