ALASKA DAILY EMPIRE Telephone No. 3-7-1 JOHN W. TROY, Editor and Manager. Published by the EMPIRE PRINTING COMPANY Entered as second-class matter November 7, 1912 at the postofllce at Ju neau. Alaska, under the Act of March 3. 1879. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: (toe year. by mall $10.00 Six months, by mall 6.00 Per month, delivered 1.00 NO OCCASION FOR EXCITEMENT. THE people should have a care not to become excited over sensa tional stories concerning af fairs In Mexico. Sensational stories will be printed. They will be sent by I hair-trigger correspondents from all J sections of the world. They will be I specially prolific in those Sunday j newspapers that uce the Hearst ser-1 vice, because Hearst has declared war on the President, and any thing that his newspapers can do to injure Wil son and Bryan will be done. However, the fact Is the President | and his Cabinet have the situationj well in hand. They have the unquali-1 fled backing of both the Senate and the \ House of Representatives, in spite of I the few there who make speeches to| create copy for the papers that are, fighting the administration, and in spite of those who naturally are car ried along by the war spirit that al ways springs into view upon the slight-; est pretext in this and all other coun tries. They possess the good will and the confident admiration of the Na tions of the world. And. above all. behind them stand squarely and firm ly a tremendous majority of the one hundred million Americans who con stitute the Republic of the United States. These have an abiding faith in the patriotism, good faith and in tegrity of purpose of their President and his advisers and their capacity to j meet any situation that might arise. | People can well afford, therefore, to j take it for granted that the Interests! of the United States are going to be j cared for in a big and broad way such I as will redound to the credit and glory 1, of their country. They can well af-: ford doubly to discount both hair-trig ger stories and mendacious attacks. , I With war in Colorado and active preparations for war continuing in Ul- 1 ster the boasted Anglo-Saxon civili- 1 zation has not so much on the Latins as some would like it to have. i ? "JUDGE BURKE'S BLUNT LOGIC." IF ANYTHING further were required to show that the opponents of the free tolls repeal bill are working to create opposition to the administra tion rather than to secure free tolls it was provided by Judge Thomas 1 Burke's speech before the Senate in teroceanic canal committee, and the ' Seattle Times' approval of his "blunt ' logic." Here ,"s what the Seattle Times calls f "Judge Burke's Blunt Logic:' ' "Shall we keep faith with the peo- ! pie of the United States, the bearers of the burden required to construct j and safeguard the canal? Shall we s keep the pledge to them that, by means . of this great waterway, they should have genuine competition in the trans- g portation of the products of their toil f and industry on farm and in factory from ocean to ocean? "To lure a people on to assume a , burden of $400,000,000 on the promise v that it would bring relief to them in (1 marketing the products of their skill t; and labor and then, after the work j, was completed and their sacrifices had j been made, to put it out of their pow er to reap the advantages promised t] would be the most shameful and stu-l.f, pemlous confidence game ever played ({ upon the people of this or any other country." f( Certainly, one possessing Judge Burke's attainments would never ex- n pect informed Senators to take him b seriously. It required three questions by Sen ator Simmons and answers by Henry fi White, who opened the negotiations n for the Hay-Pauncefote treaty and was a connected with the American foreign | office all through the Panama canal ne gotiations, and who qualified as be- t< ing fully acquainted with the whole a I I CLASSIFIED ADV. i " * ; G FOUND?Forresters of America pin. "In 1S9S." "When was the canal work start ed r "In 1904." "When was the free tolls question first seriously considered?" "During the Congressional Session that began in December, 1911." So far as the promise that cheaper freight rates would result from the can al is concerned, the record shows that $130,000,000 worth of freight was shipped by water to the Atlantic side of the isthmus last year, transferred to the Pacific by rail and rcshipped in oc^an vessels, because it could be handled in that manner at less cost than It could be handled by the rail roads. Surely it will not be urged In seriousness that transportation cost will not be further reduced?notwith standing a few cents a ton toll?when one freight charge shall supercede three and two handlings of cargo be ob viated by the passage of vessels through the canal. Judge Burke's speech was evident ly delivered for publication in the Se attle Times and for its editorial treat ment for the benefit of Will Humph rey's constituents. When employers begin hiring a pri vate army and strikers begin buying rifles it is a sure sign that the State is not doing its full duty. LONDON" PAPERS SUPPORT WIL SON. THE newspapers of London are practically unanimous in their support of President Wilson and the United States in the present Mex ican embroilment. The London Standard says the Pres ident's action "provides hope of even tual peace and resumption of trade." Further, "the Standard learns the ac tion of the United States has the full acquiescence of the British govern ment and that any international com plications are extremely unlikely." The Times says: "The crisis has come in a form which, as sincere friends of the American people, we could well have wished different. Their justification for forcible interference In Mexican affairs is far stronger than the particular pretext upon which the President decided to abandon his pol cy of watchful waiting. It is ques :ionable, however, how far the aspir itions the President voices in his mes sage can be realized." The Daily Mail says: "There can be 10 mistaking the British attitude. It s only one of admiration for the toler mce and self-control with which Presi lent Wilson has employed all the re iources of diplomacy to avert the cris s of intervention, and they may be sure if the good will of the whole English peaking world in facing an unsought or task." The Daily News says: "It Is only air to President Wilson to recognize hat he restored to direct action only rhen the maladroit impudence of the * ictator left him no alternative. But he fact that it has unwillingly been laced in his hands does not lessen the anger of the new question." The Daily Telegraph contends that he logical consequence of a success ul war against Mexico, the assump ion of the burden of government by he United States, would benefit all jreign interests in Mexico. The Daily Graphic says: "The war is ot an accident but a thing predistined y irresistible causes." Secretary of the interior Lane re uses to permit the Mexican excite lent to cause him to forget Alaska; nd he won't let the others forget it.
